Maybe some steam library change that's invisible to us? Do you know how to get a packet capture so we can see what it's trying to DO on the internet when it hangs? Well, I may try, but after checking with some friends who also had the problems I realized they also were able to play after one of the 3 updates last week, so one of the crash fixes may have (indirectly or not) fixed the problem.
