They'll walk right up to it, completely ignoring you, and then you *WHACK* 'em as they pass. Get to keep the berry too, which is good for crockpot filler, esp. w. legs. It's not like the workaround, start it cooking then go out and do some stuff away from base for the day, isn't easy -- it is -- it's just that it's not as great a dish for killing time cooking during the night.
