Hi there, i need base help

Recommended Posts

You should base near important resources that can't be moved, like pig king, reeds, cave entrances, deserts, walrus camps (but obviously not close enough for them to wander to your base), not just in the center of the world. Basing near wormholes is also not just for the sake of it, they need to lead to some important locations like the ones mentioned above or boss spawns, and if the connected wormholes are too close, they're useless.

I recommend basing close to one or several points of interest on the map. So something like around pigking, maybe close to the moonstone [thought its a bit more of a specific niche], or just some good wormholes.

A popular base location is also the oasis because of wildfire protection, but thats usually off in some corner of the map and has sandstorms so if you dont want to deal with flingomatics I recommend either just turning off wildfires, if youre comfortable with that, or basing just below a sinkhole in the caves, though you might want a way to deal with the sanity drain down there first.

Other than that the only real no-goes in terms of base locations are biomes that are closeby to meteor fields, recognizable by the moon rock boulders. Unless you want meteors randomly raining down on you, in which case... interesting challenge run.

I don't think there are any "musts" for a base location. Depending on what you're doing you might not even want a typical base location and might value something like a large open area more than one with immovable resources.

I also don't think the pig king is a very important resource. He's technically immovable, but each time you visit him he can give you enough gold to last a few years, and giving gold is all he does. Definitely worth considering as a bonus but I wouldn't base somewhere just because it's near him.

Basing next to the portal is too nice late game for fast character swapping. It's also usually near the center of the map, so if you base there you can be sure you're not basing directly opposite of key areas like Lunar or Pearl Island. Honestly if you're playing without wildfires it's a no-brainer. And even if you have wildfires, it's a good spot to hang out during the first year when you're going to be exploring almost every biome on the map. You also just spawn there, so you will never have to worry about finding it first before you can start your base. I have one world where I based in the desert, which happened to be far away from the portal. I definitely regret having to travel a long distance every time I want to switch characters, which is quite often.

Having the sinkhole nearby that's closest to the muddy biome is always a major bonus. Probably one of the more important factors, though it's worldgen dependent and it's not a dealbreaker.

Pig King like said above is totally irrelevant. The Moon Stone is nice lategame if you plan to farm moon rocks, especially with permanent moonstorms active. Reeds are no longer essential to have nearby, neither are cacti even (due to banana bushes and banana shake).

Wormholes are nice, but they're unreliable and I see them as a bonus. If there are any good ones sort of close to the portal, great. If not, it's whatever. They don't per se have to lead exactly to the right biomes, even if they can save you substantial travel time they can be very worth it. But they also drain sanity which is kind of a drag lategame when wearing an enlightened crown and wanting to keep your sanity maxed out. It's very important to jump into them early game, provided you're not making yourself insane before you have a weapon and armor for nightmare creatures. They're extremely useful for getting a sense of how your world is layed out, even if you just jump in briefly to take a quick look and then return.
