Zackreaver
Like, really boring, not hard mind you. Surviving summer isn't the problem, it's just a very dull season. You get your thermal stone, you keep it nice and cool in an ice box, maybe you have a snow chester, or a nice eyebrella from slaughtering deerclops last winter. Now your going to the desert to harvest those cactus flowers. And then you... Wait till summer ends... Very Very Boring, during autumn we can chop down birchnut trees for their birchnuts, and occasionally deal with poison trees, also bearger says hello. Winter we got walrus's to hunt, penguins to chill by and mine their ice, and deerclops to lure into swamps to murder the tentacles. During spring, we can either hunt some Moose/Goose for their feathers, kill charged volt goats for their milk, and... I swear there was 1 more thing I might be forgetting. But summer... we collect cactus flowers and occasionally deal with firehounds. And if we have farms they grow stuff fast but that's about it. With dragonfly being a domesticated encounter that just minds her own business, there's nothing really to look forward too. I'm not surprised that some players don't want to deal with summer, it's just kinda boring. We could use a type of walrus enemy for summer, I have an idea that's goofy. How about a cave man frozen in ice, and the ice only melts during summer. Call it a troglodice (troglodyte in ice) Killing it makes it drop ice and a chilled amulet, maybe cause that amulet worked really really well on it. Additionally, the mob lets you obtain ice even when all the glaciers have melted, but you simply have to deal with the mob. Oh and with caves coming out, it should be something you find in caves obviously. It could be a sort of wandering mob, going around maybe destroying buildings it comes across, after all it's probably some thug with a club. But that's just my general idea, I feel like there should be something to do in summer aside from just collect cactus flowers and not die from overheating. I've seen this mod http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=172352990which does an interesting edition to each of the seasons, adding a unique koalefant to it, as well as one for unique events like full moons. It's a nice little start, but it would also be nice to get excited for summer for a specific drop. After all, we used to wait for summer to kill dragonfly and get the loot, but now we don't need summer for that, so it feels a little empty now. Lumina
http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=409858663 <- here the DST version of the mod. And i agree, summer is boring, and not because of difficulty. There is somewhere another topic on the same problem. It's, for me, about the lack of goal. You have a lot to do in the first autumn, some exclusive things to do in winter, you must prepare for summer in spring, but in summer, you have all you need and you spend summer trying to not lose everything.. But you gain nothing. A special monster will be a start. Not enough, for me, but a start. I would also like seeing a monster who is in the cave during winter (hibernate) and outside during summer. You can't find it in others seasons. Would be fun Link to comment https://forums.kleientertainment.com/forums/topic/57991-summer-is-boring-how-about-something-to-hunt/#findComment-674501 Share on other sites
Lampofulmine
To solve the problem of boring summer going underwater would be a perfect solution what do you reckon ?! When caves will be added we'll make CitD compatible with both DS and DST so it won't matter which version you'll play: summer won't be boring anymore ! merkmerk73
Summer is boring but it's also a chore. And I just can't get behind the whole 'random **** smolders and causes fires so you need gears for a flingomatic which also puts your camp fire out so base placement becomes a concern' and the new endothermic fires which take nitre, or the pit which takes a ridiculous amount of stuff. To your point OP, I don't like the lack of content in the summer either - it definitely needs new things to do/hunt, and smoldering should probably just go away completely with withering being the problem (and what flingers solve) Also, since endothermic fires don't allow us to cook, maybe they should allow us to freeze food so it lasts longer? werlpolf
I came once to the idea, that another type of hunter will make his home at walrus-camp. Then these camps will not only be occupied in winter but also in summer. What kind of hunter depends. Maybe a type of cat with fire-hounds, which hunts only at night or dusk. Zackreaver
here the DST version of the mod. Oh, I didn't realize I didn't realize I linked the single player version. I already know of the DST version, I was just mentioning that there should be more things to do for summer, and that koalephant mod is a step in the right direction. To your point OP, I don't like the lack of content in the summer either - it definitely needs new things to do/hunt, and smoldering should probably just go away completely with withering being the problem (and what flingers solve) I don't really mind the smoldering that much, in DST there's a built in setting for the world to regenerate very slowly overtime, so stuff being permanently destroyed by the fire is fine. I'm fine with the potential loss of stuff, it's similar to how deerclops can demolish your base when he attacks. They can both be avoided by going out of your base and exploring during such times. Granted the major problem is there isn't much to do in summer I came once to the idea, that another type of hunter will make his home at walrus-camp. Then these camps will not only be occupied in winter but also in summer. I think i'd rather their camp locations be separate with their own graphic, similar to the walrus. But I'd also prefer to see something a little more unique. Since dragonfly is no longer a seasonal boss, perhaps we can get a new roaming summer giant? Perhaps one that doesn't attempt to burn everything and instead smash stuff like clops and bearger. Some summer unique loot I feel would help with the boredom in summer, as most people just want to skip it since it feels like a chore. I've asked my server before if they wanted me to skip winter since they seemed like they were struggling, but they were fine with winter and in fact they were all out hunting walrus's happily. Not sure if the same answer would come from summer, but granted the base was well flinged. Brain
I've started developing a mod to address this issue but never quite finished, it is called "Better Hunting", and I posted the design project on the mod forum.I will probably resume dev with focus on DST since for single player we will have shipwrecked soon. BipedalBear
Abstract(TL;DR): Add Pig Knight in summer igloo camp. Drop saddle,a movable pot and PogChamp https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/kappa-everywhere-global-t/jafkphjeboadjffjfcigcdfdilpcacod?hl=en I've thought about an idea back in RoG beta.As someone suggested about adding bears in summer where the walrus used to spawn, why not expand on that idea. Instead of bears, how about a place where you could fight a pig living in it's bricked house? So I brainstormed an idea on the bus: As Don't Starve is based off of Fairy Tales(Alice???) and some Germanic old stories, I want to expand on the background of Willson's adventure. From Three Little Pigs, each types of pigs inhabited different houses;Guardian pigs live near their pig toches and grasses, village pigs live in their wooden houses, where is the third bred of pigs? They live igloo shaped brick-and-mortal houses of course!(suggestion: change igloo's sprite colour panels into red-orange-grey). Every summer, a pig would build a house on the foundation of Igloo, and when a player trespasses it's territory, it will come out and drive the player away. Here is the design of the boss:a pig on a saddled wolf. Remember back then Klei decided to release an expansion with beefalo riding? What if the saddle cannot be crafted? Instead, you have to kill this pig knight in order to loot it's saddle. The pig knight has 2 abilities: one is tied with varg(summon fire hounds) and one is tied with Moose(disarm player). It will drop a saddle(25%), a pot helmet(25%), a stack of stone walls(100%) and monster meat(100%). Pot helmet acts the same way as crock pots, except you can only place it on a camp fire and can pick up the pot after fire is extinguished. This way, you have to party up and do something to get that sweet beefalo mount.Think about this, you can swagger your status with a beefalo mount on top of a tam o' shanter and cane. Kreygasm Here is my suggestion, I might commission silhh to make the sprites.
