Is Electrolyzer better than Algae?

Recommended Posts

I'm currently running a world that used to heavily rely on algae. It's terrible, runs out quickly, and the slime to algae conversion is around 1kg per convert. It's pretty trashy if you ask me -fairly early to mid game stuff. Later on in the game, it feels like I personally relied more on manual generators and hydrogen generators (hydrogen produced by my electrolyzers). The conversion of the electrolyzer for water to oxygen/hydrogen is pretty great amazing and I've since converted to using only 2 electrolyzers to fill my base full of oxygen.

My base is pretty much just a result of winging everything and fixing any problems that arose; It's really far from optimal.

not that easy, you have to anticipate and create a space above where the hydrogen will go, if you don't plan things, you will destroy your colony

My colony shown above was pretty much drowning in hydrogen. I pretty much panicked since, knowing chemistry and knowing that hydrogen was an extremely strong oxydizer, my dupes would insta-die. But, nope. Hydrogen just diffuses upwards above all other gases and is labeled as unbreathable. You should be able to get the hydrogen generator relatively soon after you get the electrolyzer. So, it's not too much of a problem, just gotta build your gas pump high up into a crevice where your hydrogen would accumulate.

Or just dig upwards into a cave, letting the hydrogen displace whatever gas was already there (such as the highly useful contaminated oxygen).

Yeah... somehow our dupe are incredebly stubid (enclosing sometimes their own head in walls...) but incredebly tough...

When I tried the same thing, my gas pump couldn't keep up with the volume of hydrogen produced by the electrolyzer.  It continuously shut off and on even though it was in 100% hydrogen at the top of my like yours.  Meanwhile, my base was gradually suffocating from the creeping wall of hydrogen pushing out all the oxygen.  I even built 3 more gas pumps, but still no luck.  I assume this is a bug, but I'm curious how you managed to get your pump working properly.

Not really a bug, just that the pump doesn't pump if the gas is under 150-something grams. Because hydrogen expands quite well, it tool over all the space it could. What you should have done is produce a bunch of gas to compress the hydrogen in a small space so it could be pumped.

Best method yet is to build 1-2 electroliser and a pump in a small room, and then sort out the oxygen and hydrogen produced.

I tried the same thing, living off of converting slimes. It was horrible. All the duplicates did all day was grab sand and slime and put it in the slime machine and filter, and make food. I couldn't get anything done, but strangely enough it worked. I went AFK for a while and nobody died. All I had to do was come back every now and then to tell them to dig slime and sand, and repair buildings that dupes lashing out broke. There was only one little space where the dupes could breath, which was the algae-oxygen-machine-thing they were constantly refilling. The renewable water and recycling the water from the lavatory and shower helped a ton, so I lose extremely little water. cycle 50 and counting.
