What is this post about?I will talk about my idea regarding this topic, and this post should also serve as a place to discuss about it. Let's start!I actually found one post where a person said that the devs may plan to add skin drops.When you play, you can get a random piece of a skin.. and if you have all of them, you can combine them to actually create the skin. I am not sure if this is true or if it will happen,so I will just leave this here and talk about it later. Unlocks!A good idea would be, if the skin unlocks would be designed like small challenges.What do you mean by that? Some people may ask..Let me just give you 2 examples:1. Defeat the Spider Queen as Wendy.2. Survive 40 days (from day 1) without killing rabbits. Why these challenge-like unlocks?Let's face it.. Who wouldn't like showing off his hardly earned skin in a public game?Challenges make the player feel like he really earned the skin and like he did something great. Players that have lost interest in the game (for whatever reason) may come back to give it a shot.These little challenges could add some variety, if you have already played the game for a long timeand they would give you the possibility to do things different(which would make no sense in a normal game). And the last point I want to talk about are new players.As a new player you will probably worship someone with a cool skin more than someone without..Why do you make a point about this?Well.. think about it.. people tend to judge someone by looks.. and if you look experienced in a game, people will trust you more. They will listen more carefully to that person and may actually learn a lot while playing with them.. ConclusionI don't say that these "challenges" should be insanely hard.. they should just add something interesting so you have a good experience while unlocking a skin for a charakter you like.The "random unlocks or drops" aren't a bad idea (i mean they work perfectly fine in tf2) and it feels nice to see a present popping up randomly and all you did was play the game. But unlike tf2,Don't Starve Together is able to add something interesting like these small "challenges".. tf2 wouldn't work well with a system like that. Let's discuss! Auth Posted September 29, 2015 Share Posted September 29, 2015 Sounds an awful lot like achievements, which if you ask me does not and never will fit Don't Starve. This type of topic has come up repeatedly. As for my take on how skins should be distributed, I think they should be given to you as a wrapped gift, and you can only have one at a time. This prevents "idling" (Not sure how idling on don't starve is possible, but okay) for new items. It would require you to go to, say, a science machine or alchemy engine to open. Heck, if they wanted to make it a challenge, add a "skin-maker-erator" craftable under the science tab and it's only purpose is to open wrapped gifts. Also, Klei, can we get an emote similar to this one -> but instead make it say "No Achievements"? Carnifex Posted September 29, 2015 Author Share Posted September 29, 2015 My intention wasn't to make it like achievements, sorry if it sounded a bit like that.I actually like your idea quite a lot, but when I thought about a mechanic, i wanted something that would change the players mindset.So they have to do something, that they wouldn't have to do if they would play normally.. change the perspective from which they see things. And the idea is to also reward them for trying new playing methods (methods that actually make something a bit harder and force you to find another solution). Players will also improve a lot in the game (e.g. if they can't kill a rabbit for the skin unlock, they have to think about other ressources that are good to "farm").So they will not only take the skin, but also experience from completing the challenge. Capek Posted September 29, 2015 Share Posted September 29, 2015 A skin system like that would increase this games life by a god-damn-high-number-fold. You wanna have the golder warrior skin? Oh you better freaking slay 1000 giants in 10 days! That's right!!! I am the mighty slayer of all giants fear me and my armor!!! But seriously though, once you figure out this game it gets extremly monotone, even with character variety. You can eat fruits? Boom! Dragon Pie and you win. You're abigail? Kill dozens of pigs make a huge drying rack and honey farm. Boom! You survive. If the point of the game is to only survive, you avoid all giants and get protection by pigs and beefalos for hound attacks. After 50 hours you'll never ever have a problem surviving. Adding to that: If there were to be such a skin pieces dropping system I would get annoyed as hell having to kill x amount of enemies just to get that one drop.... i probably wouldnt even try and the game would stay as monotone as it is. TheKingofSquirrels Posted October 1, 2015 Share Posted October 1, 2015 I miss the whole un-locking character´s mechanic the game used to have and having something to look forward to when you finally die. So it would make sense to replace that with clothing items. The more days you survived, the more stuff you get, until you collect them all.
