How does Modding affect the development aspect of dst.

Recommended Posts

This is  something that probably has come up for discussion for the development team.  Like the Community workshop of DST has lots of Quality of life changes. So many that even some make it into the base game. Primarily I'm thinking like flingo range indicators.
Or even  pseudo Global positions With the compass.

Klei already says outright that they want to focus on development .
So, why not look into the workshop and see what would fit within the style of the game. Or even have like a creators event?
Showcase What love is put into the game by the community.
So I have this Question
Being part of the development team how does one approach these Ideas that have been made with modding and why not attempt to bring some of the content of modding Into the base game? Stuff that would make sense and is non invasive.

And anything that would be a big thing can be tested by players in a community event?
I wanna see more for this game. And Im sure the community would love to get more involved as the game grows.
Klei you don't need to be alone in development. Lets help each other out as player to creator.

Can even have like custom Unique items Like how the timeless collection exists can Make a Community collection.

Does it comform to the idea of what the developers had in mind for their game? Yes -> Add it

Does it not comform to the idea of what the developers had in mind for their game? No -> don't add it

You have answered that yourself here:

I don't see klei doing a community event for a few reasons

a) It takes time from the devs who could be working on what they already have planned

b) AFAIK when Klei takes community feeback it's for their betas, something they made themselves, in advance, sometimes even knowing there'll be balance issues, that's where we come in. It's never something big like a design, but rather on the balance side. And even then, they may or may not do what the community suggests, but having a second opinion can be good for the balance team.

It's not our job to decide what should be or shouldn't be added. But we are free to add whatever we want into our own games, that's the nice part about modding.

I like to think that if Klei adds something it's because it'll be liked and approved by the majority. Problem is, you can't get everyone to vote or give feedback on a community event. You will most likely get a small sample of feedback, mostly from forum users, which won't reflect what everyone would prefer.

Its certainly a different mindset for development.  And klei did ask for us to provide feedback on how they design.

and the steam workshop does show whats the most popular mods. Just a simple look through wouldn't bee too hard and its not like klei needs to really do anything.
All they got to do is announce it and Let people go to work.

There are mods that can quickly be added that I don't think people would dislike. Like on status Is one that can be added that adds in a bit more information.
and the player can determine if they want that extra information.

or even like Geo Placement for controllers It would make the players be able to do what they want more of.  Without really drastically changing the game.

you are approaching this topic with the idea behind team fortress 2 and csgo's life support models.

Not only this is inapplicable to the sandbox and rpg nature of don't starve, but the game is clearly still in full development to this day.

A community event requires a lot time and resource preparation which would be even more work with the game's monthly updates.

A lot of the popular mods are usually things that just give ingame information: mob healthbars, range info; or things that players use to have an easier time: global position, crockpot visualizer, revival access; so I could see why the devs are not willing to add them into the game.

It’s basically suggestions but with extra steps in a way that for the handful of times it happened was always followed by a popular demand of the very thing all around the community outside of Zarklord infecting DST with Gemcore features :distracted: So I’d say what is observed is that the ideas matter more than them having a mod behind or not and that is close to what I remember Klei mentioning once when it comes to stuff like Geometric Placement being quite a consequent and handy tool will then leave them the responsibility of maintaining the mod code to their future changes so it’s already an investment if they just take it altogether or decide to take the time to make it at their own sauce, meaning it might just happen but if GP takes that long to be a feature so console players and vanilla overlords can finally enjoy it then having more concepts (backed with mods that are willingly handing over their creation) would only delay so much more the development or make the massive investment of switching to a different model with the game updates which might not be as effective for their business. At least it just makes sense to me that way from the few elements I gathered.

Well yeah not all of them of course.  The devs have addeded them kind of in their own ways though. Compass being global positions.
Cookbook being crockpot recipe.
They straight up added flingo range because before you could only check flingo range when you were placing  the flingo. Klei has their own ways of working things out.
and most of these would just be like a quality of life update that they have done before.
But the thing is Mods exist for pc players. However they don't exist for console players.  Which actually make up a decent chunk of players.  So adding features in like what occurs in mods could be much better for those players that don't have access to them.

There are some tweaks I wish went the way of Quick Drop, like pausing the unused server in solo worlds or improving the controls in miscellaneous ways. But they've been pretty good about providing alternate solutions with the QOL updates so far so I think they'll get around to most of them.
