Okay, so... Why is Shadow Chester created during full moon?

Recommended Posts

There are two opposing forces. The shadows, and the moon. So why does the power of the moon change chester, instead of power of the nightmare fuel?

Ice chester can be transformed during full moon, no problem with that, but shadow chester during full moon doesn't make a lot of sense.

My guess? Real reason: Because the shadow stuff existed in the DS/T universe WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY before the Lunar stuff, and full moons are considered mystical and weird in general, so if anything's gonna transform, that's when it would do it.

Lore reason? No idea. :P

...Notorious

My theory is that stuff like werepigs, shadow chester, pig heads dropping NM fuel, etc is a result of the shadows fighting against the effects of the full moon - the full moon attacks the shadows within these creatures, and they respond by going full-power to resist. Kind of like how the lunar grotto fills with nightmares as a result of the moon encroaching on the caves.

I like to think the shadows are finding a 'shade' to hide behind, like a vampire in the Sun, they get into a 'host' in higher concentrations and stay safe there. Why wouldn't Werepigs drop nightmare fuel however...

Just a relic from the past.

I am sure if you make a suggestion it could be changed in the next update. Would be kinda cool if Chester transformed on a new moon.

Thought it's a possibility too. Also matches other transformations, like pig heads dropping nightmare fuel during full moon, or pigs -> werepigs

Retcon

But headcannon: It could be shadows playing "defense" in a sense.

That actually could justify a lot. If in a future patch, A chance occurs where fullmoons, shadows would actually rebel against the advantageous full moon.

The pig and merm heads do the same and become infused with nightmare fuel.

chester is getting punished by the moon for having nightmare fuel in it and makes it so items in his inventory(which are his organs btw) spoil food faster

The shadow chester has the same properties as Maxwell's "Magician's Chest" which is a Nightmare Fuel dependent structure which uses the power of nightmare fuel. It would not make sense for the moon to give chester the ability to use nightmare fuel's powers imo
