Seriously, it isn't a currently usable fertilizer, which was my first guess. So, bait, or even adding composting for gardens(farms)? Normally, you don't add meat of any kind to a compost bin, or the waste from any meat eater. As bait, it could up your chance say 15-30 percent when fishing... and compost, well, could you do vermicular compost, with worms, and maybe have a percentage fight with compost worms?

OMG are u serious. I've been throwing them away like a pansey. Do you realize how useful bone shards are. u can make so much gear with it. Well of course u know u mentioned it in ur post!

I've been throwing spoiled fish away for a long time too and I found out you can break them for bone shards through sheer luck. Just had a hammer in my hand while hopping past one and noticed there's the "Hammer" prompt.

 

And yeah, after that discovery many crafting items suddenly seemed much less unattainable than before

I wasnt sure what to do with that rotten fish first, had few laying around my camp then one day i was passing by and tried to smash it with hammer and voila it worked.
