Wortox skill tree ideas

Recommended Posts

What ideas do you have for the wortox skill tree?

id personally like to see some crafts for wortox utilizing his souls, simply because I think they could look really cool. Like imagine some sort of staff with a winding soul at the end instead of a gem or smth that’d be super cool. Or maybe a lunar alignment craft where you create something similar to wagstaff’s lunar energy containers but for souls, that could be cool.

I’d also like a perk that makes him stronger when he’s close to his 20 soul cap. I love the balancing act of trying to keep your souls as close to 20 as possible without going over the limit there’s a lot of risk reward there and I think you could expand that.

I think some skills that would allow him to be more mischievous and tricky would be fun. I have ZERO idea what this means but maybe one of you guys has an idea.

This whole "spells" menu is getting more bothersome in my opinion. If Wortox can have a container for his souls, it'll be just about the same as relegating one of his main inventory slots for the souls.

The Soul Scepter from the Forge could be interesting to add, but perhaps with some good, creative tweaks; unlike Wigfrid's Elding Spear that just straight up copies the Forge Spear's dash attack.

  • He needs to see allies Hp, or at least have some way to discern those that need healing and those that don’t
  • He should be able to teleport a beef while you ride it . Lazy explorer lets you teleport them already.
  • He should heal ridden beefalos with his souls. Maybe even allied mobs too.

Other new stuff would be fine by me, but the three points mentioned above are the things I always find annoying that he doesn’t have already.

I'm thinking of the opportunity cost of having a skill that does this. It should probably do something else as well so it doesn't feel like a dead pick for solo play.

●More potent Heals/stat gain at the cost of the soul echo

●Craftable Desert stone-esque object that uses Wortox as the medium. Give em to your allies so they can always reach you

●Destroy a soul to cause a large Aoe.... something? Idk, maybe scares mobs, Aoe damage, mark map for everyone, slow heal circle, Idk

●Fist/mark an enemy, once a day(?), for some extra souls upon death. Marking a boss releases souls when a certain amount of damage is done

●Warping underneath an enemy Does a cool uppercut that deals.... more damage i guess Idk

●Can enter a pun-off with any wilson in the lobby

●apply a soul to things. Sends you to map screen. Select where to soul hop the object/creature

●Soul heal affects more stuff

-Soothes angered enemies (Things like dogs/pigs will re-aggro real quick)

-makes plants happy

just adding some ideas others can hopefully bounce off of.

- Branch 1: Magic stamina -

1. Skill: Adrenaline rush - Wortox gains a new spell, which lets him give a 25% speed boost to allies for 8 minutes (Cost: 4 souls)

2. Skill: Panic attack - Adrenaline rush now increases Wortox's own speed by 15%

3. Skill: Leg breaker - Wortox can run up to 35% faster depending on how many souls he has during adrenaline rush. Going over the limit will temporarily make him 25% slower.

- Branch 2: Mending magic -

1. Skill: Mending - Wortox's souls now repair ally armors, weapons and tools for 10% durability

2. Skill: Repairman - Wortox's souls now repair his own armor, weapons and tools for 5% durability.

3. Skill: Alternative source - Wortox can use his souls to fuel nightmare fuel objects for 1,5x the effectiveness of nightmare fuel.

- Branch 3: Trick or trick? -

1. Skill: Mimic - Wortox can cast a spell to copy an ally's stats, damage, speed, abilites (excluding crafts) and defense for 8 minutes. (Cost: 8 souls)

2. Convincing disguise - Wortox is able to now mimic mobs too, but without the added damage bonus or abilties. (Causes same species enemies to ignore you).

3. Indistuingishable - Wortox may copy abilities of enemies too.

- Branch 4: Lone soul -

1. Skill: Wormhole - Wortox gains a spell, which lets him spawn a wormhole that goes anywhere, this wormhole is permanent. (Cost: 5 MAXIMUM souls, meaning you can only hold 15)

2. Skill: Wortox may bring allies with him to places without the fuss of a wormhole, though this will cost an additional 4 souls.

