as title says. I am unsure if this was suggested or not, but case study of seeing 99% of all noobs that try to play this game firstly struggle with controls. Give some kind of animations like in ONI for controls and explanation to the Scrapbook, as in sections that provide info and 'points of interests' being suggested best to be examined to 'explore their mysteries and whatever you may find when you interact with that' kinda hint. Hint about insight as well, as a source of power you accumulate overtime (or in future whenever it has quests or something)

Pause option needs to be known as well, for if there's afking they wanna do it's prolly recommended. Need to inform of 'savefiles' to rollback within the in server options if wanting to undo failings.

Any slight nudges and finger pushes I think would benefit those that just play with themselves or their friends instead of wanting to wiki and youtube about everything, at least, more smaller nudges for noob players to feel at fault when it's their bad but give enough understanding on how to move around and do things.

This should be part of scrapbook but also new info you get immediately. General information everyone should know before starting their adventure. Nothing about resources or any showing of creatures or spoilers. Just target dummies, characters, movement, character and server controls, power increases and hints towards the hints.

Gotta be mindful to make it not too intimidating for the new people too, make the tutorial too dense and it already feels like a turnoff.

Fighting FuelWeaver on xbox is a nightmare, not just xbox though.. any console that isn’t using “mods” You can not ever possibly know that each of the little bugs he eats heals 400hp at a time, in fact you have no idea how much health it has or how much damage your even doing to it. My entire experience fighting bosses in DST have exclusively been: Bring more Armor and Healing items then one should ever reasonably need, and hit it until it’s Dead.

i introduced a friend to the game and i think we made it through a year before i realized they didnt know the attack hotkey... maybe that's more of a wendy problem than a controls problem, but either way it's extremely unfriendly to newcomers.

ya but you need the right one and im guessing a lot of people ignore them

im also surprised about how many people dont check the controls for games that dont give them to you in tutorials

I think having it in character select would be nice. theres a lot of space at the bottom(next to discconect) so having an icon or just "controls" written down would work nicely.

that is fair, a lot of people don't really think about settings as a general thing, but, to be fair a lot of people dont really play more than one or two games a year so i am not super surprised anymore.

I feel like I've had a lot of moments when introducing the game to friends where they've realized "oh, I can do this with a key? I don't have to click it manually?" and it's an instant fix for a lot of the things they found tedious, like fighting or picking items up off the ground. Even just a little controls screen on start-up would help, I think. (The concept of putting the controls on the character select screen that was suggested prior in this thread is also really nice.)

why dont people check the controls settings when they start a new game? it will help them alot

Some basic and highly HIGHLY important things need to be explained more clearly to the player with a Video Demonstration, Willows entire skill tree/rework needs its own video Tutorial.. all Klei would need to do is make a short clip of a player walking towards bee with a spear then switching to her lighter & lighting the Bee on fire with her lighter then switching back to the spear to kill said on fire bee (and save lighter durability in the process) after it’s dead switch BACK to equipping the lighter and absorb the flame to collect the “ember” to use for magic fire spells.

a five second video can explain that.

and with DST releasing on mobile devices THIS MONTH, these short tutorial how to videos may actually be a great investment.

The tool tip swaps twice on tips often and not everyone will read through those in general. They're good as 'extra' tips, but a direct approach would bring more value.

fair. you are not wrong but it does still ease the pressure to turn them on and receive basic game-play information

I think since Don't Starve has point-and-click controls, a lot of people don't realize that these hotkeys exist in the first place. This might only be my experience when running into people on this game, but due to the cute art style + the fact it's easy to run on basically any laptop or PC, it also tends to attract a lot of people who are more casual about gaming and might not be used to adjusting the controls. (Saying this as someone in the boat of "I have a laptop that can't run a lot of games and I tend to be pretty casual about them"!)

For any reason, I think it's nice to have a reminder of both the controls and the fact you can adjust them to increase accessibility. Any accessibility is good accessibility :wilson_flower:

ya its really common to play with people or watch streamers who dont know about f&space or that ctrl changes what you can attack. they at least normally find out about q&e rotating the camera by accident

Hadnt thought of this before but with controllers what options you have are more obvious as they just show when you're near something, so maybe they could do something like that for pc as a one time popup when you join worlds, with something in settings to let you change it to appear all the time or never

If they go down that route i think they'd need to add a bit more then space, f and ctrl+f. like, show how to chat when someone sends a message, once they get a certain ammount of an any item or interact with a chest/ice box show let them know how to split a stack

Not everyone is a 'gamer' also not everyone is gonna be checking, instead, hoping for a lil push from the game itself to provide the basic enough info of how to do things.

PC players have “hot keys” Console players have “Button Binding” and button binding in its current form is the very last thing from “good accessibility”

At this point I don’t even complain that much about it in these forums anymore because I know I’ll just be flagged for off-topic rambling and the cry’s for a fix falls on deaf ears of developers who genuinely seem not to care.

Wortox should NOT still be accidentally Soul hopping while trying to interact with a lantern that’s placed on the ground. 😂
