Spammers often do this to bypass moderation, so it doesn't really matter how old the thread is or hold old the account is unfortunately. I don't even know specifically what behavior it is, it's part of some proprietary spam protection system built into the forums. It doesn't happen very often but when it does, I have noticed that there tends to be a lot of links/images involved.
