I find brute force searching the caves tends to waste a lot of time, you can get a really good idea of the caves shape by jumping in as many sinkholes as you can which can give you an idea of where the mud biome even has space to put the ruins.

If you know where green blue and red are there is three directions where you automatically have a strong hint that the ruins probably aren't here chief. If you find blue you can even pre-stockpile thulecite for your ruins dive if you aren't in a rush. Same goes for fumarole biome, just hitting the caves and running around is not the greatest gameplay but since each sinkhole drops you off fairly close to the end of a caves branch, you can hit a bunch of sinkholes and get an idea of where not to go/where the useless space is.

The near sinkhole spaces would be fun for a cave base but the main random boss encounter in the caves is probably the most destructive to base structures in the game, so you aren't going to base near the sinkholes, so a lot of these areas are kinda wasted space with how little is in them in the way of setpieces and the like.

The Wiki is outdated, my most recent Tentapillar spawn was in the Furmarole biome so I would say to go check there.

This is a thread about the ruins, not atrium.

But also on that note, the wiki is perfectly up to date. You can find this on the tentapillar page which directs you to more info about the setpiece itself and where it can spawn!
