I actually planned to read both but I was only able to read on flowers and the fuelweaver and up to the part about Ancient Fuelweaver skeleton already be seen in the ancient artwork. Sadly my nerves didn't allow me to read any further (or maybe not even will allow me to continue reading) for a lot of different reasons a) DST Lore being a stress for me in general with all those new things being added b) it is tumblr, I more or less told myself to never (or at least not in my current 'social-media-phobia' state) to disable my website blocker for tumblr again. I had to disable it in order to start reading and although I stayed on the text conversation alone my stresslevel was raising so badly I had to leave before being able to finish the whole text on Maxwell and Charlie (I'm so sorry ;;)

No need to apologize! I understand perfectly! Both for not trusting an infamously unreliable website, and for feeling stressed out about the lore, so there is absolutely no pressure to read any of that! I personally enjoy using Tumblr for long posts and topics that seem too "random" to share on the forums (or when I don't mind conversation, but don't want to literally invite it). But I figured I could at least share the links in case you wanted to take a look. And you gave it a try, so I appreciate that! ^^

The way you talked about the flowers was also really poetic in a way. It fits Maxwell!  :wilson_flower:

Well tumblr can be a great place for art and fandom stuff and cosplays and roleplays (before they started to rely more and more on moneytization and content restriction), actual reason why I first joined it years ago, sadly I noticed it's also a "great" place for trolls and way too much topics that I get positively or negatively obsessed about without /actually/ being able to avoid them, like basically every social media turned out to be for my mind, so I thought: OK I have finally became active in a one-topic-fandom-forum again (NOSTALGIA!), it's time to say good bye to social media. (maybe returning one day when my fear of the negative side effects is less again, or maybe giving deviantart another chance...but then I get so irritated by changes, and it seems every places that isn't a forum tries to change themselves into generic social media websites, that it is unlikely I will ever feel "home" there again like in the old times.)

Maybe I will continue reading the post about Charlie and Maxwell when I am feeling less worried about "enabling my tumblr account" or browsing tumblr again. Thanks for not thinking my reason for closing the side again was silly. x)

Anyway:

I didn't meant it to make my thoughts on Maxwell sound poetic lol But thanks for saying this, I suppose, it probably just happened to be read easier then my usual insomnia+anxiety-or-euphoria-induced faster-writing-than-being-able-to-handle-my-tousand-thoughts-at-once rambling.

Also Maxwell's thoughts on the cactus flower that this part of the cactus is always nice, probably says he still aknowledges positive flowers (and the nice part still maybe being able to show in himself) despite the influence of the fuel making him want to stomp on flowers (and probably fueled his urge for destruction in general).

About Maxwell's irrational urge to stamp on the flowers I just want to add something funny that always comes into my mind when reading this:

Hillarious cartoony stereotype of a cartoony villain stomping on flowers in a ridiculously cartoony way x) [I would love to draw this so much or create an idle animation for my tall custom Maxwell doing this in-game. But I fear I currently can't but I can't get this picture out of my mind since the first time I made Maxwell inspect a flower xP ]

I would never judge. The internet has grown more and more hostile in general, and it's even worse for artists at the moment. I abandoned Instagram and Twitter myself, and I was away from Tumblr for a long time while I made my home on Bluesky and learned to glaze my images. Many artists were bullied away completely and I miss seeing their works, but it's what it is... It's a game of cat and mouse with all the spying and scraping going on. I've personally managed to avoid getting into any fandom drama at least. ^^"

In any case, I'm glad you've found your home here! I'm always so grateful that we still have these forums!

I would LOVE to see your take on that! :D

Until then, take this doodle:

OH NO XD It's looks soooooo extremly similar to what I had in mind! XD Now I would know even less how to draw it without it looking too much like yours, pose wise.

(I adore your doodle so much! :wilson_ecstatic: Now I just wish I was able to create custom standalone animations instead of just making tiny placeholder changes on pre-existing ones, because this would be my only way to make something with my idea now.)

