As of now, these oceans mobs only have a chance of spawning near fish schools and this makes them pretty rare encounters unless the player goes out of their way to fish at sea. You can easily do all required ocean tasks without even seeing 1 or more of them.

Additionally, this means there is no good way to find them when the player might want to. If you're running out of light bulbs or you want to craft the strident trident or you just want a ton of meat, there is nowhere in the ocean the player can go and know they will be there.

I think giving these mobs their own unique spawners, similar to the homes for pigs and bunnymen and the palaces for ballphins in shipwrecked, in addition to the way they spawn now would alleviate these issues. It would make the ocean feel more populated, give more variety to its biomes and potentially be something the player could craft for ocean bases or just live near for regular bases.

That would be great ! Yeah I often result in putting fish shoals and all three of these creatures on More on my world settings too, having some spots on the map where these creatures would be more regular would create for amazing spots to pass by, ooh how I would love an area with many Rockjaws furrowing the waters together...

They're open-water sea creatures, they swim around in the watery nothingness below the surface, and we only see them because they get curious about our boat and want to check it out. I think it'd feel really video game-y and boring if they were to additionally spawn from a static spot on the map, because these creatures don't work like that: they spend their lives swimming around the ocean, not staying still wandering in one spot forever. It makes them feel real! They feel like animals in a way that no other mob does, especially not ones like Pigmen who spend their entire lives wandering in the vicinity of a house in one specific spot of the map forever.

That being said, if you're having trouble finding Gnarwails in particular, and aren't willing to spend more time on the ocean for them to spawn ambiently, just throw some fish food at a few ocean trawlers. They're cartoonishly efficient for spawning Gnarwails, I have several chests full of bundles of Gnarwail horns in my current world because they keep spawning and interrupting my fish farming.

Actually it would be even more realistic if they had regular spots we would find them and in greater numbers. Animals like whales, shark and even squids have sites they return to consistently years after years... they aggregate in their preferred feeding grounds and migrate between specifically targeted area to stay to and... :eagerness: yeah I won't do a full marine biology class !

So including localized spawners would complement those mobs perfectly I'd say if we're to take it closer from reality. Them being only random encounters with fish shoals spawns is what has encouraged me to increase their frequency settings like few others (which has gotten to be a popular thing among players...), despite I do already so much sailing and fishing, the ocean default settings were too bare for me, it'd just be great getting to see them without necessarily having to be tied to fish spawns, but also some exploration.

Given that I would most certainly love that they get spawners added on top, which I sure hope to be more interesting than all too basic. Maybe considering making a pair of spawners for each of the mobs and they would rotate between them each 2 seasons, different for each of them. Would be so cool to arrive there and see all those animals around, don't you think ? Makes for some new places to mark on the map in that massive ocean we have.

I just want Klei to hire whoever created the shipwrecked DLC to help them design boating & ocean content for DST.

Like SW was so fun because it had those under the water mob spawners, and interesting islands to sail to and explore.

I sometimes join worlds that have no caves and it would be pretty cool to be able to search for Skkitersquids to make a lantern and recharge it consistently. Now it's a matter of crafting a torch every night or making fireflies go extinct, bad business.

I remember there was a bug that all Skittersquids used to move toward a single point on the map, there was the “Skittersquid's Paradise” where every Skittersquid that had ever spawned in world.

It was a really cool bug, so I think it would be a good idea to keep the current despawn and place a Skittersquid spawner at their final destination.
