Wormwood best skill trees for early/mid/late game + specific strategies.

Recommended Posts

I'd like to know what you guys usually pursue on wormwood and his skill tree for early/mid/late game. Plus an early Bee Queen kill and fuelweaver by day 40ish since I can't change the skill tree that early from the portal.

Also feel free to share some strategies on topics like early wraps, permanent blooming, ruins rushing and bramble trap setups (if necessary).

I'll complement whatever you guys share with a quote so we can min/max the green boy to oblivion.(Maxwell still mogs everyone unfortunately)

I use this always. I don't see much point in switching perks depending on where you are, especially with Wormwood. The ipecaca syrup is just so I can get the bulbous lightbug perk, I never craft it. Most of the perks in the topright branch are also just to get the final perk and not really used.

This is exactly mine for early game except for a slight change in the bottom-right section. I don't use Shade Plant until late but Flower Power instead.

As for the ipecaca, I really don't know what the fuzz is all about too. I think is very overrated. One single ruins rush will give me acces to the mud biome. Then with one trip I can get 200 lightbulbs in less then a day, feed 4 monster meat to 2 pigs and boom, wraps for 100 days by day 10. Also 1 trip to the mosaic should grant enough nitre from my perspective, and I've been having great succes managing the time spent on it since these are places I usually would be at with any other character anyway (I mainly play wes and wendy).

Although it might seems redundant to farm for Compost Wraps if you're going for an early Bee Queen, I think the jellybeans are not really THAT good early. I usually kill her only for the Bundling Wraps until I get the bearber bin. And the Compost Wraps are superior also because I can't bloom that easily before some reliable growth formula. But if I can't get it as early as that or I simply don't find the time to, I can always take the easy route and get gloomer for a more casual playstyle. But I'll be missing some days of bloom cause of the goop spawn rate and I don't think farming for fish is necessary as it's just a waste of time (most of the time)

If I want a slow pace gameplay I would do this one instead

It's a pain missing on the bramble dps but the photosyntesis is just 10x better on farming early living logs on-the-go while clearing surface and caves spiders, as well as pigs and bunnymen for a smooth late-game which I only do on multiplayer since all of my friends rush ruins for me anyways. So giving the logs to them by the mud biome.and coming back with the bulbs makes the perk shine on the long run. I even find myself having full health for too long on times, which is good pre-bosses.

Late game I use this one always :

Since I'll be switching the bramble husk for brightshade gear, it serves no practical purpose on the long run. The ipecaca is traded with the sappling cause why not, and the farming one is put back once I decide to actually farm which is kinda pointless for him but would be good if you have a warly, so maintenance on farms would be prefered. I cannot trade the moon shroom cloud since I kill Bee Queen on spawn for jelly beans and I can already get rid of compost wraps for the growth formula starters. I would get the ipecaca if I was taming a beefalo but I'm a beefalo hater all the way so I don't mind it.

My personal skill tree for early game is

Whole mushroom branch including ipecaca.

Whole crafting branch except for bee kind.

Flower power + photosynthesis (not shade plant, it's irrelevant to me as I'm underground every summer).

Ipecaca is good for blooming on day 2 (compost wrap), where as before waiting for fish to spoil could take until day 5. Having the speed boost as early as possible is something I always strive for as it's important to me early game.

Bee kind is anti-synergistic early game as it makes it harder to get stingers.

Photosynthesis isn't that great but free living logs are free living logs for early game of which I require about 7 (dark sword+ manipulator+bat bat).

What I care about the most early game is to remain as mobile as possible. And speed + small Regen allow for this.

Late game:

Just trade the blooming branch for the enlightening skills, except lightbugs. Instead of lightbugs go for bee kind.

Bee kind for free honey.

Lightbugs are annoying to maintain and die off unexpectedly.

Husk is still relevant for me on beefalo as it increases it's dmg.

Late game not much matters tbh. Just play with what's most convenient/least amount of maintenance imo.

I always find Pearl straight away so I can pick up the bull kelp on her island and have a ready source growth formula basically from the very beginning.

I also go super hard on honey poultice as my primary source of healing with manure and rot to heal whatever minor chip damage I’ve accumulated. I use tents to mass produce living logs. I don’t think I’ve ever crafted the compost wrap.

I’m apt to build my base in the dragonfly desert because cactus makes for such a great reliable food source, but the mushroom planter skill tree basically overrides that since green mushrooms help with sanity and are as good a crockpot filler as anything else. Moon shrooms also make for a good filler, and they have the added bonus allowing wormwood to stun lock enemies.

I like the dragonfly base idea as the cacti is really op with his bramble early game. But I would base close to it rather than in it since the constant tumbleweeds get on my nerves at some point.

Yeah you should definitely try my strategy for early compost wraps since the item is basically 1/3 of a jellybean and can be used at the same time as one, so you can facetank some bosses with marble suit almost as good as a wigfrid. But I rarely run the issue of sanity/healing and most of the time stay full at all times, so for me the idea of it slowly ramping up makes up for my playstyle.

I should definetly try an early go to the pearl sometime, since the early surface exploration makes for a lot of pots to spawn on shallow water. But I don't see myself having any problem managing full bloom at all times anyway. And I have yet to try crafting more honey poultice, I simply don't use them. I usually have all spiders cleared by around day 100 on surface and caves, so spider glands are way more than enough without even going my way out of it.

You should use the left lunar side early game, and then use the moon rock idol to reset your skills to the right side lunar late game. Planar insights serve no purpose until you've defeated celestial champion.

I always get full bloom, and none of the plant crafting appeals to me. There's easier ways to get the plants for every character, and the plants cost too much.

Yeah I had the same idea for the Lightbulbs at first, but then I realized that the photosyntesis healing outcomes the 20 health in winter, and 40 in summer. It makes for way more freedom early game, you can simply not spawn them the same day they expire, reaching late game status much quicker since 2 bulbs practically gives you creative mode while building or exploring. But yeah it's kinda situational.

When playing Wormwood, I like to visit Toadstool in the caves. While I hunt for him, I pick all the lightbulbs I can, usually going for 200+. At least half that I drop on the ground, and then I chop his cap and wait until he spore clouds me. I take the cloud to the bulbs, then run away to let Toadstool despawn. This gives me multiple stacks of rot sooner than anything could've naturally rotted. Any leftover bulbs go to a werepig for manure.

The moon shroom perk, with proper timing and positioning, lets you force Klaus's deer to sleep, which stops him from casting spells.

Inspired by your words, I started a new world only to try that strat. I spent two days without flint and another three days without finding a single gold nugget(the first was found in the caves), said that, I'm completely traumatized, but It works, sadly I couldn't make that into wraps because I only found three normal rocks.

why do you get shade plant instead of bloom 3? do people not use thermals for summer or what?

personally mostly same tree except I don't get syrup and the summons and instead bee kind and bloom 3 instead of shade plant

Thermal stones are great if you're mostly stationary (basework, boat, boss fight) or using snow chester. Outside of those two situations, they're basically worthless. Chester is unreliable and annoying, so I don't use him.

Im surprised to see several ppl using the lightbug skill. I find them completely unusable for anything other than base busywork.

On the overworld they cant keep up with wormwood top speed or beefalo speed and in the caves they instantly get stuck and lost on land borders.

saladmanders while also being a joke r at least fun to watch attack stuff and its nice to have an excuse to farm dragonfruits.