And about tumblr: YES I am one of those hobby / beginner artists + roleplayer + cosplayer who has been bullied away from tumblr and in conclusion (out of paranoia and seeing it also turned more and more into a socialmedia-clone like the road tumblr took) from every other website I used to upload stuff.

But gladly forums like here STILL exist, although for now this one is the only one that I have found which is similar enough to the fandom forums of my youth x) So basically my whole internet-activities are now taking place HERE and nowhere else (asides passively collecting information). I don't miss it so far :'3 The only thing I DO miss is non-canon fandom talk / stuff and different fandoms blending into each other x)

Haha, great minds think alike! And no worries! I mean, I drew this based on YOUR description, so it's me stealing your idea, not the other way around. So feel free to draw yours as similar as you feel like. xD

And again, I'm really sorry that you've had such negative experiences with social media. But also, it feels liberating to just have that one place that feels like home. ^^

x) It seems my description was surprisingly accurate this time, then, way better then I could have been drawing it. I am too busy for doing art atm, anyway (asides from working on Maxwell mod stuff), so I am more then glad to know here is a funny drawing by someone else that looks like that particular Maxwell-stomps-on-flowers-in-a-silly-way imagination of mine. :3

I could have easily be doing this 10 years ago, I mean shifting my activity to this place, but I was honestly TERRIFIED of interacting with the DS fandom because I joined the forum around the time when DST lore had replaced DS lore and I felt like: Nuuuuuuuuu I am doomed to be an OUTCAST once again! I better never interact with other DS fans or else I will never be able to enjoy this game in peace!

Turns out this fandom forum is among the "friendliest" when it comes to not-canon-or-weird-headcanons apparently and won't attack someone immediately for not following everything canon says? And this WITHOUT there being a seperate subforum for fanon-talk and fanon/au-ideas. But then I may not know the bigger picture as I don't see much fanon stuff going on here, anyway. No matter what, I am glad I overcame my "fear" of being an active member of a fandom community again (and it pays off, or else I would probably have never seen anyone drawing this funny Maxwell-being-a-cartoony-villain doodle now x) )

My sister was hospitalized for a while, so I've spent a lot of time with her three children this month. Of course the way I'd keep them entertained was to introduce them to Don't Starve, which included drawing some of the characters from memory.

These were made with thick colored pencils (the kind meant for babies):

DEFAULTimg20240909_11105109bae29c4b2-5b49-4fa5-ad94-b14897e82665.jpg.705f384d42c9852cac91490edd6bb104.jpg

My niece was absolutely delighted by that and wanted the doodles, so it's hers now. :)

These "paper dolls" were made with various markers instead (also from memory):

DEFAULTIMG_20240917_154618cd909ea6b-3da3-4989-a8e0-2a7b1b466628.jpg.ee98d6407f896ab549c1b30911559911.jpg

That's literally half of the playable characters + Charlie. The kids love watching the animated shorts and run to pick up the paper doll for whichever character happens to be on screen at the time. :D

And once the kids were gone, I entertained myself by making Maxwell suffer - as one does... ^^"

Here is a fic: https://archiveofourown.org/works/58292971

And this thing (I swear I just wanted to draw his arms and it turned out like this):

DEFAULTNot_so_dapper_nowa5eb7f39-449c-4825-8a36-320a85dd7c2f.jpg.9ed1abb7437204e6ef1227e977b3123f.jpg

All traditional art / doodles this time, since I'm busy with several zine pieces at the moment (but I probably won't be doing this a lot later, since I was visited by Charlie and she stole the lights from my room, so it will be a bit too dark to draw on paper from now on, so enjoy the doodles while it lasts. ^^" )

Fair enough! But I'm glad you are here now, and that it's been a pleasant experience! ^^

Fandom always comes with two sides, but I think the good things easily overshadow the bad, and make it worth interacting with others. Nothing wrong with playing it safe though. :)

Those paper dolls are so adorable x3 makes me nostalgic of the times of my childhood/youth when I kept making paper dolls of my favourite cartoon characters (drawn in the most childish way, though lol so I doubt anyone would have recognized their identity) and played with them to make up for not being able to get any merch-toys x)

Awww man, I wish I could have successfully introduced any of my younger (or older) friends to Don't starve x') Sadly it had only been the other way round. ( Though I am still WORKING on it :D One friend may become a DS/ROG/SW/HAMLET player, when the xbox version becomes more controller friendly one day? )

Awww, thank you! And best of luck in recruiting some buddies!

