Depth worm boss spawn mechanic idea

Recommended Posts

Me and a lot of other people dislike the way the depth worm boss spawn. I've seen suggestions that it should spawn below the player and I thought it was a good idea. Then I thought, what if it spawned above the player.

The boss will dangle on the top of the chosen player's screen and make a light source under them. After one minute, the depth worm boss will come down on top of the player, if connected it will swallow the player. After that, the boss will play out as normal. The one minute timer is so players can run away from their bases to ensure it wouldn't be destroyed. Dread stone pillars will block the depth worm boss from striking an area and will wait until you leave it's radius. Normal pillars would be destroyed.

To better visualize what I'm saying, here's an example what it would look like (credit to YTSunny).

I love how refreshing that sounds! So far the only other cave creatures I can think off that come from above are the white fuzzy cave spiders. It would make a nice addition to the threats coming from the CEILING too (not just earthquakes and acid rain)

Batilisks also leave and enter the cave through the ceiling at dusk and dawn. xd Plus Moleworms and Rabbits fall down from above during earthquakes. Oh, well. Feel free to take this as another elitist forum post for pointing things out how things actually appear in the game.

lord of fruit flies and CC?

True... but like you can run away from the meteor shower that will spawn CC.

What I'm saying is a cave boss coming from the grounds in between surface and caves would be fantastic to apply. Like perhaps it could have the same windup as the earthquakes but then you see something weird like bone shards and spikes falling from above. Then with what the OP suggested, have the boss lunging at you.

I honestly can't play the game atm so I haven't met those guys yet (also somehow didn't appear when I tried the beta)

SHOWER ME IN DECAY!!!!  (bone shard rain, definitely, that would be the best addition to this game to fit exactly my thirst for morbidity even more) (But having a USAGE for those bones to build my own bone-themed lair of death would make it even better. Or craftable cemetery / more abandoned structures [ruin-LIKE] based decorations maybe?)

Honestly. I love it. More ceiling mobs are a welcome addition!

Both Batilisks, and their mutated forms, the Naked Mole Bats also come from the ceiling in some very blink-and-you'll-miss-it scenarios.

Between the two its easier to see the Mutants falling from the ceiling, but bats also do ceiling drops, way harder to come across though.

Yes but they are not REALLY what I was refering to with meaning /actual threats/. Sure the creatures falling down can be dangerous, but the threats I mean specific monsters. The batilisks are a good example though, but I wasn't aware of that as I haven't noticed this in my worlds so far unless being OUTSIDE near the unplugged sinkhole. (probably I am too lucky when in caves?????)

I have been playing the TOGETHER game not long enough it seems since none of this has happened to me so far xD My caves seem a creepily safe space?!?!?!

This is not a new concept for fixing the worm spawn. You're very near option C) and frankly I would fix your idea similar to C), by removing the 1 minute timer

C) Changing his A.i to make him, when meeting the players, more "relaxed" or "lurking" (similar how dragonfly behaved in the original DS) so that he doesn't immediately destroy and attack the environment, how he does it now, and we have a choice if engage and fight with him or run and hide to force him leave and despawn.>>
