Shadows and Transcription (lore)

Recommended Posts

So, about that new short…

Obviously I’m intrigued by the shadow film reel, it is a bit goofy yes but I think it has some major implications for how shadows work. Specifically I’m starting to notice a strong connection between them and various methods of transcription and recording.

We already knew that nightmares could travel through recordings/writings through the codex umbra and voxola radio/gramophone, but now we know that nightmares can travel through ANY sort of recording or transcription, even from an ordinary camera. I really like this idea of recordings serving not as static transcriptions but as conduits for shadows to move and act. I’m curious what you guys think, and I also have some questions myself.

One of my questions is what’s the deal with gestalts then? Do they behave similarly? Is a lunar radio which serves as a conduit for gestalts possible?

Also, what’s the deal with Wanda and clocks? How do they interact with shadows?

And what’s the deal with the end of the new short? After wagstaff watches maxwell’s show, a shadow hand tries to send him to the constant but it ends up… sending the projection to the constant?? What???

Again I’m curious to see what you guys think

The camera and the book both seem like a portal in a way. The book was letting things out according to maxwells writings and the camera projects the constants world. The book also pulls maxwell into the constant(?). Wanda's clocks also can hold information, time, which she was reversing stored time(?) And eventually the shadows caught up to her. However I'm not sure how maxwell portal works then or why maxwell can drag people into the constant whenever. Wigfridge and wicker both have paper around them, but warly just gets nay nayed? However a connection between information seems likely for nightmares to transfer worlds. That's my silly little take however.

The only thing that doesn't make sense is the portal from Winona's short, since to my knowledge it still hasn't been written out of the lore that Wagstaff got dragged into the portal there.

The Gestalts could be the complete opposite, maybe only being able to interact with static objects or things naturally formed (like wildlife, which would explain why it can mutate creatures to a much stronger degree and much quicker than the shadows can).

I doubt we'll ever get elaboration on it, due to her being a DLC character and all.  Wanda could be using the clocks the same way she does in the game, forcing the shadows to record her existence so she can rewind whenever she wants, which is why They seem to have a particular distaste towards her, along with the supposed deal she slipped out of that's implied through her dialogue.

I think it was trying to either intimidate Wagstaff or was trying to take the reel back so no one would know about Maxwell's show.  It leaving traces of the Constant could be caused by the residue of shadow magic or it did it on purpose to try tempting him into the Constant eventually.
