Better DST boats

Recommended Posts

ooo! one thing I would really like is some sort of fishing net attachment for the boats, like a trawling net that glides behind your boat picking up kelp and maybe rarely a fish!

One of my favorite niche things to do as Warly is see how long I can last with my portable crockpot on the ocean, and I'd love to see more ways to collect food out at sea!

i have a few ideas

one: being able to raise/lower the anchor, sails, and winch from the steering wheel

i dont care if requires an upgraded steering wheel, my QOL would skyrocket if i didnt have to GET OFF the steering wheel every time i want to speed up or slow down or stop in an emergency.

two: binoculars ON the boat, lets other players look foward (not revealing the map, move the location their camera is centered on to search for stuff) rotates 360*

three: for the love of god make those sails transparent when sailing. or make them turn into stumps while sailing so i can see what is behind them. incredibly frustrating to try to interact with boat stuff when the sail is SO BIG

So basically the trawl boat from SW.

Which, yknow, not bad. Maybe it can pick up the debris in the ocean too.

I'd like it if the SW encrusted/armored boat gimmick can be implemented onto the DST, since we all have suffered from those unexpected crashes into sea stacks unprompted and suffer the loss of the expensive shell bumpers/countless boat patches. Like make it an upgrade kinda thing.

It's questionable at best. That's all.

Okay.

Why?

I would prefer CONSTRUCTIVE criticism.

I am fine with you not liking my idea. but honestly the complete dismissal without reasons is unhelpful. do you LIKE getting off the steering wheel to control stuff, would you prefer if it was a baseline ability without an "upgrade" (which I was saying that I want the feature, and I don't care how I get it, I wasn't actually suggesting it be an upgrade)

do you think the multiplayer aspect is integral to the sailing experience.

reasons please.

Everything being separate is probably meant to invoke the whole 'crew working together to pilot a ship' vibe, but I wouldnt mind a steering wheel upgrade for solo players.

Maybe it could be something malbatross or crab king drops, or something.

It could be something you can trade for from sharkboi. I know he can use more trading items.

I think we all can agree that most stuff Klei did in recent times are just to fix the problems they first come up with. Again, yknow, not bad, but the execution kinda stinks. Like Woodie's full moon/moonstorm transformation got removed via the lunar affinity and now he's just Wilson+.

An improved steering wheel would be fine, but like what else can it do? What other possible things that can be added to make the upgrade worthwhile other than just "i'm so frustrated by this whole boating mechanic that klei made in the first place"?

Sure, I hate the sailing but I hate the rowing more. At least with sailing, it's more or less a cheap version of the SW boats. Arrow keys/WASD is much nicer to do and use than spamming right click for rowing, up to the point where people would rather depend on the auto-rowing mod because that's how mind-numbing rowing is. And it's not like you can't rotate your camera to see whatever is around/you missed.

alright, lets brainstorm, what ELSE should this new steering wheel do, maybe make sails turn faster? that'd be pretty nice. Maybe it could also raise/lower everything as fast as 2 players.

what would you want it to do? this thread is for suggestions, what do you think would make it less frustrating?

I suggested at one point a "crows nest" mast attachment that would function like that new headpiece item they added in the scrap update that zooms out the camera, it would be useful especially with multiple people for navigation.

They could stand to add more boats and boat accessories as well, perhaps a moonglass boat, lower durability than the wood, non flamable, but has lower drag making it accelerate up to speed faster and maybe even have a higher top speed.

Oar mounts for oar storage/easier paddling.

Floating storage bins that survive the boat collapsing saving any items that would otherwise sink, or heavy duty containers that do sink but can be retrieved with a winch.

A broken shell boat thats very fragile but can deal raming damage?

Palmcone boat armor.

A mushroom boat that self repairs leaks but decays over time.

Alternate boat patches, maybe one made of honey that melts when it gets hot making it a non permenant but easily renewable fix.

Well, if I am to be honest, there's nothing really cool that can be done with a steering wheel. Its purpose is just that: to steer. If I say adding a brake mechanic to it, well too bad; the anchor is already there. But I also don't like how one item just serves one purpose, as seen with many new items we got by now. So let's go with the brake.

I can't not say it =)
DST boats are too small for all the stuff going on. They should be bigger and/or have connectors, allowing to make even bigger base-boats. True multiplayer stuff
Small personal ships from SW can (and i think should) be introduced, not to replace cookie platforms, but to compliment them. Bigger cookie boats can have "lifeboat dock" attachment to hold smaller personal boats. Also great for solo players.

It's nice, but they already have complexified fishing mechanic and winch, i'd rather like them to make those two work

DST cookie boats are about crew, personally i don't want it changed. Better add some solo-player crew, like pirate monkeys

Yeah, spyglass or crow's nest. I really don't know why such things don't exist in DST yet.
Alternative is to auto-zoom out the camera while you are behind the steering wheel. But this is more QoL than sailing immersion

I've been saying it all the time, like why do i have to build my sails on the upper part of the ship, instead of center where they belong. And even if i build those ugly nose-sails, one camera rotation and they are even uglier.
I really want fixed mast slots in the center, and all sails stuff adjusted for that.

Yes, oar mounts, so that when you are using it, you character auto-rows. Also nerf oars, how can they easily replace sails? Give oar buffs only to Wolfgang via skills, if oars can be better than sails, it's only in his hands.

Better rockjaw armor

Nice

Well, you guys named pretty much all i wanted from boats

I second the upgraded steering wheel. A magical wheel enchanted with lunar magic to control all aspects of your boat- anchor, masts maybe even cannons.

Could be a drop from crab king to encourage us to fight him sooner?

What if instead of a band aid the made it so we can control other staff while we steer if is close enough?

Anyways, i think people need some practice and agility, isnt that hard to control a boat... but requires mouse skill and reflex, thing that was never require in the game...

Basically a "git gud" scenario. Pretty rare in this game lately

I only want less fragile boats (they dont havr much hp) but is something that migh come with the new ancient boat, maybe faster turning (thing that isnt a problem with practice) and improved autopilots. I love nautopilots but since the addition of bootlegs i dont have a reason to use them since i only use them to make secondary cargo boats to fill them with nuts and sunken chests

I have a few ideas for improvements:

- Sails getting buffed -

I play with the sailing rebalance mod and WOW is it better, in the base game they barely do a thing. I think buffing them would do good for the boat economy.

- Cannonballs and Cannon buff-

Their price is not worth the damage they deal, along with the fact that they are hard to aim on moving targets.

Maybe they could get an increased explosion range, along with controlling how far it lands?

- Deck illuminator -

I think the easiest solution to making this a viable thing over the thunder rod is giving it the ability to scare off mobs, while this is niche, it could have use if you're not into getting interrupted by rockjaws.

- A harpoon for pulling in enemies and items -

Basically, it would deal about 10 damage to mobs and pull them toward the boat (Perhaps even getting them stuck, hitting them would free them.)

It would also have a secondary function of catching items and destroying sea stacks (At the cost of durability?)

This would make ocean traveling less tedious since you wouldn't have to paddle over to things 10 meters away from you.

Thoughts?

Yeah trading off health for speed would perfectly fit risk and reward, would also give the lunar island something related to boat travel (which other biomes love to do.)
