I should check them more often then! I already exhausted all my kelp in the world and now only hunt for it in those ocean debris which don't spawn too often unfortunately. lowercase skye
My advice would be to use nautopilots to bring 6-8 back to your base all at once. I got about 22 just gathering up the ones around the lunar island and the part of the mainland closest to the lunar island, but I know there's probably a good 10+ more out there. Every time I come back from a trip, I check the otter dens, and they've usually each got 1 item inside and 1 otter respawned. Some recent hauls from killing them and harvesting their dens: The stale/rotting fish meats and barnacles can be salted back up for basically free now that Crab King bumpers make salt mining trivial, and the 5% chance for bottles adds up really fast with enough dens. I've been living off of bacon and eggs and surf n turf for quite a while now, and have a basically constant supply of treasure bottles with otters and Crab King kills. Otters are awesome! lowercase skye
Some advice I just learned the hard way: make sure your marotter farm is OUTSIDE the range of the moon quay. Elding spear dash. That's the answer. She can do it reliably. If you have concerns, wear armor. They don't attack all at once to a point where it's very dangerous. They move slow, have low damage and are food driven. They eat each other more often than they keep aggro. As Wigfrid, it's not hard. Difficult thing is, she sometimes can attack the actual dens on top of the kelp boat and that's 147 damage for a mistake. I don't even know if otter dens regenerate HP. NOt the kelp boat, but the actual dens Link to comment https://forums.kleientertainment.com/forums/topic/158023-so-marroter-farms-anyone/page/2/#findComment-1735207 Share on other sites

chirsg
Harvesting the dens takes forever. There's an overwhelmingly high chance that you do a full gather animation for one single rot. Sure, you can get your fill of bull kelp stalks, but the problem is that when you have all you need, you're kind of forced into keeping the dens clear because the otters like to stash message bottles. The process is just absurd. It would be not worth it, but unfortunately, you kind of need to keep at it to get bottles and honestly, it's one of the biggest time wasters. Aren't bottles only a drop from the otters themselves? Bottles aren't generated by the den, and otters won't pick them up since they only grab things that are edible, so you should be fine just killing them for the 5% bottle chance while ignoring the den itself if you don't care for its loot. Lovens
I'm still working on my farm but I loooove this thing already! I opted to check dens about once per season now since I don't care about most of the drops. I only farm them for kelp stalks and bottles, and I found out that the longer you leave the farm unloaded, the more loot it accumulates over time without the need of killing otters. Here's an example of the loot I gathered after the farm was unloaded for the entire Summer+5 days of Autumn (minus meats and rot - put them all into the scaled furnace): I have the farm split into 4 sections, each has is its own enclosure with 7 otter dens inside it. Pig skins in the corners behind doors are the baits for now but I'm thinking of switching to backpacks with pig skins or tin fishing bins with live fish. These seem to attract them better and they won't be picked up by a lazy forager I often use around. I started placing houndiuses around to help me with otter kills but that's more of a whim - I can kill them just fine with Wanda while outranging most of them. It's a bit tedious to pick up all the meats and I don't need so many, but I pick them up anyway to keep the farm clean and so otters don't stash it into their dens. All the stray anchor statues used to be parts of the dock outlines before I expanded those docks into the farm. Couldn't use them to wall off otters because they'd pathfind through them offscreen and eat whatever bait attracts them. I'll probably use those anchors to wall off the outside of the farm area later. This is how the farm looks on the map. Unfortunately I found out that it's barely in Moon Quay raid range only after accumulating a bunch of dens and building a bit in the area. It's crazy how far they can raid - their island is on the opposite side of the Oasis Desert which I chose for my base. This appears to be the range of their raids based on the ones I got earlier near my Malbatross dock (NE part of the base, above the Lunar Bridge). I got raided 3 times while building the Marotter Farm below the Lunar Bridge. One of the first raids did a classic "idiot monkeys destroyed their own boat and abandoned the ship without me doing anything about it" thing. The other two raids turned out to be the ones with a treasure on their boat and I was quite worried about it. Luckily they didn't destroy any dens, but they nearly destroyed some of the nearby dock tiles and a couple of walls. That's when I also learned that cannons can damage docks, and that you can also repair them using wood items. Luckily my otter den enclosures are now far from the nearest open ocean where monkey boats spawn so they can't possibly reach otter boats with their cannons. The other problem I faced is skittersquids who like to spawn inside otter den enclosures and sometimes start fighting otters. If they do it, they destroy fences and otters can escape. So far I don't even know what to do with them so I turned them to "Low" in the settings. If anyone has any tips on how to deal with them I'd appreciate it. I was briefly considering using ranged weapons but they'd make skittersquids all aggro on me and approach the fence and likely break it as well. NotGabriel
I don’t really farm them since they have some long respawn timers, but I found the perfect use for them in my current survival world! You see I just so happened to get 3 marotter dens generated around my deserts, which happened to generate together. so it’s this awesome deal for me, as every time I go to get a big cactus harvest, I can also get lots of Meat and Morsels. Every 10 days or so I can just stockpile lots of food, everything I’d ever need for solo survival needs!
