What sorcery is thiss??

Kinda an exploit of current mechanics. Duplicants are able to access a tile across 1 diagonal. If there is a storage, they can access it. And tiles enclosed in such way don't leak gas/temperature. So a vacuum can be made there to store things in.

It's arguable if this ever be changed or not.  What is definitely an exploit is that the refrigerator can currently work without powering it.

Nothing stops you from using the regular food storage using this method. Fridge in this example is not used for cooling just storing. The vacuum provides both sterile and cold atmosphere.

It's for cooling too i guess but idk if its useful to cool down steam/hot water pipes, never tried it yet.

I think the vacuum method is far easier and less time consuming. gonna try that one!(before they fix it :p)

But a vacuum isn't cold it just stops heat from transferring.

Yeah vacuum not cold but I think game just apply "refrigerated" status to food in sterile  environment even if it co2 100C+ degrees, not sure needs teting :)

It does not apply the status per se, but for some reason (well, some, oversight in code) the sterile atmosphere applies full stop to rotting.
