Maxwell is an Ancient Fuelweaver?

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone

Each of us has experience playing Don't Starve or Together. And I've been playing these games for several years now. But only now I noticed one interesting feature that prompted me to write this topic. This is rather an interesting theory, or even a fantasy.

To begin with, let's remember the plot of "don't starve". During the course of the game's plot, we meet Maxwell from time to time. This character is also associated with shadows and nightmares, which endow him with terrible power.
And in the course of the plot, Maxwell visually changes. He's getting worse, or more exhausted from how the nightmares suck the life out of him.

Now let's fast forward to another dark corner of the game called "Atrium". Here we have one of the strongest bosses - Ancient Fuelweaver. As we know, he is very closely associated with shadows and nightmares. And he also has a rather unusual appearance: long arms, short crooked legs, a hunchbacked back

In general, I noticed one small similarity, and I want to share my find with you:

What if there were other hostages of the shadow realm before Maxwell? What if one of them after a while became the Ancient Fuelweaver because of the influence of shadows?
Considering that this boss is called "ancient", his transformation happened quite a long time ago. But I am sure that if Maxwell had sat on the nightmare throne longer, he would have become the new Fuelweaver.

What if it's Maxwell from the future? After all, we know that time travel in DST is real. Wanda has proven this a long time ago. We can probably build such a chain that Maxwell was sent to the past in the future, where he became a Fuel Weaver and guards the ancient gate. Think about it

What do you think about it?

I think is not. It's rather suggested Maxwell might be connected to Cyclum (as Charlie is connected to Metheus). And even that is not proven outside of sone theories.

What we see here I think Maxwell is devoured and misshaped by nightmare fuel and his power. Or getting tired by player getting world by world closer to him. Maybe he was sort-of turning into nightmare creature. When we free him he almost instantly turns to dust, suggesting the only thing that kept him alive was just a Nightmare Throne and mysterious Them.

He has a receding hairline and turns fuel into shadow puppets, so at least in that regard he's an ancient fuelweaver.

Are you saying his hairline is where he takes fuel from and if he keeps this up he'll be bald?

Unfortunately, I don't think this is possible.

Max's quotes hint that he hid the atrium in the shadow pieces himself

Fuelweaver says "Metheus" this is most likely him remembering his name(the atrium restores the skeleton's mind as Maxwell says)

Max's quotes at the ancient murals in the atrium are likely him knowing that Charlie* wants the survivors to defeat fuelweaver to unleash Them.

*Charlie's "shadow half" is most definately Cyclum considering they're both female, the fused Charlie has the tragic torch and as we see in the forge and return of them teaser, that she can manipulate a white energy (like Cyclum's one from the mural) with the tragic torch. This means that the Maxwell rework clip of Charlie being "attacked" by a skeleton was Cyclum. I also find it supportive of this that upon killing fuelweaver you can hear Charlie's night monster screech, likely showing that Cycum is angry at Metheus for ruining the civilisation.

I'd like to add that klei has said there was noone on the nightmare before Maxwell. I usually don't like to use developer statement as evidence because it's not part of the game however this supports Maxwell's line of nothing being there before him except Them.
