Mencken
I try not to rush through Don't Starve so I can enjoy the whole immersive experience at a pace that more realistically emulates real life. Probably the best way to play is never reading guides or the Wiki but since death is irreversible the costs are too high. I'm over 500 days now with a fairly primitive camp but it provides for everything I need and then some in terms of food/defense. In Don't Starve you have to be pretty conservative (unless you have amazing dodging skills from the start), who wants to lose hundreds of hours of effort with a single stupid mistake? Had a few questions, what are the best production methods for logs and grass? One more, since stone is irreplaceable what is a good substitute? There have to be good substitutes for safe rooms as well or maybe the concept of a safe room is an antiquated one? Evolution of log harvesting: Primitive - Chopping down trees and collecting without space bar Early - Using space bar and planting trees near base Middle - Hiring teams of pigs to dismantle forests (and they dispatch the tree monsters very quickly) Advanced? I'm at the point now that in two days I can produce 150-200 logs but maybe there is a faster way. Keep in mind this is for the default character. Grass is so essential, I go through 300-400 units in a season, it takes me 3 days to accumulate this much. Between the grass and logs I spend 5 days in the summer just getting together supplies. Such a rat race. Link to comment https://forums.kleientertainment.com/forums/topic/73046-most-efficient-production-methods-for-default-character/ Share on other sites
Mobbstar
In RoG, you can use the giant giant to quickly harvest large amounts of wood. As for grass, there is no faster way than to dig it up and replant it near your base, then harvest it and occasionally fertilise. As for stone, you can always get more using RoG moleworms (digging their burrows drops additional minerals) or by igniting some of the explosive slime from the caves while underground (the tremor will cause rocks to rain from the heavens, just like slightly more lethal money). To aid you in combat, I advice using items that let you be faster. It is much easier to dodge with higher speed. Maslak
48 minutes ago, Mobbstar said: As for grass, there is no faster way than to dig it up and replant it near your base, then harvest it and occasionally fertilise. On deserts (RoG exclusive) you can find tumbleweeds. They drop 3 items on harvest, mostly grass/twigs. They have invisible spawners, which you can locate using this trick: Prebuild a structure - the more space it needs the better - and then run with it 'on cursor' through the desert. When it becomes unplaceable without reason then you found tumbleweed spawner. You can wall it (they won't pass 1 tile gap iirc, so you can save up on stone). One of those will spawn up to 4-5 weeds for you to harvest every day as far as I know. Find all spawners, wall them and here goes your grass/twigs. It is time consuming (mostly setting up) but it can be useful if your main base is on the desert. This biome has more cool stuff - cacti for sanity/veggie filler, buzzards (meat) and ponds + cats or hounds, depending on desert type. Ispin69
Easiest way to get logs is planting 100 or so as close as possible, wait a few days (not winter though?) then use the old bell twice to remove the stumps rather than spend time shoveling them up. I know some people use the wormhole trick but I find that's unnecessary. Plant 4-5 fields of trees. Obviously, you can always run bearger thru these tree farms for easy logs as well. But the hard part is collecting and replanting the pinecones. I try not to use wood for fires even though one board is enough to keep a fire for a whole night+dusk usually. If I have boxes and boxes of twigs/grass, I will burn twigs and rot. If I have tons of beefalo poop, I'll burn that too. As for grass I usually plant a farm of 40-50 and I always pick them as fast as they come up along with the twigs. If you require more, plant 60-100. I agree with maslak, tumbleweed is another way to get more grass/twigs. I'll set boxes right next to my twig/grass farm and try to fill the entire box and add more boxes as needed knowing I will need tons of grass/twigs down the road. Making a toothtrap field takes tons of wood and rope. I do them in stages, maybe 25-50 at a time even if I have the tooth, wood, rope. I prefer an open toothtrap field over a safe room with walls. Just make sure to put wood flooring (or marble/carpet/desert) to prevent a lureplant from spawning and digesting all of the toothtraps. SimonL
Something not mentioned in here was eyeplant gardeners to automatically harvest grass and twigs. Just plant an eyeplant far away from base, and at least every 2 days (when eyeplants regrow) or whenever grass/twigs regrow, come back, kill the eyeplant and replant it. Then you can pick up full 60/60 stacks of grass and twigs. There's a good youtube video out there on it but i actually dislike the design that he came up with, it comes out with too little yield. I've experimented with a sort of star formation and recently gone into making lanes of grasstufts + saplings. So far I haven't seen many people do this, so you can come up with something fun and original.
