Tamazacat
I know that followers won't attack Them, but say I walked into a reed trap and the tentacles came out after me, would they inadvertently smack Them in the face? Edit: Ran away. Came back. Found nightmare fuel on the ground? Can They just... die? I was almost certain that wasn't a thing. Cheers, Tamazacat. Sheauwn
Normal shadow creatures are only affected by the player in some way, but AoE attacks such as gunpowder or slurtle slime explosions can kill them. I assume then that some other natural source could unintentionally damage them. Keep in mind that there are two variations of shadow creatures: the normal overworld ones and the ruin ones. The overworld shadow creatures should only drop nightmare fuel when they are killed by the player. However, ruin shadow creatures drop their fuel whenever the nightmare phase ends. Tamazacat
Ahh! That explains why it died. Thank-you!
Asparagus
btw, I think they can be killed by Allied Broken Clockworks .-. Here's the Trailer for the Don't Starve update "A Moderately Friendly Update" (I skipped to the part where A broken clockwork knight killed 2 Crawling Horrors)
Mobbstar
As said, there's two variations of shadow creatures: Sanity and Nightmare Sanity is based on, you guessed it, the character's sanity. They fade into existence when the insanity stinger plays and the vein overlay appears, and leave shortly after it disappears. They can technically be harmed by anything, but only the character can actually see and target them. EDIT: The following line is from combat.lua and literally prohibits combat between shadows and mindless creatures or (target:HasTag("shadow") and not self.inst.components.sanity) Nightmares spawn in the ruins during the, you guessed it, nightmare. They are almost identical to Sanity shadows, except that they don't require the character to be insane, and that they never leave, but rather die after dawn (end of nightmare) (reference intended). They generally stick close to the red lights they come from.

Your best bet for clearing that reed trap would be deerclops/bearger (preferably bearger.), lureplants, **** tonnes of mobs or just go ham with some dark swords. Tamazacat
Awhhh. :'( I've been using my reed trap as a giant exterminator. It allows me to be fantastically lazy! Looks like I'll be fighting Them, then! Thanks, everyone. ^_^
