Lights out challenge (Worst character to solo, not counting Wes)

Recommended Posts

Wortox (no butterflys, 2x hunger, frequent nightmares)

Wormwood (due to bee boxes and farms being harder to farm)

Warly (due to bee boxes and farms being harder to farm)

maybe Woodie (the only character who can't use infinity full moons + exiting were-forms without food/touch)

Does Woodie turn back into were-form if a full moon never ends?

He doesn't turn back if his form reverts before a normal full moon ends, so I'm curious how that works when the full moon never actually ends.

also, no teleporting anywhere unless using moggles, so say goodbye to easy early game exploration. holy hell, Wortox is hilariously horrible in lights out.

Wortox can teleport via the map.

I think Warly still has enough food types to be sustainable, but his coolest dishes would be a pain to obtain.

I wish Klei tweaked Lights Out a bit, since they proudly present it as a separate game mode in the selection. There is a huge discrepancy between character powers in Lights Out which isn't present in the survival mode.

Wormwood isn't actually affected by Light's Out honestly. I'm currently in a play through and farming isn't all that useful and there are enough alternatives to Poultice that it really isn't that big of a deal either. The constant darkness makes nightmare fuel farming even easier than it already is as Wormwood, the major downside is when you activate the Moonstorm event for permanent full moons, you can't go insane. Which might be a boon if you really want to go tree choppin'.
If i were to pick anyone it would be Wurt but even then, not so much. You'd rely more heavily on Seaweed for food since Farming is so tedious but you have the benefit of gold from the Merm King where as other characters don't due to the Pig King always sleeping.
Wolfgang might also be troublesome since your sanity will always be negative, more so than Wortox, however his damage and rushing Moonstorms will probably circumvent this.
Warly is also rough since he actually relies on farming for his unique foods. He can sustain himself off of meaty stews and other healing methods akin to Wormwood but the lack of Onions, Garlic, Peppers, Honey, Toma Roots will make him less fun (You can still obtain them from the Star Staff I know but it lasts a meager 3 days before having to reset so gonna be sitting at base twiddling your thumbs a lot)

if anyone can farm in a lights out world, it's Wurt, since she can give fish to merm king in exchange for seeds, often crop specific ones. light up a dwarf star and you've got everything you need.

...not that it's necessarily a good idea, mind you, but it is indeed possible.

He transforms once, then stays human indefinitely until you change shards (every time you leave caves, you transform. It's awful).

Agreed, he'd probably have to rely more on sea food, and once he killed shadow pieces he can keep a permanent reanimated skeleton for permanent and mostly free glowberry mousse. That would be the most you can probably make of him, that I can think of.

But you always can go insane in the caves, so it's fine. Wormwood is actually decent in lights out, even without a beefalo you can abuse sleeping for early game healing while making living logs, and for boss fights he can stockpile salves. And he can easily upkeep a mushroom farm for food.

Agreed! I did try using Wurt in lights out. She's hard in the early game, but once you've sort of established yourself on a desert (to be able to eat Cactii which grows all year long) and made the merm king, it all sort of becomes downhill.
Things get even easier once you get access to a dwarf star, kelp and/or stonefruits, and her late game is better than most of the other characters

Spoiler

- You have easy access to farm seeds
- You have a reliable access to gold
- Your minions are always available at night. So is the merm king.
- Merm wars make a ton of fish, which you can trade for seeds, and with a high enough merm warrior army, you get so many seeds that you can even eat seeds only if you want to.
- Your merms can auto farm bee queen granting you easier access to healing.
- The merm king boosts your sanity enough so it takes longer for you to become insane. Paired with the fish sanity bonus, means you can control your sanity better than most, both in early and late game.
- The ocean exploration and ocean accidents in the darkness are less problematic for her.

The ones I tried in lights out that were horrible to me, were

  • Woodie: despite having nightvision your wereforms will damage your sanity so often that I was insane all the time and I kept getting sniped by terrorbeaks when de-transforming
  • Wortox: perma insanity, I kept eating cactii and even so it wouldn't last long. It was boring mostly, a never ending fight against nightmares.
  • Webber: Webber is a double edged sword, despite having permanent access to his minions, and supreme healing and tankiness once you get access to nurses, he has a tiny sanity pool, which was pretty hard to keep up.  Despite leaving insanity faster than Wortox (and having more resources for it, like sleeping in a den after eating monster meat) it was a permanent nuisance.
  • Wickerbottom: In theory Wicker could be good in lights out, she has several books that counter things of lights out, (moon book, faster food access, easy access to birds as soon as winter hits, etc). In reality she's the opposite of Webber, she has a huge sanity pool and filling it up proved up to be a challenge, the black feather to make the library is really hard and RNG dependent to obtain, seeds for the books are very RNG dependent to obtain, etc. My early game was always such a disaster that I stopped playing her altogether in lights out.
I guess if I could somehow move to the moon island with enough resources, things would be easier in the late game, but I never manage to get the black feather for the library before things become a mess.

Wickerbottom: you can get black feathers from buzzers, tumbleweeds, catcoons (friendly), penguins

Wortox: Lunar island/caves could negate some of those issues since Wortox can teleport all over the map with bunnyman + spider farm stations, Bee Queen Crown/Bone Helmet/Tam/Banana Shakes (33 --> 16.5) will greatly help

Webber: Lunar trick might not work out (no teleport to make up bad WG) but has perma-tier 3 dens and doesn't have -50% food absorption

Woodie: I don't have really anything to counter, maybe always be full sanity before then de-transform as quickly as possible till you get forever moon event/only transform in Lunar biome (minus were-goose)

I'm gonna do it as Wortox, so my prospective

(High-Hunger meals) - Meatballs give 32 hunger which is better than meat stews as you can use forget-me lot petals as filler and not as much meat

(High-Sanity meals) - Soothing tea gives 37 sanity meaning Wortox can eat 7 souls to break even as each soul cost -5 sanity

Wortox (imo) basing in the lunar caves so I mitigated sanity issue, eat all the blue mushrooms for health + hunger, infinity light, living logs, nightmare fuel, ruins loot, avocado bushes - Wortox can teleport back 'n' forth from lunar caves to ruins

Wortox could build a U shape walls with a line of marble statues to make a box shape (ice-flingo in the center), Wortox could attract bunnymen, teleport in the box and then light the grass tufts under the bunny's for easy souls (could work on hounds)

Bunny-men + spider farms can souls and be place at prime locations, Catch bugs for stored souls (like butterflies, bees, light-bugs)

Wortox can still use rock lobsters could kill all bosses in caves, (spider-hat) spiders for shadow pieces/antlion, tree-guards for bearger/deer-clops, eye of terror for raid bosses, killer bees for crab king

I'm not sure what I could use the soul echo for - maybe use less boats to get to islands