My nephews and niece are still way too young to actually play (and young enough that I need to be a bit selective with the animated shorts I'll let them watch - or at least make sure I'm willing to guide them through the scary moments by giving them an age-appropriate explanation on what's happening), but I'd be happy to teach them to play in the next few years, if they are still interested. I've been in the fandom for this long, I don't mind waiting some more. ^^

Meanwhile, I have managed to get a few friends to play, and they just recently defeated the Celestial Champion, and I couldn't be more proud! We rarely play together, but I'm happy I was able to "pass the torch", so to say. :D

As for me, I still remember how I got into DS. It was through fan art on Deviantart. ZombiDJ's comic, to be precise. It was interesting and just the right amount of dark and twisted to catch my interest, and I really liked Wilson in the comic, so I got curious and wanted to see the source material for myself.

I was a big fan of Wilson already before I even started to play, and that just grew as I was playing, but somehow, as soon as I stopped being a lurker and started interacting with people on the forums, I immediately ended up adopted by the Maxwell fans. I still don't know why they'd collectively take me under their wing, but they did, and I got to see the game from their point of view, making me extremely curious about Maxwell. And just then the William Carter puzzle shenanigans happened, and I became irreversibly invested in Maxwell's side of the story, like I am today. xD

I'm eternally grateful for the warm welcome and the kindness and acceptance that the Maxwell fandom showed me at the time, so I've wanted to forward the gesture to new players I encounter. :love_heart:

Well when I spoke about "recruiting" I was actually talking about the singleplayer game only, since both my friends and me are not that enthuisiastic about online gaming ^^ But if I ever found a new friend maybe who would like to play as Wilson and doesn't mind my AU version of how DST game could be played I would of course immediately invited them to get sabotaged by my able-to-play-illainous modded Maxwell xD But atm I don't even have friends who could play DST with me, since those who are into videogames (not 3D graphic only) do NOT own a pc or those who did are not around anymore. (like my friend from the clinic who introduced me to DS when it was still in the chromestore x3 If it wasn't for her it would have probably been a former roommate who would have introduced me to the steam version later. (But HE introduced me to the secret adventure mode x3 Gladly AFTER I went from considering Maxwell "That annoying guy!" to considering him "That handsome villain guy with the harmonium voice!" (he used to be annoying to me because I remember back when his voice basically was Wilson-going-through-extreme-puberty pitch xD)

So I suppose journey into the way I am inside this fandom by now is kind of similar to yours (Ah I also remember when I used to "harvest" every kind of fanart I could find on Deviantart and the rest of the internet lol. Happy times <3 They just made me love my favourite characters EVEN MORE. Sadly I didn't draw them back then *only started drawing DS stuff recently* or else I may have somehow come into contact with the fandom earlier. I fear having been isolated from the actual fandom so much and losing contact to those two people who made me the fan I am today made me dive into 'alternative' versions of the fandom so heavily that my main AU is veeeery different then the actual canon. [which makes me a super outcast in this fandom ONCE AGAIN(!) but it's ok I got used to it being this way by now.])

