theMCwolf
With Woby’s new rework coming with Walter’s skill tree update, and just hutch in general, chester feels very underwhelming Hutch’s transformations can be triggered at any time, while chester’s can only happen on a full moon and since hutch uses up items instead of having a permanent transformation, if hutch dies, you can recover any items still in use the transformations also feel more powerful with hutch, 40/min sanity aura is NOTHING to sneeze at, neither is having thorns with such high health Woby has always been a better version of chester in the early game, that walters get instantly, but now that she will be able to deliver items across the map, can’t be attacked and can have a portable drying rack, as well as her monster form, woby just outshines chester in every way Link to comment https://forums.kleientertainment.com/forums/topic/164071-does-chester-feel-underwhelming/ Share on other sites
Auth
Hutch's transformations require 2/9 slots to be spent in order to be active. The music box one in particular, while good for sanity, only lasts 3 minutes- this means you need to sacrifice one of your own inventory's slots to carry the one-man-band around if you don't want to use it at the moment or to keep the crafting materials for it in your inventory to keep replenishing it- otherwise, you could be spending it's durability at times where you don't need to. Unlike the thorns one, I don't think you'll be commonly coming across pig skin to spend on bands just from foraging in the caves, either. Otto's alternate forms are straight upgrades that have a one-time cost. Shadow is quite cheap, & even makes him tied to Maxwell's shadow storage. Additionally, most players spend more time on the surface than the caves- availability is something worth considering when comparing him to Hutch. Woby having more perks for skill point investment as well as being entirely locked behind playing Walter seems fine. Again, their upsides are countered by the availability. Just out of curiosity though, what would you add to spice him up? I think Chester is great already. But I also play Maxwell so. I guess I'm biased. Cheggf
Chester requires the full moon and Hutch doesn't because Hutch's transformations suck while Chester's are incredibly powerful. Chester either doubles the duration your food can last inside him in addition to essentially removing the mechanics from Summer, or goes from 9 inventory slots to 12. Hutch's transformations do the opposite of increase his inventory size, they reduce it from 9 to 7. One of them is almost entirely worthless, all it does is break a One Man Band in 3 minutes in exchange for a moderate sanity aura. Sanity is a million times easier to obtain in basically any other way than making a bunch of One Man Bands that you're carrying around to keep putting in him. His other transformation is a bit better since it does a small amount of damage to anything that attacks him, but in most situations that isn't nearly as helpful as having 70% more capacity or having 30% more capacity which also halves the spoilage rate of items inside and also entirely negates Summer. Yeah I don't really know how other than maybe a speed buff, the thing about him is that he draws agro from everywhere whenever I go through the forests with him which can be a problem when I'm just trying to explore, but other than that I would probably add a way to recover the stuff you used to buff him up maybe? For example, he would drop half of the gems used to buff him to ice box chester, I might be biased with my playstyle though, since I always stay relatively close to my base so I usually have access to an icebox Link to comment https://forums.kleientertainment.com/forums/topic/164071-does-chester-feel-underwhelming/#findComment-1797432 Share on other sites

Maybe if it was a permanent transformation like Chester gets it'd be alright, but you need to give it a OMB every 3 minutes. You're going through a lot of pigskin, nightmare fuel, and gold nuggets while requiring that you also hold still not accomplishing anything since he's bad at following you and the aura quickly falls off. Since you're using so much gold and nightmare fuel already, why not use a nightmare amulet? That's going to last several times longer and give you way more sanity in addition to giving you a bunch of nightmare fuel instead of draining a bunch of nightmare You clearly know how to fight nightmare creatures do since you're going through so much nightmare fuel to keep Hutch in his music box form. Or, since you're already underground, why not just eat mushrooms? There's a million everywhere and a single green one will give almost 30 seconds of sanity with a blue one being almost as good, both without needing to AFK at Hutch, carry around a bunch of OMBs, or break a bunch of OMBs. Or you can just sleep in a tent/lean-to, they give 50% more sanity per minute and can be pre-crafted so you don't need to sacrifice a ton of inventory slots for them. I've never actually seen anyone ever turn Hutch into his music box form. It's not a good form. The thing it's best at is roleplay or something since it's fun to see his new appearance and the song he plays. The sanity benefit is not very helpful, especially when compared to other forms of restoration.
