Please consider fixing/upgrading/reworking Wilson's skill tree.

I suppose the regret I had was not coming to this forum when his skill tree was in beta... :wilson_tranquil: just look at the difference between Wendy players and Wilson players. The former had been very vocal on voicing their thoughts about what would suit Wendy.

Meanwhile, Wilson players 'work' on the basis "It's good enough." And back then, it really was 'good enough', because everyone thought it would be the end of character updates. The original DS Wilson was still in the game, but now you can customize him via skill points. That was different compared to other characters. Everyone else had their kits changed in DST via their reworks.

The first thing I ever said in this forum was whether Wilson could have a beard shield, and while not many engaged with the post, they still made fun of it, saying 'it's not befitting his playstyle'. What sort of playstyle did he even have? He only had his beard that acts both as an upside and a downside.

People had thought after Wilson's 'update', it meant Klei could finally focus on the lore contents and such.

Well look how badly that backfired onto us.

People on Klei's Discord server practically agreed on how horrible the whole torch tree was, and suggested that it should at least extend to other light sources. And of course I agreed with them. It's not like he's JUST depicted with a torch - he used other items too - just that the torch is the most 'common' thing.

Again, the real problem was how much Klei extended those filler perks. No one ever wants a 3-tier branch that just focused on ONE SINGLE PERK. And yet Klei did it anyway, even present in others' skill trees to such extremes (especially Wolfgang).

I may hate on the torch toss, but I still could acknowledge some who do like it, so I retained such thing in my skill tree concept. Such small perk shouldn't even take that much points to get to in the first place.

Preach.

I stand with you - it's completely reasonable for everyone to want their favorite characters to become more engaging. However, it's saddening and perplexing that some people are actively trying to prevent this. I've heard many arguments like "Wilson should remain a blank slate", but why? To those who think this way, I just want to say: You can simply choose not to engage with the skill tree. The existence of options shouldn't limit others' ability to enjoy deeper customization.

Considering how little lore we got, it's more than reasonable to see at least some of them remaining connected via gameplay-wise. Back then, Wigfrid's "The Performance Artist" title was just in the name. Now? She actually had perks relating to her old career while also staying as the Valkyrie warrior she loved.

It's just... I don't even know what to think, man. I might as well be delusional right now, haha.

Side note for torch toss: I find it rather stupid that you still gotta hold the torch to throw it. Also the distance to throw the torch is well, rather too short. Like really, only 8 wall tiles?

I may talk smack about the abandoned Pocket Edition port often but the one thing it did rather well was that you can ignite things WITHOUT the torch ever leaving the inventory slot. You can long-press the torch while near an item and then boom, it lights up. And of course, no wasted torch durability via holding to burn said item.

Please, please, please do consider to improve Wilson's skill tree, Klei. Don't you ever feel sad to know that your supposed mascot got ridiculed by practically everyone else? Being mocked for being 'dumb' and 'a bad scientist' despite the various creations he had made?

I really like playing Wilson because of the character's lore, but every time I play and see the other characters with their new skills I feel very behind. That's why I put so much detail into conceptualizing a new skill tree. And I'm happy to find other people with that same spirit. But we are few, or maybe Wilson lost followers because of his lack of creativity in his skills. I'm hoping that once Wendy, Walter and Wortox's skill tree is accepted, more people interested in the game can support improving Wilson's skill tree.

By the way, I'm really excited to play with Wendy, Walter and Wortox's new skills but I don't want to leave Wilson aside because "I'm bored with his perks." I know my ideas aren't perfect, but I strongly wish they would add new and unexpected gameplay dynamics for Wilson.

In fact, I like the torch tree, I feel like Wilson is the bearer of fire like in the myth of Prometheus, where fire symbolizes knowledge and reason. This could easily suggest that Wilson's torch, when lit, can boost sanity and enable the creation of level 1 and 2 science prototypes (or that Wilson shares his prototype recipes). I even thought about Wilson being able to create new torches like a nightmare fuel torch (Black Light) or a lunar torch. In the end I just let the torch provide movement speed (alluding to the Olympic torch).

