Klei server lag

Recommended Posts

Not sure if these are underpowered now or what, but I played DST for several months during the Beta and it had many hours of fun on the Klei servers. Clayfish in particular was a favorite. But now it doesn't matter what Klei server I play on, there are frequent and egregious lag moments that are rendering the game unplayable. I am not the only one saying this. When it happens, everyone complains. "LAGGGG!!"

Means you can't do any fighting, can't enter swamp, etc.

I noticed it started when the game came out of beta and the new Charlie-related content was announced incl. new portal.

Just pointing it out because I don't see anyone else mentioning it but I do see it taking a considerable toll on the game. I wouldn't be surprised if it is a major contributing factor to a trend of reduced active players over a long period of time.

I have noticed that non-klei servers are less likely to have the problem. I can host, certain friends can host--those of us with good computers, and there is no lag all game. So I don't think its FPS or optimization related. I'd guess Klei went cheap on their servers recently.

I mean, the Klei servers run dozens of servers (with caves mind you) at the same time for many parts of the world. Do you expect there to not be any lag?

Try closing opened tabs that you aren't using at the time like Chrome. Or look for a server made for your timezone.

its definitely not a local pc resource limitation. i know because everyone in the game complains at the same time, and we're all in different parts of the game world. i'm a game programmer too and have made mods for DST. my computer is very high performance with 19gb ram free, 8-core 3.6ghz intel cpu, 2x nvidia 580 gpu in SLI, and SSD disks. chrome isn't even open when i play. these are things i thought to check first.

i am choosing servers <66 ping. clayfish happens to be 33ms ping.

Oh, yeah, definitely.  I don't know what it is, but after trying a couple of them--Clayfish in particular--I just don't play on Klei servers at all anymore.  It's kinda sad, but I'd rather actually play than rubberband all the time.  (shrug)

Well, if they can't afford to run dozens of good servers, how about invest in a few good ones instead? I say quality over quantity.

Can confirm, we suffer from rubberbanding on every official server and it's a game killer. It's frustrating not to be able to go on these servers who are nevertheless popular. It usually starts to lag when the server gets full near day 5 or 6, then you just can't get off the wild ride. Of all the servers, I'd expect the official ones to run properly. Luckily the other ones are fine.

I haven't played on the official servers but I hear about this a lot. If everyone suffers from constant rubberbanding as soon as it fills up, they either need to do something about it or lower the max players per server. Generally what I hear is it's fine until they get more than 6 people on.

You can defend the servers being laggy all you like, but it's not going to change the fact that it's an issue. A little lag is fine but rubberbanding all over almost defeats the purpose of having the servers up in the first place.
