I want to leave the Ruins in ruins!

I am going to say something that may shock and offend you all.

I've never been in the Ruins long enough to really "get" them.

Just the optionality of it all has kept me from getting around to it, but if I'm going to start writing stories about Ruin-centric elements I need to get nice and cozy down there. What can you guys tell me to make sure my trip is equal to or less than vacationing in New Jersey, danger-wise?

So long as you bring some (5-10) rock lobsters down from the caves, and make sure to set up your base a couple screens away from any nightmare cracks (their location is 100% consistant) and nightmare lights, then you more or less have nothing to worry about at where ever you make your base. Besides the periodic falling rocks and occasional depths worm "hound" waves anyways, which you brought the rock lobsters for the very purpose of not having to care about the latter.

You're not the only one. I'm still mastering Caves so I will be ready once the time comes to survive better on level 2/Ruins.

That suggestion on camping near fissures?

Completely missed that.

And for some reason, thought Rock Lobsters would overpopulate on that level. Stupidly slapping my head and remembering to bring them next time I feel brave enough for a looksie.

My advice is to ALWAYS wear armor. Once you get stuck on the middle of countless hallucinations you will understand what i'm saying. Also, bring a Tam or your sanity restoring item of preference.

If you are going to make a camp there, make sure you don't make near any nightmare crack, as Full Metal Kirby said, and monkey huts (Not sure if this is the name). The monkeys are an annoyance and they steal even from Chester and Backpacks on the ground.

As far as i know, those ponds on the ruins don't spawn anything so it's probably a good idea to make a base near one. It's a nice emergency food source.

The worms wave problem can be solved exactly like the hound waves, make huge tooth trap camps. But until you make one, bring some rock lobsters.

I'm not an expert on ruins but this is what i learned on my short trips.

What do you mean those Monkeys steal from Ches... *grumbles* I see.

The ponds are spawned like "Cave Ponds" (so no frogs) except for one thing:

You catch eels in them. It's a fish (drying rack rules apply,) but eels make it possible to craft the Unagi food with some other specific (uncookable) vegetable food.   I will say it's one of those "boutique" foods that you should look at the other stats besides hunger.

I had to see on the crock pot simulator for this "unagi", i didn't knew about it.

Leave the meat at home, bring as many carrot as you can, and make friends.

This gif is disturbing  :hypnotized:

But bunnies aren't that good if you want to take the meat that worms drop...

What I did was:

1. Establish a "Forward Base of Operation" (my base is near the ponds and light flowerss)

2. Build a fire pit, tent, 4 crock pots, drying rack and an ice box

3. Bring and plant saplings, grasses, Evergreens and bush berries (mine was around 40,40, and 30 respectively)

4. Build as many bunny hut as possible (dont forget about the "NO MEAT POLICY"). There the best ally against depthworms. (Ive got 5 at the moment but im going to add more)

5. Bring rock lobsters. Dont mind about pigs! They only stay inside their house when in ruins.

6. Bring always armor, weapons, Tam o shanter, Miner's hat with fuel and food supply. ( It depends what you like)

This what I did. Hope youll find this usefull!
