kroban Posted December 13, 2024 Share Posted December 13, 2024 Imma make it short because I yap a lot, I main Walter (tho I dont think it matters when it comes to the camping branch), heres more ideas I have for camping perks, seeing that on the past hotfix Klei said that they are (probably) going to add Camping/boyscout related skills: - A way to upgrade campfires: Walter most likely learned about the different types and how to setup a good campfire on the Scouts. My suggestion is a "kit" Walter uses to give campfires 1 additional effect. Fuel lasting more, bigger light radius, stronger freezing/cooling factor, or perhaps making it so other characters can cook faster on it and Walter does it at his current speed but cooking 2 at a time. - Getting more stats from eating jerky: Walter is good at stacking morsel, and this will give more utility to the dusty Drying racks that very few people use. - Walter is able to dry more food on drying racks: Maybe 3, 4, or 5 at once. - Or, Walter can "upgrade" drying racks: For example with ropes + salt he upgrades a basic drying rack to make it more efficient and able to dry more food at once, and perhaps also making it so all characters can use it, to give Walter more multiplayer utility. - Different versions of Pinetree Pioneer hat: Maybe crafts where you combine the hat with other materials to make it better, be it for some high insulation on Winter/Summer, armor, as an upgraded miner's hat for light, or as the only sanity hat for Walter. - Badges for Walter: @_mylilsunshine_ made a way cooler post about this in detail. Another badge system but different from Woby, on rowing, first-aid, wilderness, camping, cooking, backpacking, bird study (more loot from birds?) etc etc. To make it different and more balanced, maybe its fixed buffs rather than Woby's (Walter says he already earned lots of badges), he can only pick a limited amount to focus, has to "sew the badges" on the Pioneer Hat, and only has the effects while wearing it. - Increasing the radius of the "tree sanity" buff: I will make another post explaining this in more detail because its a whole thing on its own. But esentially, this perk is extremely underrated and ignored by most players, and I think part of the reason is that the radius is too small for the "new Walters" to notice it, and they also don't know how to make good use of it. So, my suggestion is that, increasing the radius a bit, and maybe also adding a small icon on the sanity bar so the player can tell when its active and whats the radius of effect, would go a long way. Feel free to add more ideas or give your opinions on how the ones here can be made better in the comments, from what I have read in the forum many people already gave awesome ideas for Walter's camping stuff, and I think the more feedback we give about this the better. I don't think the radius is the reason people just don't go out of their way to hang around trees while I'm not really big on the idea of improving the tree ability as I just see it as a neat bonus if we do go that route I think a better way to go a about it is to make it so if Walter goes near twice the amount of trees he'll keep the sanity buff for half a day even when away from them. 7 minutes ago, kroban said: A way to upgrade campfires: Walter most likely learned how to make a good campfire and the different types on the Scouts. This seems a bit too niche however another idea I feel would be good is to allow Walter to tell campfire stories without a campfire for half the sanity gain and perhaps a bonus to produce 2 marshmallows if he finishes a story over a campfire these would also be granted to anyone in the range of his sanity aura when the story ends. Though his sanity aura should probably also increase in size. The marshmallows stats being +5 hunger and +10 sanity these would also only be awarded once per night per Walter to prevent marshmallow farming. Also as a funny bonus it'd be fun if him telling the story by a campfire would pacify mobs for a few minutes assuming you don't attack them perhaps having them come over by the fire to listen to the story. A pretty boring one, but what if: a skill that allows Walter to sleep in his portable tent during daytime too, as well as increasing the speed at which it restores his stats a bit? Vendortrash Posted December 15, 2024 Share Posted December 15, 2024 I have two ideas to contribute as far as scouting/survival are concerned. I think Walter is a great candidate for having more non-combat group utility, and that's the thing that I see is lacking in his skill tree. Solo, he's fine on resource usage, but in a group he's kinda a resource hog (mitigated somewhat by the increased crafting ammo skills but that's also kind of a fun tax, NGL). I'd hate to play him if there was a Wanda in the group, obviously, and I'd hate having a Walter on the team if I was a Wanda, and that's just one example. Yet, he provides hardly anything to a group apart from his campfire stories and his cheaper, portable, and more durable tent. So here's my pitch for his scouting side: 1) There are now 3 characters that have teleporting abilities so clearly Klei shouldn't be so shy about giving more mobility options. Perhaps one skill for Walter could be navigating wormholes better, since he's both fearless and seems to enjoy exploring them? At rank 1, he can choose between any of the other seven wormholes in the world when he jumps into one (I know that's not how "wormholes" work in science, but we don't have to abide by those rules in a game). Rank 2, he can do the same with Tentipillars, and anyone who follows him through before the player playing Walter chooses a destination will also arrive at that destination, as Walter is leading them). 2) a buff for sleeping in Walter's tent based on what biome (or what surrounding turf if that's easier to code) the tent is in. Got no idea about what buffs those would be, but rank 1 would give Walter the buff. Rank 2 could extend the duration of the buff for Walter and grant the buff to teammates at rank 1's duration. Perhaps even a third rank could unlock a mega tent that up to six players could use at once (20 uses, 10% durability loss per player), that gives everyone in the tent Walter's buff AND extended duration. ALSO - He's a Pinetree Pioneer. "Pioneer" doesn't just connotate someone who explores, but also someone who is first to tame and settle the land. He could and should have something in his tree that makes basing, makes putting down roots in the Constant easier for him and his fellow survivors. I just haven't thought of how or what that could be. Lastly, we need Woby snacks! Shouldn't be a skill, but we need a consumable for Woby that makes a small Woby instantly big but more importantly makes a Big Woby instantly small. Now, I may be mistaken on this, but my understanding (as I have not used those badges yet in the beta) is that only Small Woby can do those tasks. Even if that is not the case, it's still a QoL issue because having a large sprite like a Beefalo (which you can send away from you via the bell) or Woby hugging on your position as you try and get into your chests, your ice boxes, your crock pots gets darn annoying. Make it require a Prestihatitator or even a shadow manipulator if you have to, or make it a crock pot recipe. If unlocking it HAS to be a skill point cost, fold it in with the Woby training station. Yeah that would be good too, but I think that if Klei adds a perk for drying it would be better as an upgrade on the basic thing, it could kill 2 birds with 1 stone, Drying racks are outdated and need some tweaks, and Walter would become THE character that can upgrade those for everyone while also benefiting him the most. But a portable drying thing would be awesome, who knows, maybe Klei could even add both. I agree, I already give a lot of use to the "tree sanity" stuff, like making my base with tree areas, so personally I think a perk for it would be kind of a waste, but, if Walter gets a perk making it better maybe more of the "new Walters" will give it more attention. That would be pretty good ngl, I remember someone posted on the forum an image of like, a way to turn the portable tent into a Siesta Lean-to tent with extra ropes and twigs, it would be awesome for recovering sanity on daytime and during Summer. My issue with just upgrading it is that if it's just going to give more space it doesn't seem worth a skill point because it's not like we're limited on space or that the materials are particularly hard to get.