My point is that Wilson's perks can still give more, much more: with his magnificent beard, his gentlemanly appearance and, of course, his crazy mind of an alchemist, protoscientist, chemist, and more.

Truly. It's rather sad to see many players/people like him because of the lore, yet gameplay-wise he's so lacking. I'm not saying he should have sanity drain reduction like Wendy or Wortox (since even Maxwell doesn't have that despite the long ass time of him stuck on the Throne). But if other characters can have their personalities and characteristics be expanded and improved on via gameplay, why shouldn't he too?

Light :

maybe make it so light sources crafted by him have more of a late radius So it works more like he scientifically configured the materials in a way to make the largest light radius

medical:

medical things don’t really make sense for Wilson

Maybe you can replace this part of the tree with experiments gone awry that he can use as bombs or other weapons or maybe not even weapons if you can stretch the concept of experiments gone awry in a reasonable way to fit it

as a reference to the fact, he blew up a science lab at his old collegeand in the first don’t starve, animatic, an experiment blew up in his face

inventor:

Maybe you can replace slot four with different inventions or putting other items implied by quotes to be invented by Wilson in his character crafting tab

Transmutation:

Maybe make more of those crafts two way

ancient transmutations:

You should be able to get more glass shards out of That Moonrock to glass shard one

six fragments Thulesite seem like too much

Affinities:

The shadow Comrade seems a little lackluster

Maybe replace it with a beard hair homunculus

I would either place the infused moon shards to pure brilliance craft with pure brilliance and a dreadstone equivalent or have it be infused moon shards, and something that it would be made of

And also either some lunar equivalent to the beard homunculus idea or crafting silver during the moon phrases

If there were to be a beard whip, which branch would be suitable? Beard or Inventor? :wilson_confused:

Definitely in the beard one

also, I put the newer stuff in the main post and change the title around so if the clay developers come across this either for the first time or again, don’t think it’s a new post and if they read the post and written it off before not saying they have, but if they have it decreases the chance of them scrolling by thinking, they already seen it and not giving it a chance

dude that's literally what you gotta need to convert fragments to thulecite at the pseudoscience station.

surprise, surprise; it's just a neat reference to the old Shadow Wilson figure (and one-time appearance back in DS beta)

Ya but if you’re going to give him a craft separate of the pseudoscience station you think he’d have a more efficient way of using materials

Interesting what items are they?

Oh, I don’t know how I spaced that what if it was a mix of the two ideas where it is basically a small ingame version of the shadow Wilson figure made with nightmare, fuel and beard hair that runs around and does stuff for you

  2. Torch Longevity. Increases Torch durability by a total of 50%.
  3. Torch Toss. Throw on the ground (can use for cook food) or onto Mob for attack (disappears at hit, deals 17 of damage a set Mob on fire).

LOCKED SKILLS (PREREQUISITES: UNLOCK AT LEAST 3 TORCH SKILLS)

  • Ultimate Torch. (New item). An infinite torch with the efficiency burn time of a fire pit. Can use a Nitre (135 sec) to create Endothermic fire and cools gradually by fuel from -40° (270 sec) to -10° (67.5 sec). Setting a tree on cold fire will create an ice (instead of charcoal). Increases movement speed by 25% while equipped (olympic torch). Recipe: Scales x1, Gold Nugget x4, Red Gem x1.

Overall, I really like it, but I have a few notes:

torch tree:

Maybe use the endothermic torch to put out fires increasing the fuel Although I know it doesn’t have to be 100% realistic in real life and endothermic flame. The most it would do would be the cool the wood down a bit and at worst the wood would put the flame out, but if I have a source of heat too absorbed from it it’s able to persist

bread tree:

If you only get your hair after shaving

it how would you get the different walls wools back

transmutations:

To site fragments in fossils aren’t elected a thought fragment is much less useful than a fossil fragment

also, I don’t know if you meant to put this or not but I noticed that the crafts weren’t going both ways

chemistry branch:

what if you extend it to all ponds?

alignment:

What if instead of having an artificial brain and a heart motor what if you just attune to it?

