Jakepeng99
It would resemble their greatest fear, and prey upon their downsides (if they have one). We don't know their greatest fears, only Klei knows. The nightmares may have a bonus drop. Wormwood could have a fire related nightmare creature who can burn him using shadow flames. (Shadow flames wont spread and greif stuff) Willow's could be an ice-related nightmare that can freeze her. Could drop ice? Wilson's could have non since he is the default, or he could have one related to failure and explosions. WX'S could appear on or near water sources, and could attack him and make him wet. (A stationary creature that can pop up on ponds or oceans) Wes will have the nightmares of every character. What do you think is the survivors greatest fear, and what would their nightmare be like? (Maybe a physical thing instead of something deeper like lonliness, unless you can think of a way to turn it into a nightmare) They don't need to be aggressive nightmares, they can be like shadow hands or wavy jones where they do something else. Thematically, shadow creatures we see are the Ancients that shed their skin, indicated by the quote of the Shadow Reaper: "I think I used to be a farmer before I shed my sssskin..." It would not make sense for shadow creatures to be the survivor's nightmares, because that is not what Klei is going for. There are two opposing forces, Shadow and Lunar, Sanity and Lunacy, being a Lunatic should not create lunar gestalts that are related to the survivors, the same way being Insane should not be connected to their fears. Survivors aren't the main focus here, they are just pawns in a giant chess game between Alter and Them. Anything more fear related to be added to this game is a big yes to me. Especially when the fear is being personalized like in this post. I kind of fear though, that Walter would be the one to not have one, or could anyone think of something for him specifically? [I'm curious because he actually sounds like someone who wouldn't really fear the nightmares.] For Wickerbottom: A nightmare creature related to sleep, since she's insomniac, probably hasn't slept in ages, just imagining WHAT she might dream if she ever fell asleep again may sound fitting to me. DegenerateFurry
Warly fears his Maman fully losing herself to her Alzheimer's and dying alone, without him to take care of her, now that he's permanently trapped in the Constant. I am sure this is his greatest fear, even worse than uncooked food. No, I do not know how this'd manifest as a nightmare creature. Maybe the nightmare creature could represent a shadow of Maman not responding to anything at all, not even to Warly's food? It would be heartbreaking, but without making the nightmare creature "too" dark. [I don't know if this would be a good balance between dark topic (Alzheimer's disease) and not making people too sad about it? I mean....if it was a mod it could be as sad as possible, I wouldn't mind, but I'm not sure if Klei would make it too detailed. (I mean, I often wonder how exactly they decide the level of disturbance for DS gameplay (I mean gameplay not the animated shorts and other non-in-game-information)] Link to comment https://forums.kleientertainment.com/forums/topic/158319-what-do-the-characters-fear-the-most-each-character-having-an-exclusive-nightmare-creature/#findComment-1735752 Share on other sites

W0l0l0
This is a great idea. This could allow each character to have a standardised downside, that could get more powerful when rifts are opened too. Each shadow could have mechanics specific to their survivor. I've also wanted more shadow creatures, and this would make me really want to try out each character to explore the shadow creatures. Only issue is that we could have a dozen unique mobs for everyone instead of only 1 for each survivor. It'll take a decent amount of work. I don't really think this is the full picture as many shadow creatures do not have Ancient physiology. I think it's more likely the Ancients found a way to bypass or delay their corruption by weaving themselves into items, and saying they "shed my skin" is just a term to refer to that process. Although I do agree that Shadows aren't fear-based, more of the lovecraftian idea that they always exist, and madness just helps you see them actually being there. I think it's more likely the Ancients found a way to bypass or delay their corruption by weaving themselves into items, and saying they "shed my skin" is just a term to refer to that process. I don't think they weaved themselves into items. We are just using their animate corpses to create our tools. (more on that later, is that really the case here???)The fact that the Scythe says it used to be a farmer is just probably a joke, the more important fact is that they "shed their skin". We see it also on the murals in the Atrium. People started shedding their skins, becoming shadows. And it's also not a thing they actually wanted to do. As Ancient Fuelweaver says "You will fall as we did", "My kingdom, in tatters". Suggesting that all that happened was negative. Another idea, which seems actually more logical and plausible: What's more interesting, is why does a Scythe made out of Pure Horror and Dark Tatters speak in a manner that would imply they are one of the Ancients? Don't those resources come for a world beyond? From the Shadow Rifts? The Ink Blights? It's possible that the Scythe is just trying to manipulate the survivors somehow, playing tricks and making them believe their real identity is one of the Ancients, when in fact, it is one of the creatures that led to their downfall. What would be the point of that? The survivors probably would not side with such a destructive, evil force. But that's stepping too much into speculation. The Scythe also seems pretty content with being what it is, making it pretty suspicious. Weren't the events that had befallen the Ancients tragic? Didn't they hate it just like Ancient Fuelweaver did? Charlie wanted Fuelweaver dead, and Charlie cooperates with Them. It really seems like the Scythe had made a fatal mistake by not being negative about being one. marshyds
heres ideas for custom insanity effects characters could have: Willow - Things she walks near will start smoldering sometimes (this is probably catastrophic...) Wormwood - Incapable of hurting a plant (I.E digging, chopping, ect.) Wolfgang - stronger nightmare creatures. Wanda - nightmare creatures always spawn, though rarely at max sanity. All hell breaks loose at insanity levels. (based off of her trailer) Maxwell - Stronger nightmare creatures Wes - can speak, but words are automatically translated into french Warly - Food sanity gain is inversed, maybe... Wendy - Abigail becomes unusable, dies again (loser.) Walter - a swarm of 4 shadow bees sometimes spawn, each giving 5 sanity for killing em. cropo
I still think the shadows are stealing culture and "shape" from every civilization they come into contact with, every pure-shadow item (like the dark sword) originates from somewhere in real life and the shadows are just copying its appearance, I think that it's actually a decent theory to suspect some of the ancients were able to escape their transfiguration into shadows by putting themselves inside of objects; they would seemingly have the knowledge to do this as well with their prolonged use of the fuel. Like the shadows take over someone eventually, manifesting themselves into reality and are able to interact with it...but what can they do when they take over a meaningless object that has no arms or legs? Or, say, a statue?
