Now that I think about it, according to the lore Maxwell wouldn't be able to read Wickerbottom's books because he's dead by the end of DS.

.... or is he? We desperately need some explanations here, my head hurts from all the intrigue

He's dead? I suppose one could think that from the ending sequence after you free him, but you get to play as him after adventure mode.

I think that "death" animation was merely him losing his immortal form since he was no longer on the throne.

Did they say why? Depending on the reason, Wicker should technically be capable of reading the Codex too.

It's been two days since i watched the stream, but i recall them saying its like that because they wanted to see how it would play out and if players would like it or not.

Well you can play as Wilson after you've completed Adventure mode with him even though he's trapped on the Nightmare Throne, so I never really thought a character being playable was proving anything. Plus if he's alive the animation was really misleading. I mean he's finally free and now you're stuck there instead of him, and he just withers away? Personally I wouldn't miss the opportunity to have Maxwell rub it in the player's face. And wasn't he pulled into the DS world against his will by the Shadow thingies? Why would he intentionally make it difficult for the player to free him if there's basically no downside? I'm not saying I'm right, I'm just saying I don't understand :p

When you're not playing as Maxwell though it's implied you're playing in the past

Plus Kevin himself said Maxwell and Wilson swap places in the timeline, implying he's still alive.

1890s - 1906: William Carter origin story
1906: William and Charlie enter the DS world.

So I guess Shipwrecked goes shoehorned here.

Wilson finds a Sea Worther, a magic item that harnesses wet magical power.

For him, it's "Scientific!". Nobody really knows what it is.

It is something though. Maxwell says it's "A cleverly assembled sea worther.". So it's an Antikythera mechanism for us.

Wilson accesses the magic of it with the Shadow Manipulator, making the Seaworthy.

Wilson takes a boat far away. Gets shipwrecked.

Makes more boats, battles the elements, climbs the volcano.

Wilson finds out that no matter how far you make it in the fog, you go back to the islands. You can't escape.

He finds the Seaworthy that brought him to this tropical paradise, and uses it to return to the main land.

Since there's no escape, he comes back with strengthened resolve and goes through Maxwell's Door.
