Shipwrecked Observations

Recommended Posts

I have been playing Don't Starve: Shipwrecked for approximately 1 week at this point. I haven't played any of the other iterations of the game, eg, ROG, Together, etc... so I am coming at this from that perspective.

I am a very casual gamer, sometimes going weeks or even months without playing anything.

I play on a Mac.

On to my observations.

1. After a week of playing a number of characters, even Walani, I am at the point that I never die from starvation anymore, which I find somewhat humorous in a game called Don't Starve. There's food everywhere! In my last game, I'd collected so much food most of it had gone stale before I could eat it. And because birds constantly drop seeds, you could almost live on seeds alone.

2. Dogs have become so easy to dispatch at this point that I actually look forward to their arrival just so I can get the annoyance out of the way for a while. As long as I am at full health, dogs are easy to tackle. I don't know if they become more difficult later; I suspect they do.

3. What I do die from, consistently and inevitably, no matter what I do to prevent it, is poison. If it is not from those bloody yellow snakes, it is from the stink rays. Anti-venom is a challenge to make in the early part of the game, and that is when they get me. Because of this, I've gotten into the habit of searching out coral as early as possible, causing me to prioritize my goals differently than I prefer.

4. There is definitely some kind of bug on day 26. I die from my health suddenly dropping to zero with no way to prevent it. The reason in the morgue log is always "shenanigans", whatever that means.

5. I understand that not being able to start from a previously saved game after dying is a feature and not a bug in the Don't Starve universe, but man, I am so tired of having to start from the very beginning every time I die, unless I am lucky enough to have happened upon and remembered to activate the Touch Stone. The first 10 days are soooooooo tedious, and to have to go through them every single time is sooooo boring.

6. I think my favorite character at this point is Wendy. Abigail has saved my butt more often than I can count. I also have the highest number of days lived with Wendy, with Wilson coming is a close second.

7. MONKEYS! Seriously, way too many monkeys, man. Pare the number of those bad boys back to a reasonable threshold....please. They're cute so I don't want to kill them, but jeez-oh-man they make every situation more difficult, even when (or especially when) collecting necessary items, because of their overwhelming numbers, not to mention slowing my refresh rate. I haven't crashed yet because of them but it has gotten so bad that I experience keyboard and mouse delays.

8. I think the chance of finding gold is at just the right frequency. Good thing too as you need it so early in the game. I have always found gold when I have gone out to look for it, typically within three island hops.

9. Another column of storage in a chest would be nice. My efficiency goes way down when I have 3 chests lined up and I have to try to remember each one's contents during a rush situation.

10. It would also be nice to be able to break down crafted items back to their constituent components. For example, a raft, which takes 4 bamboo and 3 vines to craft, could return, say, 2 bamboo and 1 vine if broken down after assembly. Just a thought.

All in all, I am enjoying Shipwrecked. I am sure improvements and enhancements are in the works but, for now, it is adequate and playable.

Thanks for posting this! Especially as new player to DS. I remember my first attempts to survive in DS vanilla. I died 3209482349023x! I hope SW becomes bigger challenge than it is now ... since new players calling it easy :D

To your points:

1. Food is not that big of an issue in every DS game if you know how to get it

2. They wont become stronger just add numbers but that will stop too after some time (idk exact day count)

3. You could avoid those poison creatures at start, stingrays are easy to outrun and you can kill snakes easily i guess or run from them

4. I have seen this reported couple of times ... they will fix it in next update for sure

5. Well i actually still like it (idk why O.o because i made tons of fresh starts), you can play differently after you get basic resources of course. BTW with wilson you can make one item that noone else can ... try it .)

6. Other characters are easy too when you get used to their style

7. Did you try that new ball? :)

8. agreed

9. there are bigger chests in ROG so we can take those to SW or they add some bigger SW specific chests

10. Did you try hammer? .)

About number 3, more specifically the snakes, I tend to drop my bag long enough to equip seashell armor when they pop up. As it prevents poison the problem is solved rather neatly. Mind you, it is mildly annoying to run back to get the bag if I forget to reequip it before chopping the next tree.

As for monkeys, they really are a nice source of food in and of themselves. I have so much fun when I have one take out the rest for me.

1.

Jepp, its hard to starve in Don't Starve, but you can change the world gen, when it gets added to SW.

2.

More will spawn over time and diffrent ones in diffrent seasons, when you have around 10 of them

at the same time, they can stagger you to death and there is not much you can do about that.

You should build tooth traps or run to other mobs, pigs, spiders, etc.

until some of the dogs change there target. Also you can get on your boat and use range weapons.

3.

That one is easy, if you chop jungle trees and the tree falls, run away some steps from the tree

and look if a yellow snake spawned, if one spawned run away from it.

(you can also kite it, get close to her and run out of her range imidiatly,

she will attack and miss, than attack her until she dies...ctrl+F or just left click)

Don't get close to poison geysirs and stink rays (if you see there shadows, just change the direction,

also try to have a boat with a sail, so that you are fast enough to flee)

Also ignore poison spiders, step on spider turf and lure the spider out when it is day, only attack them when they are not near there nest, if you do that, no poison spider will ever spawn from the nest...

you can also use traps to catch spiders.

Seashell Armor makes you immune to poison from yellow snakes, yellow spiders and mosquitos.

Gas Mask makes you immune from poison geysirs.

Gas Mask and Seashell armor together makes you immune to Stinkrays.

You can dig up poison geysirs with a shovel, you will get venom glands 50% of the time.

Don't attack poison creatures without seashell armor if you can't kite good enough.

And don't run through a jungle biom only with a torch, the risk to get poisoned by snakes is to big.

4.

Jepp, thats a bug, I have never seen it myself, but some people reported that.

5.

You will see the start not very often if the bug at point 4 gets fixed and you get good enough at the game.

6.

Wilson is a starter char, he has no real drawbacks and is very balanced.

Wendy is very strong in SW, because at the moment there are very few strong enemys

and no bosses in SW that will destroy Abigail easily, the ROG giants will do short work with Abigail.

NOTE: Abigail does more damage at dusk and the most damage at night,

her damage on the days is not very great.

Wendys damage is only 0.75, Wilsons is 1.0, Wigfrids is 1.25 and Migthy Wolfgangs is 2.0.

(standard damage in DS is Wilsons 1.0)

7.

If you see monkeys burn down all there houses

(they won't attack you, if you hammer down there houses instead you will get some materials,

but they will all attack you and your sanity will most likly drop to zero),

you can chop trees down to get bananas, feed bananas to 4-5 monkeys,

they will be tamed for a while, then attack a untamed monkey, they will slaughter each other.

You can also wait, spiders, hounds and snakes

will kill all monkeys eventually if you burned down all monkey spawners.

8.

Jepp, thats my opinion too.

9.

Try to make one chest for logs, twigs and gras.

One chest for all minerals: flint, rock, nitre, gems, gold.

One chest for clothes, hats, silk, snake skn, etc.

One chest for armors, helmets, weapons, etc.

You will remember fairly quickly where your items are stored.

10.

You can break down several items with the hammer, you will get 50% of the material that way.

There is also a magic staff that breaks down items for 100% of there materials, but it is not in SW yet.

Don't use ctrl+F unless you want to attack a neutral mob. Clicking F alone will suffice.
