Advice on what to do next

Recommended Posts

So I've finally learned enough to have got to winter (year 21, standard mode) with about 50 rabbits in boxes/chester, a wooden perimeter, crock pot, science machine and alchemy lab and also lightning rod. I have excesses or very easy routes for anything easy - meaning it's excursions for spiders or pigs. I set up in a forest near a 3 biome split where there are rabbits, lots of berries, etc... food is a non-issue and I'm sure I'll be ok in winter with my heatstone, full beard and rabbit earmuffs. Stone/gold are both easy to get but I've been using that to save time and haven't got a ton of it yet. (whenever I first find gold I mine about 15 of it so I won't have to travel back to the quarry which for me never seems to be findable from spawn)

So now that I've got an OK start I'm a little nervous. I was going to start hunting spiders during the day to build up a supply of silk. I really really really need hounds teeth or an entry trap of some kind, the first 6 did not drop any at all and I'm nervous about the hound attacks getting worse....

So where from here? Do I go into making magic? Farm enough silk for the hat/etc and make the magic machine? I have never got that far and I'm not sure where to start.

I would say do what you think is right. If you are scared of hound attacks you can either make some kind of defense mechanism or you can make sure you are able to resurrect yourself. A defense mechanism could be pig houses. The pigs can distract the hounds so that you can easily kill tem. A way to resurrect yourself could be finding touchstones or making meat effigy. Hope this helps :)

Thanks for the reply. I guess I figured out how to back up my saves? I don't plan on abusing it though. So we'll see what happens. Right now I'm basically standing at the fire waiting for winter to end.

A quick aside - why does my character always look super tired? Will enough sleep cure this?

Yes, I also wait most of the time during winter. How high is your sanity? The character usually start holding its head when sanity is really low. Is that what you mean? If not, I have no idea. Sleep won't make the character look less tired, except when low sanity is the case. Sleep basically restores health and sanity while it consumes a lot of hunger.

Problems I constantly seem to have:

Can't find quarry/gold fast enough to get log vest/spear for first hounds (sometimes despite doing nothing but foraging and looking for it) so GG

Can't find the beefalo (I always seem to find chester really fast though)

Can't find spiders (silk is a tier 1 requirement so GG) and/or can't find enough spiders or spiders aren't dropping silk only meat

Can't find pigs (sucks but not game-ending right away)

If frogs rain on your base good luck (gg)

Flowers: What controls how they respawn if at all?

It seems that honey can be quite time consuming which means you have to have a vector to production... what is it? I never seem to be able to get enough silk fast enough. However it is totally awesome for everything (makes monster meat edible, saves all winter) so ignoring it is tough, too

It seems like some people who play this game know something that I am missing that makes it a lot harder for me.

It seems like some people who play this game know something that I am missing that makes it a lot harder for me.

1) Just use a spear/grass suit if you aren't properly prepared with football helm and log suit. Basic kiting strat: Run from the hounds, they are faster than you and will catch up, then attack. They have to stop moving when thay attack, and have to wait to do it again. So after they stop the animation, run in, hit one, and start running again. Rinse and repeat.

2)Beefalo are not a necessity. If you are wilson your bear keeps you warm right? Also breezy vest doesn't need wool.

3) It is definitely not cheating to set them to more, if need be. Also look for the stone road. 95% of the time there will be a pig village on one of the ends, or both. Most of the time pig villages have a forest around them, which in turn usually have a few dens.

4)Follow stone road.

5)Uncommon, but you should be fine if you have a fire staff/run to pig village.

6)Flowers spawn butterflies. Catch butterflies and plant them for more flowers. Everything in that cycle is renewable, so I have like 50 flowers by my bee box area, they make honey as fast as crap.

7)Honey, just have bee boxes, and plant some flowers near them. Boards aside, destroying a bee box gives you everything you need, as long as you catch the bees.

8) The experienced people do have something you are missing. Experience. For example, the other day around day 100, I was in the ruins, and tried to use the telelocator staff to leave. It fell like 7 rocks on me, then I died. I will never die that way again. The best way to get better is to look at how you died, and not make that mistake again, so you can't really control that.

Hope I was of help.

The Swamp is dangerous but if you find that before pigs it's a great way to kill hounds early on, bee boxes are one of the last things I build... first I build the science machine and build the back pack and shovel as soon as possible (graveyards are often littered with gold) as I explore I dig up every berry bush... it gives you the berries and you can plant them later

check in youtube: Yukitsu times.

When I was new to the game i watched some videos and he was what i think 1 of the persons who understand the game better than most.

This is without ROG, i think it's better too understand the game first for you play the DLC. Before i  watched him my best save was around 30-40 days, now every save is around 100-200 or more days

I'm doing better now :-) Just went and hunted the wumpus and made the puffy vest. Have died twice and had a few insanely close calls. The spike traps are awesome though, the hounds totally die on them before they even get to me. Oh and also I'm not using any mods that cheat, just the minimap and the grid placement thing (which didnt help) and the mod that pauses the game when you are in the crafting menu. oh and no saves or anything either.
