It should cost an Iridescent Gem instead of a Purple Gem.

After using the Celestial Portal, it will go on a 20 day cooldown for the person who used it.

 

The point of the Celestial Portal is to give an option to change a character for people who got bored of the character they were playing.

Implementing the cooldown and the cost would make it actually fulfill this purpose, instead of being a machine to use other characters’ perks for a moment and then switch back.

Considering that the Iridescent Gem is quite expensive, is directly connected to the moon, and is so powerful that it feeds the archives, it makes sense, but considering that there are 2 in the archive, we are in a difficult position. Alternatives ? Yellow, Orange Gem. Does the moon Idol fall off the crab king?(he's the only moon boss. before Moon Champion and moon rifts) I wouldn't mind if the idol was crafted from a staff with an Iridescent Gem, since you wouldn't be limited to artificial periodes, but to the lunar cycle (+ you would have to launch a mini event with a lunar platform) It would make you feel more like the moon powers would allow you to change your character. I would also leave the idols purple gem, BUT only so that the character could change the skill tree. No more, no less

this would make wilson the best character as he would have the easiest time not playing wilson

Nah, celestial portal is great for solo players, iridescent gem and cooldown would add unnecessary tedium to megabasers.

Also celestial portal now serves a side purpose of allowing you to try different skill load outs for the same character.

Literally no good would come from nerfing it.

You didn't really state why it needs nerfed to begin with? Because it fulfills it's purpose fantastically atm so I don't understand why you think it doesn't.

How do you know what "the point" is exactly? Please realize that "the portal is supposed to be used this way and not this other way" is a narrative that you made up for yourself.

The point of the celestial portal is to exchange moon idols to go back into the login screen. It's limited by the availability of moon idols and nothing else. If you think a gameworld should only ever be played by one character then that's another of those narratives. If you think people shouldn't be able to rearrange insight points, another made up narrative. These are restrictions you want on yourself voluntarily. Challenge runs so to speak.

The portal is there because very clearly the game gives us the ability to swap characters. It does so in a very stock standard gameplay way. Collect ressources, build something and use it for it's intended purpose. And as has been repeated a million times already: character swapping has always been part of the DS experience.

If you can't stop swapping characters even though that takes the enjoyment out of the game for yourself ask the community for a mod that restricts it in the ways you like.

We don't play with each other. I actually play mostly alone nower days. Stop trying to police how I play the game. You are not in it.

To be fair, moonstones and purple Gem Gems are very cheap resources, only a newbie who hasn't been in the game yet won't agree with this. In a single player game, they lost the world when changing characters and almost all their resources.

 

 

 

*I think in DS you can't remember a character. You can change the world only by taking a limited amount of resources with you. But maybe I forgot because I played a long time ago.*

I'm aware how easy it is to make lots of moon idols. I'm not saying "look the portal is very restrictive already, don't make it worse!" I'm saying using the portal freely is part of the normal DST experience.

In single player you merge your worlds and then you world hop in one of the worlds you aren't building in losing absolutely nothing and taking a bunch of bundling wraps with you so you can instantly go back to your actual base world. This is commonly used to renew rare ressources like the ruins or volcano or to you know swap characters. My favourite streamer once put it this way: "if you think it's hard to swap characters in DS then you haven't played the game to its full potential."

You go back to the character selection screen just like in DST. 

You keep your inventory (including Krampus Sack and Bundling Wraps not including certain items like the Eyebone) and all your unlocked crafting recipes.

No! That's a terrible idea. Changing perks into a skill tree would become so annoying that no one would do it.

This opens up a good question, does Klei has any way to track the "perk" usage among skill trees?

Frankly the portal is a great litmus test for how boring a character is. If a character's entire playstyle can be encapsulated with a brief switch to them, that character is almost certainly far too two-dimensional and could stand to be improved. The "portal issue" is a symptom, not an actual problem.

I do want more uses for iridescent gems though.

If the moon idol allowed you to change characters to the same character (i.e. you would get the starting items after changing), and the iridescent gem idol allowed you to change to another character and no cooldown was added, then it would be acceptable.
I would probably complain about it at first, but I would get used to it after a while.

no we MUST add a cooldown, get the player used to other characters and not just sticking to their "mains". this way players can actually have an understanding of said characters, not just spouting BS.

I have missed the point completely, explain it to me.

Because no one is forcing you to swap to a character for 2mins then swap back.

If I swap to wormwood to spam out living logs/bramble husks I tend to play him for a season before swapping back to whoever. I would prefer not to be forced to wait a full 20days everytime. Purple gems are a good early game restriction to stop excessive swapping.

 I can say is that if you don't do it, it doesn't mean that others don't do it. People do just that, they take wormwood and make Living Log, armor, and then they change back to their character

That's great? Characters like wormwood are the perfect example of what a character should be. Wormwood has powerful swap abilities (plant crafting, bramble husk and living log spam) this gives people who have "mains" and are stubborn a reason to swap to Wormwood.

But Wormwood also has powerful enough abilities to make you want to stay as him (brambleshade armour, moonshroom sleep clouds, bloom speed boost) 

Swap abilities can bait people into playing a character they might never try. 

Unpopular opinion but every character should have, decent to good, swap abilities. Big reason i don't play Wanda much is because she adds nothing to the global "perk soup" or there is nothing i can get from swapping quickly to her that I can't get from swapping to Wolfgang for boss fights or woodie/walter for quick exploration of the world.

So what? Why does that bother you? 

One of my favourite streamers used to swap to Walter and craft a bunch of Pinetree Pioneer Hats with the Pine Leader skin. Then swap back to whomever they were playing at the time. Afterwards they would equip the hat and do things around their base, build a bunch of stuff, farm some giant crops, you name it. I asked them why they were doing it, since the hat does nothing for anyone who isn't Walter.The answer? They didn't enjoy Walter's gameplay at all so they didn't play him but they really liked how that particular skin looked and so they wore it when they didn't care about their headslot item.

Do you think Walter was upset and needed to be rescued from this heavy abuse?
Do you think this streamer with 10.000 hours of playing DST and even more in DS with 6000 days old hardcore megabases yet capable of killing every boss in the first year just didn't know how to play Walter properly?

And most importantly do you think he would have started playing Walter more if only there was a big ass restrictive cooldown on the celestial portal?

None of those things. The only thing that would happen is that somebody's fun of liking a certain skin (that he payed for!) would be taken out of the game.
