The new Charleston skin is a beautiful idea, but i think the ingame sprite fails a bit at showing the vibe of the portrait, so if i could make a suggestion perhaps a couple small changes could be made? i know klei doesn't frequently change skins after release, but i think this skin would look much better with the same face that GoH and Roseate Winona skins have, as well as more definition to the dress frills and a fix for the shoes not properly hiding the socks from the skin's base model? pretty please? I even made a small mockup of the changes with my subpar editing skillsimage.png.25ced9313dddfe8fab05b4b008b58878.png

should have probably posted the actual portrait for those who haven't seen it

I just think the happy Winona face matches better with the vibe, she's at a party and is going to dance, let her be happy and not grumpy
also making the frills (or whatever those red things are called, im not sure) less uniform and stick out a bit helps them look like frills and not like she has red rope tied around her

I don't get the other comments, this is the most normal and sane request I've seen on the forums in a while.
Anyhow, ditto. I'd love to see some more frills/fluff added to the feathers of the dress. Didn't realize they were loose till I saw the portrait. The smile would be cute, too!

Yeah, pretty reasonable imo. The same thing happened when Wheeler was released in Hamlet. People asked Klei to change her old sprite from a frown to a smile in order to better reflect her portrait and quotes and they listened! I feel like this change is just as likely.

requests to make female/fem characters smile is prolific and pervasive with no concern to whether or not it makes sense for the character. also the socks are going to be changed. a dev already marked it as fixed for the next hotfix

but... she's at a party... the other skins where she was at a party (Guest of Honor) has her smiling so it's not unreasonable to think she could smile at a party i think? and she's smiling in the portrait so i thought the intention for the skin was that it was a happy skin

i cant elaborate any further than just saying exactly what i said. there is a pervasive cultural habit of people asking for female/fem chars to smile when they are given neutral or serious expressions. it is just something that happens in forums for longer than i have been online and has been happening irl for longer than i have been alive to the point where in the places i have lived there has always been some variation of it. even klei has experienced this kind of request in the past

or do you mean the socks? someone posted the socks things in the bug section and a mod has marked it as fixed which means the next hotfix will have the socks removed

the skin is a confident smirk but i can understand it being a party-dress would denote a happy occasion if reading faces is not one's strong-suit but the smile suggested is not the smile in the portrait and is blank and lacking much of winona's personality(and is also just the goh head with a different flower). i cant say there was any ill intent behind the request since i am not you but all the same it is still super uncomfortable  and feels like the opposite of what someone who is invested in winona would like(that is more of her distinct personality and closer fidelity to the portrait)

as for the goh set? they also had distinctly different portrait to skin designs with the skin being much more striking than the face she ended up with in her sprites

I can't say I feel that way at all. Does it help that I'm fem and also making the same request?
I think she'd be better smiling in this skin because... its fitting for her personality. Its shown to be the artists intent if we're going off her portrait, and Winona does enjoy parties to some extent. I think automatically seeing a request as simple as this and putting it into the pervasive box is a bit much.

That aside the request was politely worded and there's been -plenty- of other examples of them making simple face changes for all sorts of characters. Winona's had some in the past, Wilson and Webber have had some for their party skins too when people pointed out their expressions not matching their intended looks. I'm not seeing ill-intent anywhere.

it's ok to have a different feeling about it than i do. there is nothing to say people have to have the same opinions about stuff. do please know though that i did give it some thought before i decided to make my initial comment. it was not automatic so much as a growing thought that the proposed change felt rather wrong for the suggested issue

i suppose maybe a picture would work better to convey my feelings on the matter? the picture on the left is the proposed one, the picture on the right is styled after the portrait specifically. they are not very different but you should be able to see that they do not have the same vibe at all

im sorry but if i saw a face like this on a skin it would immediately go into my "never weave or equip EVER" collection, with the GoH face she looks happy (or at least not pissed) to be at a party, with your face she looks like she's going to kill me in a dark alley

I do mean the smile, she already has several other skins in which she smiles so I don't think it would be much of an issue. you make it sound like it would be problematic, if anything I'd just say Klei won't change it simply because they don't have to so they won't

if i am correct i do believe it is four out of about twentyish? she has a neutral face in most of the ones i've seen(i have multiple friends who play winona so i have seen a lot of them over the years), i know goh and triumphant have a smile though i am pretty sure the triumphant is more of a sneer since it is the "evil" skin set(as an aside the whole harajuku rockn' roller look is quite dashing on her)

GoH, Roseate and Merrymaker use her smiling face (they also all have softer, more rounded eyebrows)

I don't want to get myself back in a habit of forum arguments but yeah I'd like to back up gaymime here, this is weird. "You should smile more" is a misogynistic comment that many women receive frequently, especially those who don't present stereotypically feminine, and I'm really not a fan of it being thinly veiled as aesthetic criticism towards the one butch woman in the game. Let her resting face look annoyed, that's true of 17 out of her 21 skins. It's just how she looks and is a large part of what pulls me towards Winona aesthetically, as someone who also has a resting face that "looks like I'm going to kill you in a back alley."

i find it so odd that people are this focused on the smile and are completely ignoring the fact that i also changed the dress and proposed (a soon to be added) fix for her socks sticking out of her clearly sock-less shoes, but yeah it's actually just misogyny and i hate women for wanting Winona's party-loving personality to be reflected in her party themed Charleston dancing flapper skin

I really do feel like it isnt that deep with the whole smile in this situation. Yes there has been a history with women being told to smile more however I don't think it is at all applied here or implied. Especially since Winona has a good handful of skins of her smiling already, which are skins where she is dressed formerly for events/parties. The request isnt coming from any malice or hate.