3. Skill: Displacement - Wortox may teleport enemies anywhere.

ill come up with more later

I think an intersting idea is to add the ability to get Boss Souls that have special modifiers. Like Deerclops' Soul would act as a permanent chilled amulet, albiet stopping before freezing and provide an immunity to freezing for a day or two. Things like that would be interesting to help make Wortox's end game a bit more interesting. I'm also partial to the idea of him getting a new container made out of moonglass that he can create which would hold half a stack of souls permanently, allowing him to stockpile them for later. I could also see a tree where Wortox could infuse food with souls to make their external effects become a pusdo AoE. Like you eat Jellybeans and then the ally in question has a small regen aura around them for as long as the jellybeans last.

I could also see a psudo filler tree based around Pommegranate, which would be very useful to help replace souls as end game food if you wanted.

Probably some combat perks. I heavily dislike the choice to make every character a combat character, but yeah. Wortox needs them.

Wortox in general is in kind of a weird spot, becuase when you actually break his kit down? He's kind of sort of completely terribly designed.

He's dependant on killing things to aquire souls. But has no perks to make killings things easier. No bonus damage, no special traits that deal damage. Ect. He can heal, sure. But that requires souls, which are the reason he's fighting in the first place. And to top it all off, there's no scaling to how many souls creatures drop beyond boss monsters dropping 8 souls instead of one, meaning Wortox has no reason ever go out of his way to kill stronger monsters.

So ultimately, what you've ended up with is a character who's entire gameplay loop encourages sitting in base killing low-risk and easily farmable creatures to amass souls. Imagine playing Wigfrid, but she doesn't have any damage or resistance boost, she doesn't have any starting equipment, and everything you kill will only ever drop 1 meat and give you 5 HP and sanity back. So instead of playing hyper aggressively like she does now, you just sit in base all winter killing rabbits and bees for HP and food.

The fact that he can heal up to 56 HP from killing a single butterfly in a 100% vanilla server and yet still needed to be buffed in the Wickerbottom refresh should really tell you just how much of a mess he is.

I suppose with all that established, I think it becomes clear that there are really only 2 things that Wortox "needs" in his skill tree.

A way to deal increased damage without any repeated investment on his part.

Soul drops that scale with the HP your target has instead of only ever dropping 1.

Oh, and as I said in a previous topic, Wortox should be able to give a big fat middle finger to Charlie and Wagstaff by aligning himself with the Forge or Gorge instead of the shadows or the moon.

This one could be interesting, especially when Wortox said he "came" from the Ancient Gateway. And we (somewhat) know that the Gateway was important to the lore, because of the Metheus Puzzles. But also as shown in his short, he already seemed to be in the Constant for a decently long time.

So unless Klei will be willing to explore the ambiguity of his actual "home place" then it's just :wilson_tranquil:

i think its probably save to say that there is a soul cap increase in the wortox skill tree, i mean it feels like an easy pick to be in there

I considered this when I created this thread but I ultimately don’t think I like the idea. As I said in my initial post, one of the most fun parts of wortox to me is the balancing act of trying to use your souls in such a way that you always have enough for later without risking getting over 20 or wasting them. I’d hate for this cap to get increased and this balancing act to become easier, it’d make him a much less fun character to me. Skill trees should give characters buffs and new toys to play with instead of lessening their downsides, imo.

Those are fixes, not skills. Like Wurt's merm king working through shards now. Having to pay for that with skillpoints would be super lame

Maybe like a red filter onto the allies? But only he can see them of course.

It could be like floating red numbers above player's heads, like in Death Note =)
If that is the case, that could deserve to be a skill, not a fix
He could also see mobs' hp

That's a good idea

Teleport-attack is what i wanted to have a lot of times while playing Wortox

He could also see when enemies and bosses are about to die. Or their health bar altogether.

However they want to implement them its fine by me as long as when I play wortox those things exist lol