Anyway good that you keep your small friends safe from the scary-ness of DS x3 It's really quite dark and I get how it may scare younger people. Not sure how I would have reacted to it if I had been younger........but then when I look back at other fandoms I have been inside since young age, I suppose the scary stuff would have simply went over my head for a looong time. (The only thing that would actually SCARE me at a young age would be the skeleton in Wilson's house being seen in forbidden knowledge (rip how would my young me know that I am a goth later?), and of course Wes balloons since balloons were a big trauma for me as a child xD Ironically that was one of my worst fears (that I successfully overcame xD Or else Wes only ability would be a living nightmare for me lol). And I can guarantee if the videos had not been watched at low volume then Maxwell's harmonium sound laughter would have DEFINITELY scared me, but not from the voice but because it would have been an unexpected noise.)

Ah, that's fair! And if you ever want to play with me, feel free to poke me on Steam (same name, you'll find me). You know I won't judge, and I used to play as Wilson all the time, so that's absolutely fine by me. The worst that can happen is that I freeze because of lag, since my computer is half dead, but as long as we aren't doing anything super challenging, it should be fine. xD

And I feel you there. The friends I had in the fandom 10 years ago have moved on to other things. I still keep in touch with one, but we are in totally different fandoms these days. But it's not like I didn't take a long break to enjoy other stuff myself. I appreciate the friends I made and the memories that were shared either way, whether we stayed in touch or drifted apart. ^^

And I'm the kind of nostalgic idiot that can't throw anything away, so I still have all the DS art I collected 10 years ago in a folder on my computer (I always copy the folders when I get a new PC). I just keep adding new stuff there whenever I see something I like. Looking at them brings me joy. I do hope that someone feels the same way looking at my art.

It's funny how the kids can find really surprising things scary, so it can be hard to predict. They take all the shadow stuff just fine, but the werepig and spiders terrify them. And the giants, but they make loud noises, so there is that. And they are perfectly fine with all the creepy stuff involving Charlie or Maxwell after I gave them a very simplified explanation that was basically "Charlie has a good side and evil side", and "Maxwell was the baddie, but he was actually a prisoner, so when he was released he became one of the good guys". I would cringe at a take like this if someone explained the characters to me like that, but it works for the kiddos. They can figure out the details when they grow up. xD

Steam is so evil for a compulsive-writing person like me x_x This reminds me that I should turn on family-mode that makes me unable to access the steam chat once again cause I keep spamming poor gaymime there [Who is kind of my only play companion. But I CURRENTLY can't play DS or DST anyway, because my arm is kind of........unhappy about point and click computer mouse-usage (While it let's me still type compulsively for hours! How unfair!) And then I currently struggle with my Maxwell suffering from all his body parts being quite 'dismembered' (he's a tall Maxwell but with selfdrawn sprites and uses standard Wilson animations (with some adjustments of the SG) but for *Tall* sprites, which is kind of more work then what I originally expected it to be lol [THANKS I HATE IT! But I just CAN'T endure tiny Maxwell xD] ) and in need of being put back together in spriter since I changed from his placeholder sprites to his final ones xD. And then that poor guy's mod is apparently still causing tons of bugs that I have NO idea how they occure. [Plus after somewhere in distant future getting through making his animation non-dismembered placeholders (placeholders cause they currently make a very annoying 'wobbly' twitching movement all the time) he still needs to get his speech files and SG fixed for the new update [or whatever comes afterwards] cause for now he would definitely cause the server to crash with anything new happen, due to SGWilson and his not being exactly the same. So atm I am NOT playing with him (or sadly at all) anyway x_x But that's INVOLUTARILY since I actually CRAVE for playing and am slightly "angry" at my Maxwell for causing me so much work xD

I know I could as well play with Wilson, but I mainly use Wilson in singleplayer DS more, since for me DST is basically "DS but with mods" so obviously I crave for playing my (kind of really annoying and constantly dying lol) Maxwell version more.

Sorry I strayed. I just had to justify/explain why I need to move the plans to add you in steam into some future time.....I......suppose? Unless Maxwell would decide to magically fix himself. [now THIS is what he should do! Put your stagemagician experience to some USE!]

