Thoughts on Update Schedule Changes

To be fair, skill trees are character updates, which means that only people who play the affected characters are actually receiving an update. To everyone else it's a nothing-burger that took 3+ months of waiting since the last update

Why lock yourself to not playing the full cast of characters? If a character gets updated, anyone can try out the changes (provided they own the character). Many characters play very differently from one another so by trying another character you can get a lot more novelty out of the game.

God, I hope the Funny Gambling Clown didn't eat one of the spots for a major update this year. I get that the crossover had effort put into it and everything, but it's ultimately one entirely optional thing that most players are probably gonna ignore once the hype dies down, and it involves playing poker. I don't even know how to play poker, nor do I want to learn, and I'm sure I'm not the only one who feels that way.

Like, if James Balatro counts as a "major update", that means we could've gotten some kind of cave biome update instead of him, or more stuff to finish off the lunar side of the rifts, or perhaps Warly, Wickerbottom, and/or Webber's skill trees.

I mean it isn't literally playing poker... It is a game with a poker theme.

Surely a poker theme isn't that bad?

Probably because they don't find the character fun, or don't like their design.

I don't think people really need a reason to not play a character, tbh. Like... I wouldn't be surprised if most people who play stuff like Marvel Rivals played with like... 5 to 10 characters at most.

Like, personally speaking, I don't have any interest in ever playing with Wolfgang, Maxwell, Warly, Wanda, Wortox, Walter, Webber, Winona and Wurt. Like... I just don't care about any of them, and I don't think skill trees for the ones that don't already have it would change that.

OTOH, some characters like Wickerbotton and WX-78 I currently have no interest in playing, but I find their concepts interesting, so I might try them out after a Skill Tree.

This is a really uncurious way to approach a game that's well known for its cast of characters. To be clear, out of all the characters that have received a skill tree, I was only an active player of Wigfrid prior to the skill tree, and now I play over half of the characters who have received skill trees. As someone who didn't previously like to play the affect characters of a skill tree update, I just... can? I can just click them in the menu now. I can try them because they have new stuff. Why would you ignore new content because it changes a character that you were previously uninterested, in to be more interesting and appeal to more players?

I guess, but I still desperately want to be able to turn this thing off so it's not in my worlds.

Because dst is a game where reaching endgame can take dozens of irl days?

If I already have a 100+ days -old world with Wanda, I'm not going to just drop it to try out Wendy or some other character. I enjoy playing a world to a completion, not for one in-game year, then starting a new world with a different character, like if dst was some sort of tiktok-like short form content

Calling switching characters to try something new tiktok-like short form content is crazy

Unlocking the insight every time they update a character is annoying. Waiting 9 hours to get a character ready to play is not fun or interactive. if I didn't like a character before, I'm not going to spend 9 hours to make them a little more playable when there are other characters I enjoy.

I disagree on this front as someone who prefers to manually unlock the insight right away compared to maxing it via the console or AFKing for the points. You do not need all 15 insight to make a character “ready to play”. You get insight points considerably quickly “early” into the tree, and even 4-5 skills can allow for a pretty noticeable experience early on while still having something to look forward to with the affinities and the like.

If it was back when you needed to ~20 hours to get all 15 points in addition to the initial ones being much slower then I would agree more, but the changes to streamline the insight gain feel much more fluid IMO.

Eh, if you like the characters loop, and you only play on one system for sure. It's not worth it if you don't like the character. For the players that only likes 1/3rd of the characters, allot of the updates add nothing.

This is a major issue with DST's Live Service model. DST in its current state can be argued to be completely fine, but since the expectation is that the game is being updated frequently with new content when it isn't met the game completely loses momentum. The game gets a lot more boring to people way quicker when the expectation is that there will constantly be something different added constantly, and it results in posts like this where since the game isn't receiving constant updates and slowing down it is being tied directly into the enjoyment of the game itself.
