He has a spell that makes nm fuel extremely easy to farm without needing to go insane.  Unlike combustion which costs 4 embers significantly cutting back its returns, Max only needs 1/5th of a nm fuel so even if he only turns 1 mob to shadow form he is profiting.  He can casually farm nm fuel easily as he plays.

i've already mentioned farming splumonkeys using it

you still need to go to ruins, gather as many monkeys as you can during nightmare phase and stay there until duelists kill them so no, you can get a lot of it easily but the point was that you don't get it passively and you need to intentionally farm it

that's weird to say because willow can spend 1% of a lighter's durability and get profit by getting one ember too

Bunnys give NM fuel when you use the shadow sneak on em. The little ones. I usually just go to the mini savanah and trap 3 at a time to get like 20+ easy fuel early on

I find that even with only 1 stack of embers it's usually enough for day to day use, and that even after I use lighter as main light source and fireball spells every chance I get. The only time you need large amount of embers that I can remotely think of is for bee queen, so just go to your local bee biome and start genociding. There are so many bees you can easily make a profit from combustion. And if that's still not enough, basilisk is also a good choice.