Uhm...about challenging.......It is rather a challenge for /me/ since I get very anxious when playing /with/ someone and kind of /forget/ taking care of my very demanding character's stats / his inabilities to interact with lots of drops. xD So basically unless he gets to steal your character's telltale hearts and eat them, [or do anything else griefing that every normal character can do too] he probably will be more busy with /dying/ [he's got LOTS of self-sabotaging gameplay too] and providing you with tons of boneshards involuntarily instead of actually putting a challenge for /you/. xP

But then so far I have played him non-villanous only and have even massively toned down his insanity aura for the sake of NOT making life for a Wes terrible. xD It would definitely be fun to play him in the way I actually had in mind for him (though I won't add the superhuge insanity aura back in. He can after all still make use of Walter's storytelling mechanic to use other players to farm nightmare fuel (also very nutrious) for him.) Also I consider adding some more "annoyance" to his random-chance-of-spawning code. Cause so far that is mostly a cosmetic torture for Maxwell himself, instead of adding to sabotage /other/ characters. (unless he spawns a shadowduelist by chance)

But I can maybe let you know if I have him being roughly playable again? (I doubt this will be the case /this/ year :/ Since I get too distracted too easily currently give the mod much attention.)

Well I only had those 2 DS liking friends and one is gone (forever since I can't craft a real-life telltaleheart sadly) and the other one has probably moved away and I haven't seen him for a long time now. [But if I see him somewhere again, I might ask him if he still plays the game and if he also plays DST by now.] And the other ones are either not into gaming at all, or console gamers. Funny enough I have never considered just simply doing it the probably intended way and playing with non-real-life friends or else I probably wouldn't have been inactive in this forum / ignoring DST for so long. Turns out I am probably just not /used/ to online actually-game-gaming for too long to do so x) But I may really give it a chance in the future [Gaymime and I have actually only started to play because I was looking for someone to check if my Maxwell actually did his stage-speech animation outside of the stage client AND server side. I kind of MISS playing cause I have made a server for us that is SO bug filled for his Wes, that I have another one of my mods (ewecus and steelwool receipts based....which for some reason makes the world completely unplayable for a Wes) ONLY enable when I play solo and turn it off before he can join xD]

But it's good you still have kind of contact with them, even when in different fandoms. It WOULD be the same for me, if I had still contact to my online friends from my old deviantart and pre-deviantart times. .........with the exception that I don't /change/ fandoms, I just am in every fandom obsession I have ever picked forever simultarniously xD I just change which I am currently focus my ideas on. [Currently thanks to working on my personal very AU Maxwell mod this is DS/T AGAIN] Sadly can't say this about the other friends I had, they all disappeared when they "moved" fandoms and none of my online friends was into DS. Hmm. :/

Good! I think you should CONTINUE to collect everything inside this folder! I mainly saved my stuff inside my /brain/-hardware folders x3 Cause I don't really like looking at my stuff after making it since I always go: URGH I hate how it turned out! Oh wait I misread this, you meant the art you collected not your own. I also save this on in my BRAIN-folder but mainly because I wouldn't have the place for it, despite adoring everything x3 (and most of it I found online, but back when my access to internet was rather.....complicated and I would have needed my harddrive storage for other stuff.)

But your art (and everyone's I have seen here so far and outside of here), definitely brings ME, someone who appreciates EVERYONE'S art more then his own lol, a LOT of joy! Especially when it is headcanon based. Headcanon / AU art makes me the most happy of all.

Well your explation for the children is not /wrong/ so I'd say that's actually a good explanation to give to a fandom beginner (I call your children friends beginners since I assume they are....though are probably deeper inside the official lore then me who is stuck in AU mode xD)

No worries, the offer stays on, but there is no pressure, if you can't, or don't want to - for any reason. ^^

If you do feel like it some time later, just let me know it's you (since I'm suspicious of random friend requests when I'm not expecting one).

Sounds like your mod gets some extra horror elements at the moment. xD

These are probably among the reasons why Klei decided to just shrink him to the same proportions as everyone else for the playable model.. It's a lot of extra work (even without thinking about the need to remake every single skin item for him separately), but mad respect for taking on that challenge! And even more if you manage to make it work! Best of luck with the project!