What is the moon beam blaster or like the one that scrappy were pig had just have it be on a cool down also if you want to stick with the heart motor and artificial brain what if you make the add-ons to the moon beam blaster have two add-ons instead of one

you should definitely  post the skill tree in a threat of its own. It really deserves all the attention I can get.

I see you’re right about the telltale heart

With the meat effigy on the other hand, I think the Lord might of changed between beta and endgame because other characters who have no idea who Wilson was at the time, could craft it and expressed confusion on why and ended up looking like some random dude

thanks for the like on the Webber skill tree but it hasn’t been updated in a while. Here’s the newer one so far.
The pictures didn’t copy over so although not all the skills have an icon most of them do and there are also concept art of different things

also in alignment their second chunks of text describing infusing spiders just ignore that because I’m planning to change it sometime soon:

skill tree:

(befriended nurse spider to unlock)

  • Unbreakable friendship: Make decorated dens  not break when attacked and spiders in the  Bedazzled range only attack attackers and nurses spawn from tier 3 + decorated dens ground webs no longer reduce

(Befriend all spider types)

  • Beneficial bite : teach spiders how to “chop/mine” with each having the efficiency of a pig by demonstrating it done normally so they make the connection between that and them breaking down stuff + they eat yucuse snot now when you’re stuck

  • Silk harvester: razors can be used to remove webbing from tiles dropping two

  • Rapid Growth: Webber can upgrade dens with 4 silk instead of 5 silk

  • Regeneration sensitization:increase stats from nurse spiders for Webber(15 hp)

  • Nocturnally adept: partial night vision  (sense spiders walk around at night) only silhouettes  not enough to not be attacked by Charlie but enough to  see where your going, reduced sanity lose from dusk or night              60-80% during dawn and 40-60% during night.

  • Deep den sleeper:Stats for sleeping in dens to 2 health and 3 health per second

  • No picky eater: Webber has the ability to eat pig skin, bunny puffs, or any non human edible meats that pigs and spiders eat for 50-60 hunger

  • Den Relocation: Tier 1 dens can be picked up by Webber and relocated (affects Decorated Dens + can remove and relocate the stickers)(pulled from @JJ0264)

  • Unnatural brood: You are now able to craft the itsy bitsy nest reusing the baby spiders from the forge and they fill up a Polar Bearger Bin like item called the itsy bitsy nest and they would act as distractions somewhat like the parasitic shading  but the victim wouldn’t be immune to damage they each could only be outside the itsy bitsy nest for a total of 8 minutes after that they return to the itsy bitsy nest and nap and they’ll need to charge back up before using them again so they hunger durability that can be refilled using meat, honey, or electric milk/monster milk similar to the eye mask, but you decide if,when, and how many you takeout at a time so you can have them out over the course of multiple days without needing to recharge them. If you’re smart about it, also depending on what beard skin you have on will determine what they look like  they would look like tiny versions of what spiders from a den that has a queen that looks like that beards respective Webber skin as well as the egg sack having the same color, you get 6 slots with 12-20 second cool down until you can spawn the next one and they would do 9 damage, have 7 hp, upon death one will respond every 90 seconds

(You need this to craft other 3 crafts and after the first 4 uses you need to replace the den decorating set for five more uses each time you run out)

8 silk, 3 paper, and 1 spider egg, 1 den decorating set,24 health

Concept examples:

(like this except they smile like befriended spiders)

  • Carecrafts :  (unnatural brood required)

?:

?:

homemade den: You can make a homemade den if you place a cookie in the homemade den it will turn 2 spiders into that type, every time the den has a spider added it lose 1% durability, you can find out how much durability there is by inspecting, and you can repair it using silk but maybe by 2-5%. it has 12 spiders with the inventory of a scaled chest but for spiders only it’ll take 90 seconds for each spider to respawn Each time a spider respawns it will cost 10% power, 1 nightmare fuel Provides 50% power

it will spawn that Webbing Wickerbottom spawns with Overcoming Arachnophobia around it

