Ocean biomes and how to tell them apart

Recommended Posts

I've been working on the Ocean page of the Wiki, DST section, and I need some help.

https://dontstarve.fandom.com/wiki/Ocean#Don't_Starve_Together

It says there are 4 levels of ocean:

  • Coastal
  • Swell
  • Rough
  • Hazardous

I can tell Coastal (flat waves) and Swell (little waves), and then I can see some big waves, but can't tell Rough from Hazardous.  Do they actually look different?  Also, I think they cut anchor raising and lowering times in half, so 8 seconds should be 4 and 10 should be 5.  Any other help would be appreciated.

Pretty sure this is Rough:

Pretty sure this is Hazardous because it takes me 5 seconds to drop/raise anchor here instead of 4:

The waves don't look any different to me.  Do they just look identical and have different distributions of stuff?  Or is there more to it.  I'm taking these screenshots in autumn in daytime, with full sanity.  The little glow at the bottom is because I'm playing as WX-78 with the lightbulb module.

I think they look more or less the same, it's just that hazardous water has naturally-generated boat fragments (and I think dandy lionfish only spawn there?) and little to no sea stacks.

I'm not sure if rough and hazardous look any different. I'm pretty sure you can tell them apart from the ocean detritus that spawns. For example, I'm fairly certain that the floating boat wreckage only spawns in hazardous ocean.

Dandy Lionfish spawn there *more often* then they spawn in the Rough, so they aren't a totally reliable indicator.  Timing the anchor may be the only way to know for sure.  Not sure it matters much for gameplay.

Strange that it doesn't appear the same in your screenshot as it does for me in-game, but I can generally tell 'Hazardous' easily apart because it sports darker reds/browns for its coloring!

Ah, it's a SET PIECE  I think I get it now.  Not sure if such a small area counts as a biome, but I can deal, even if it does.

And you can find one by (or 4 or 5)

c_gonext("boatfragment03")

OMG, you are such a Willow: lighter out, burning all the boat fragments.  :D

Thank you all, especially @Hornete and @-Variant.  Once the two of you pointed this out and I thought about it for a while, I could see that the Wiki was technically correct, although the colors and textures have changed a bit over the years.  It even had a good image down in the gallery at the bottom that I hadn't noticed.  Thanks to your help, I was able to fix the wiki to be clearer and more obvious.

Boat fragments can spawn anywhere on the ocean at any time, but groupings of them are created with the world and it's those groupings in dark reddish water that are the Hazardous Ocean mini-biome/set-piece.

LOL I didn't even realize I had done it until after I sent the picture. It's such a built-in-habit of mine at this point. Would you believe me if I said she was my main? Ahaha.
Glad it see it helped though!!

I think hazardous is slightly redder like there's been fish feeding recently. I still don't understand why it's hazardous if there's little to no hazards there. I would have loved a bit more fleshing out on that area.

I assume the boat fragments are the remains from a previous "hazard".  Yeah, it feels unfinished as a biome and grandiose as a set piece.