For what it's worth, I'm really sorry for your loss. It's the sad reality in this world... Some of my friends are gone forever as well, just no one from the DS fandom, but it's sad when you know you can never do these things together again.

And I'm pretty much the same. If I get really into something, it never fully goes away. But there is only so much time and energy, so my main focus will be on one thing at a time, but my love for the other fandoms is still there in the back, just waiting for its turn in the spotlight. :D

Haha, no worries, I do collect my own art in a folder as well. I just don't enjoy looking at it as much. xD

But I guess that's just what it's like to be an artist. Both you and me find the most joy in the things that others create. Good thing there are so many amazing artists! ^^

Haha, they are beginners in everything, so yes. Literal fandom babies. But they have watched most of the animated shorts and remember a shocking amount of details from them. Which was evident when I had only showed the animations to the oldest child, and then the next time they were here, the middle child came to ask me to show her "the episode where [insert a very accurate and detailed description of the events in the animated short] happened". She sounded like she was describing something she'd seen already, so the oldest must have done a really good job telling her all about it. Also, they all adore Charlie and think Maxwell is cool, so I think I've done my job right. xD

And once again, nothing wrong with AUs! Even Klei creates AUs with the various skin sets, and the fandom on Tumblr is currently running wild with the "pirate AU" thanks to the new Swashbuckler skins for Wilson and Maxwell. If an alternate universe brings you more joy, go for it! :wilson_flower:

(the steam name I currently use simply is "Maxwell" because DST uses usernames for some reason and I got sick of "something-that-isn't-Maxwell" died of sheniganis when I played with my Maxwell x3 And then I thought: Well IF I ever want to interact with the workshop or the community I should make it in a way that fixes both the annoying DST uses random name and my constantly-changing-usernames issue, so I decided simply writing Maxwell inside my steam name and have my mod stuff / my forum username being NPCMaxwell was probably the best choice. Wait now I think about it, I will just add you so I don't forget.)

(Funny enough I just realized that custom villainous Maxwell stealing and being able to eat telltale hearts only makes sense gameplay wise when he is on the same main island as a /group/ of survivors since I doubt anyone would craft a telltale heart when the only one you could use it on is actively trying to make your life miserable x3 [Though that would make it even more funny to leave Maxwell the choice of 'having a heart' and reviving you with it or just go: 'nevermind, I will destroy your chance of survivel for the sake of refilling my own stats'] Seems I am so unprepared for actually playing WITH someone that I forgot nobody will actually probably craft a telltale heart in this 'pvp'-similar scenario in the first place when being 2 players only.)

Fair enough! xD

And thanks for adding me!  :wilson_flower:

Haha, that certainly sounds like something very situational and a bit too easy for other players to avoid - unless other resurrection methods are removed from the equation and there really are more players on the board... But I'm sure you'll figure out how to deal with that challenge sooner or later. You have some clever ideas after all. ^^

On another note, here is a little doodle that only you will understand:

I'M DEAD (And embarassed from understanding this way too much xD) This is funny enough exactly what I imagine each time my tall Maxwell (or any Maxwell actually) using the bushhat! Those long legs just can't stay hidden!

I meant to post this yesterday for the Starvetober day 6, but I was simply too tired and recovering from a trip (still am).

The prompt was cosplay, and I swear this is relevant - even though only one person understands it, for now. xD

He is much too tall for the bush hat! xD

I'm glad you found it amusing! :wilson_laugh:

My entry for the DST community contest on Tumblr:

I have way too many favorite quotes so I just picked one of them, because I adore the relationship between these two. I guess Winona just sees Maxwell as "her sister’s silly boyfriend" no matter what - even if he were to attack, he’s going to get the “little bro” treatment. x’D

“Don’t make me noogie you”

And a couple of artworks I've made for the art streams earlier:
