S1RAW3S0ME
Not sure if this has been mentioned or suggested yet but a feature that I feel would liven up the community would be a map editor/creator that would allow you to build your own maps, objectives and triggers and then upload them to the steam workshop. I know there are mods that could achieve the same effect but mods are less accessible and would require everyone on the server to have the same mod installed. A map editor would add a ton of versatility and variety to the game which I feel is lacking at the moment. Not to mention playing maps with specific conditions, objectives and triggers would present new challenges. If anyone is familiar with Age of Empires 2, the map editor on that game was fantastic and very simple to use. Heck, people even made their own customs game modes. A map editor would add a ton of replay value to the game. What do you guys think? Mobbstar
This would also require an easy way to export maps and load them into the game. Sounds like a lot of effort for somebody like me, who has no idea how maps are being saved in DS. But maybe something akin to the Tiled Editor for setpieces could be useful. S1RAW3S0ME
I realize this would more of a long term project an not something that Klei could just whip together in a month (maybe they could). But let me make my case here. I'm going continue using the Age of Empires 2 (AoE) example because the map editor on that game, which came out more than 15 years ago with the base game is IMO one of the most versatile and innovative map creators to date (that I know of). This would probably be more of an expansion than just an update or add on. The map editor would have to be accessed from the main menu and would be a totally different mode than when you play the game normally. The map saving aspect would have to be compartmentalized as well but that shouldn't be a big deal since it's a completely different mode to begin with. As in the case of AoE, the saved maps could then be uploaded on the steam workshop available to download by anyone. It's really quite a sleek system and I don't think it's outside the realm of possibility at all. CarlZalph
Hey, came across this today and this is something I'm interested in. Currently am able to generate overview maps of the world from the server's saved session. http://imgur.com/a/Se8N3 Got it all parsing now, just need to know what portions of the map mean. I can assume the nav white spots are fake walls to help pathfinding, and the second layer of the tiles is for debugging of the map generation. KitcheVadimas
I'd love to play 'adventure' maps with specific stories or challenges/puzzles. You'd have to download maps from the workshop, most likely, and then add the map you want to a server similar to how you add a mod to your server. We already have a mods button on the main menu. The map editor could be accessed similarly. And with a map creator versatile enough, where you can set your own conditions, triggers, item placement etc, you could make maps with entirely new team based "game modes" such as capture the flag, king of the hill, or heck, you could even make dota/lol styled maps. The data stored in the map's session will only load if there's a loading portion in the prefabs for the entities. I don't see any section for "run this LUA code when map's loaded", though that could be added very easily as both a mod or base. Which you would need for any arbitrary running of games. Though at this point you may as well just use a mod since accessing entities in this fashion is a bit more trouble than it's worth.
