I've been peeking at the brains and stategraphs for the beefalo and it occurred to me that it would probably be very simple to code a little mod tool that goes through every state animation sequentially without the usual long intervals and listen-for functions, maybe even slowing down the frames, so it's easier to spot every possible sprite being used.

What do you say, @simplex? Could you work your magic on this if you find the time?

 

Speaking of which, if i can get a breather tomorrow, i'm dying to dig into the tex-map and test this ingame, @MilleniumCount. First one rolling up the sleeves should post a warning here, with a little luck we might be able to work on it together ;)

 

Also very anxious to hear what the rest of you guys think of the latest sketch...

Should we go with it? Any ideas to add ideawiz @Symage?

Guess with a new update AND a new forum, everyone must be pretty involved in other stuff atm.

 

Would really like to see this thread moved up to the Mods section as soon as @Lord_Battal sees fit. Off-topic posts not showing on the New Content log may be damaging our chances for more suggestions and contributions.

Busy day at work today, just managed to login now.

I see you've been having fun with the texs already, Millenium! Nice! :D

In a couple of hours i might be able to pick up where you left it.

Some things worrying me there in terms of sprite alignment, the design will very likely need to be tweeked a bit to make that task easier...

The claws and bottom of the head need a little time on the drawing-board.

Let's hope it doesn't ruin that cartoon simplicity i'm loving.

But names aside, how do you like Lou's new look?

 

Either way, after a lot of hours texturing, this came out very crappy.

Will take a great deal more to make it work.

[Replace "atlas-0.tex" inside the "beefalo_build.zip" in "Dont StarveDataAnim" (backup first, of course)]

Don't know what's going on with the youtube upload. Original file is the same as the previous videos, and it played alright a few times, but now i can only see it at 144k quality for some weird reason...

Sorry about my lack of replying guys. I've been kinda troubled by the new forums, but now that I've managed for it to stop burning my eyes and for code syntax highlighting to look nice, I feel I can actually work in it again. And I didn't receive @lifemare's mentions. I think I hadn't enabled them at the time yet.

I tried pushing some more the idea of using the Spider Queen as a base. I asked Ipsquiggle if he had any ideas on how to offset the animation, and based on his suggestion I managed to have it touch the ground. However, since I had to displace it by too much, this created an issue: depth testing got waaay off, meaning that when the Snail King walked over something (say, a sapling, grass or seed) that thing appeared to be over the snail king for some time before getting obscured. It might be possible to work around that, but I'm not sure. And even if it is, I think the best we could hope is for it to look "ok" superficially. So I think the new Beefalo-based approach is truly better. And I like the new sketches!

 

 

There will still be an issue of hovering (though slighter than the spider) from deleting the unnecessary hoof sprites. But i'm confident @simplex will figure a workaround for that ;)

Yes. The technique I learned from trying to solve the Spider Queen issue would handle this well. As long as the animation offsetting is small, it will work smoothly.

I can. I wrote a tool for tehMugwump's Test Tools mod that gathered the animation banks and builds for all the prefabs in the game. It could be adapted to fetch all animations.

 

Since we are thinking about adding the one or the other ''Big Guy'', may I throw this fella into the pot?

That would be awesome! I'd love to code this little guy. And I was really looking forward to working with the Spider Queen anims, anyway :razz:.

Though it would be another mod, of course. Maybe we should found a new modding team. Name suggestions, anyone? xD

Agreed. I think snail king, Snail King, snailking or however you may choose to spell it (I've been inconsistent on that, but from now on I'll stick with "snailking") should remain the "internal name" (and be used for development talk). But we need to decide on the "external name". Personally, I don't think Lou Carcolh quite fits into the game, it's too French. Edited by simplex

I wasn't planning on even mentioning you again in the next couple days so you could have a breather lol. Very happy to see you free some time for this again!

That test tool will be very welcome. I probably won't have time tomorrow to fix the texture problems with the latest atlas, which is the priority right now, so don't bother rushing that just yet, it can wait till the weekend i'm sure.

Anyway, 5am here and i was just about to crash when i saw your comments - sorry for the telegram, i'm off to Kadath

This looks nice already. Of course there is still much work to do but that is the case everytime.