4 beard hair,12 silk, 12 bone shards to craft it(bones making 4 pillars, a layer of silk, making up the walls and the rest being used as cushioning and decorations because it’s Webbers dens so it’s got Flex that decorated den drip) you could also call the spiders out of the den by interacting with it

And it can be broken using a hammer

  • Silkcrafts:

Silk shooter:

?:

Silk spindle:@blacknight7890 came up with an idea I re named it and changed its look but other then that it’s all there’s Learn to craft a 'Silk spindle', [like a giant spindle with spider hair and  a finial on it (with white string when silk is on it)] a structure that can be placed near decorated spider dens. Spiders will spin webs onto it over time, can be harvested for silk." [passive silk farming]

finial looks like this:

Yeah, I’m talking about them not recognizing him back in solo Don’t Starve

Characterization marches on, that's what. Same as Webber have more character development and such. Or WX-78 now being referred as "they/them" instead of "it/its" from DS.

I know I’m just saying, I don’t think he invented it because if they were able to craft it before they even met him or had any idea who he was to know how to make it

I feel like it’s important to note that they are able to do it before he was able to share the idea with them

yes and that's what I said about characterization marches on. They don't know who it was that made the meat effigy look, but now they do. That's literally it.

We can go back and forth on this argument but ultimately it's stated there in the field notes. Before everyone else (playable) was in the game, there's only Wilson.

thanks for the like on the Webber skill tree but it hasn’t been up in a while. Here’s the newer one so far.
The pictures didn’t copy over so although not all the skills have an icon most of them do and there are also concept art of different things

also in alignment their second chunks of text describing infusing spiders just ignore that because I’m planning to change it sometime soon:

also hey man you may wanna chuck this into your own thread: this is for WILSON'S improved skill tree concept.

I understand that i’m just saying that one is possible that the direction they wanted to take the lore might have changed in between the beta and the final product

If he wasn’t able to share it with anybody that the concept will be able to get to them how do we know he’s the one that invented it?

Like maybe I could see the shadow manipulator having the knowledge during his time alone or after he ascended to the throne but how do we know if maybe the other survivors were surviving before he entered the constant and it just happened to coincidentally it looks similar to him what the idea of his image was in the circulation of the shadow manipulator because he was the next victim

Sorry, but I’m not putting this trunk in my thread:

this is for WILSON'S improved skill tree concept.

It seems the chunk is convey anger, which I understand, but if I put it in my thread, then I don’t want the guy who seems so nice to excitedly(at least that’s how I interpreted the message, but you really can’t properly convey emotion through text alone, so I don’t know) asked to see my Webber skill tree to think that I’m conveying anger towards him

rest assured were right back to Wilson skill tree improvement tis but a small detour

The same as many other things we know of: character quotes/loading tips. You may not know that Wilson is also the one who invented the Gardeneer Hat, but it was stated in one of the loading tips. He's also the one who made the Think Tank a.k.a for boating/sailing.

Again, the lore is very very small and Klei doesn't seem to want to extend upon it so that's just what it is.

Also Marco literally said he's interested to see your stuff but not in this thread. You can just ping him in your thread, and he'll be notified and check it out whenever he's free.

In here, let's focus on Wilson's skill tree concept here, ok? Go big, go all out in your Webber thread but this thread is for Wilson only.

I knew about the gardeneer hat but also those two things are only found in don’t starve together the point in the timeline that we know that they’ve all met (not including characters that haven’t been added from solo Don’t Starve) so that can be explained by him just telling them how to make it.

and you just can't think if he also did the same about the meat effigy?

This argument had gone long enough.

solo Don’t Starve takes place before they meet so he can’t tell them if they’ve never met

Honestly, if anything, it’s helping you stay up on top of the suggestions and feedback feed

Only one golem can be reanimated. Recipe: Meat Effigy x1, Pure Horror x4, Dreadstone x10.

Hmm, for this one it's either applying the dismantle mechanic that Winona also had or just using the actual crafts of the meat effigy itself. So it'd be:

4 beard hairs, 4 boards, -40 HP/4 meats (if we want to use the DS version), 4 pure horrors, 10 dreadstone.

Which would you prefer?
