seperate servers really necessary?

Recommended Posts

Hello guys, i wanted to set up a server with caves and it is really frustrating and problems come and i dont know what to do.

Is it not possible to make caves in one world with the overworld and just connect the sinkholes like wormholes into the game? This would benefit everyone and would make everything much easier. Or they could release a tool which sets up everything autmoatically and you can just enjoy playing.

What do you think about this? is it ok for you to set everything up and search for answers on the internet and forums if something doesnt work? I mean games should be enjoyable and not work.

I think the problem with hosting caves on the overworld is changes in temperature, lighting, things like hound/worm attacks, etc...

If you want, there's a mod that generates the caves on the overworld of you wanna try it.

No, it is not possible.

Doing all that stuff needs a big worldgen rework, and a massive rework on how different entities/components react to the same clock.

Not going to happen at this point.

If you just enjoy having caves biomes with full daylight, there are mods that put cave biomes on the surface.

You also already have easy to setup caves in the game.

did you tried to generate a world with caves? it says i need multiple servers running and to set it up is not easy. also much harder if i want to play beta. because i have 3 files instead of 2 with overworld and cave.

You don't have to setup anything.

Host Game -> World -> Add Caves -> Yes -> Generate World.

The game will run two servers and link them for you.

Yes, but it laggs really bad for other players. The only way to play it without big laggs are dedicated servers and it is not easy to set them up. I looked up guides and tried to make a server with the dst dedicated server tool but i dont know how to do it in beta. i have 3 files instead of 2 for setting a server up.

If you are using the "Don't Starve Together Dedicated Server" tool of Steam, you can opt in the beta in the same way you did for the normal game.

Library -> Tools -> DST Dedicated Server -> Right Click -> Properties -> Betas.

i did. i have problem with selecting the overworld. after i downloaded it 3 files appeared. 1 for the overworld 1 for cave and 1 for beta. should i put the txt files in the beta file and change the name of the overworld to the file name beta?

Dude, I think a quick reading through the Dedicated Servers Guide Thread would help you to solve all possible troubles.

I don't even think this "EasyConfig" thing is necessary. I might be wrong tho.

Also, there is a tool on Downloads section which help you to generate worldoverrides.lua, plus a visual interface for easy shard links/sinkhole configuration.

On topic, I would write a tool for server menagement, but unfortunatelly I have no skills to do so. Most of what I have in mind can be easily done via mods by the way.

EasyConfig? That hasn't been used since... I can't remember. Follow this guide, whenever it says "DoNotStarveTogether", use "DoNotStarveTogetherANewReignBeta" instead, and change the first line from step 11 to

c:\steamcmd\steamcmd.exe +login anonymous +app_update 343050 +beta anewreignbeta +quit

And you should be good to go. Also, hosting a world with caves is always a dedicated server (two, actually), regardless of whether you launch it from within the game, through Don't Starve Together Dedicated Server or through steamcmd.
