Spider Silk/Gland farm

Recommended Posts

Hi guys,

Just wanted to show you a way to farm alot of silk and spider glands in an easy and low-effort way.

2014-04-19_00003_zps16215281.jpg

As shown in the screenshot you just build a decent sized wall AROUND a cave entrance and take only 2 rock lobsters to the surface, because they will breed like they wont see another day.

Put 2/3 egg sacks, to your liking at one side of the wall and place some kind of mineral behind the wall.

If you build it half a screen away from your base, it will constantly be active. Since the Rock Lobsters will try to get to the mineral (like flint) behind the wall they will keep walking in the spider den zone and that results in spider attacks :-).

You can also build it away from the cave entrance so you can farm monster meat, bats usually eat the meat before I can get to it.

2 rock lobsters will still eventually infest the entire world.

I would rather just kill the spiders myself though.

They breed, but never really bred outside of the walls. Don´t worry, tried it out on a smaller scale and they never crossed the walls. Besides, give em a few flints, go to the caves for 5 min and you´re done diminishing their surface population.

I know it´s powerfull, been playing around with them too. But sometimes when I start in lets say Spring, I need to go through about 60 days to complete one houndius shootius. This quick little build takes about 1 day´s worth of farming and 2 segments worth of searching for two Rock Lobsters.

I wouldnt bring a rock lobster to the surface for this, doesnt seem worth it, unless you're telling me that they wont breed if theres only 2 of them- I prefer to use rabbit hutches for my silk farm (or pig houses in early game).

Having got enough materials to build 1 hutch from the caves, to farm more i like to kite a few treegaurds into a decent sized enclosure then pacify them there be planting trees around the outside of the enclosure (later i'll need to burn the trees down in order to pacify more treegaurds, thats why it's advisable to put them on the outside). Then i'll set up a bunny hutch inside the enclosure. Bunnymen will agro onto the treegaurds every time they leave their home, treegaurds will one shot them, you get to pick up the free meat+bunnypuffs+carrots.

Can you do a screenshot next time and link me into wherever you post it? I wanna see.

Something is up with screenshots. I click "copy path", then "image" and paste the image, but then when I hit post, it doesn't post, just deletes it.

This build was meant for early days, I can get this built around day 10 and leave it forever. Does a houndius shootius shoot automatically?

An experienced player can have a houndius shootius at day 40. If you know what you are doing in the ruins, of course.

As soon as you have the eye, bring 6 bee mines, an ice staff, the eye, a miner hat, and maybe a walking cane. Then find the fuzzy rhino, and freeze it. While it is frozen, plant the bee traps by a ledge, so he stops there. Then they will trigger, and the bees will kill the rhino. Take the theulicite from the chest he drops, and craft it. Place it in some walls on the silk ground, and watch it kill.

The houndius shootius has 1000ish health and regens 10 per sec, so don't worry about it dying.

Lol, as I said, starting in spring wont grant me the houndius shootius untill day 60 plus. My RL gives me what I want at day 10.

Early game my build will have the advantage, late game, sure a houndius shootius can be build for replacement.

Also, 12 gunpowder and 1 blowdart is way easier for the fuzzy :p.

That's provided you get the visit of a very important giant during your first winter. I'm nearing day 300, I have fought a lot of giants, I have an ancient guardian's horn waiting in a chest, but the deerclops never showed up, ever. I'm in summer right now and I'm waiting desperatly for the next winter. I don't want to use the console to spawn a deerclops. But yeah, it doesn't take too much time to get the horn if you know what you are doing =)

You should put giants on more, then they will come every season 100% garantueed :D, hell put treeguard on more too :)

With bee boxes, it is easy to make the traps, and WAY more funny to see an intimidating, powerful, fuzzy rhino get overpowered by bees. And RL's take over the world. One got up 70 days ago on mine, now they have covered almost the whole map.

My houndius shootius doesn't shoot automatically D:????

Update of the silk farm, might expand it to 5 denn and 5 lobster. Almost got a chest full of glands..lol

It's either not shooting automatically because your game is bugged, or the targets are not close enough.

I don't remember if it can shoot through walls.

Guess its the last one, it can shoot through walls.

I think I prefer my gangsta lobsters above a miniature version of the evil eye (LOTR).

I'll post a screenie when I am done expanding.

If I remember correctly, the Houndius Shootius will attack any mob that the player attacks first OR mobs that attempt to attack the player. This can be easily verified. That is probably why it is not shooting at the spiders: they are not attacking you and you are not attacking them.
