Warly Should Be More Worthy Of Long-term Play

Recommended Posts

Warly is one of the strongest support characters in DTS, and powerful special dishes can provide a huge boost to the whole team. But very few people actually play Warly for long. Because Warly's weaknesses and strengths are separate, you can have 90% of his strengths without experiencing his weaknesses at all. Just swap Warly out when you've got enough ingredients, and then switch Warly out when you've prepared his special dish, and you can completely avoid Warly's early recovery and slow development. It's not fair to Warly. Warly deserves to be played for a long time.

Ok, here are some of Warly's suggestions.

Modification Ideas:

  •  Warly will still not be a selfish character. Warly's food will still be available for others to eat, but Warly will get a greater benefit from it.
  •  Warly's ability to cook should be stronger, and not be completely dependent on special dishes. Warly makes it easier to cook, and chef's specials are easier to prepare.
  • Slightly reduce the difficulty of Warly's early development, improve the significance of Warly's early selection of the game.

Specific Modification Scheme:

1.Initial Items

Spoiler

Warly's initial item adds one pepper and one onion to the one garlic and two potatoes.

This was very important to Warly. The main crops Warly needed were garlic, peppers, and onions. In the early stage of the game, the probability of getting peppers and onions by planting and breeding is very low. It can take as little as six or seven days, and as many as ten days, which takes a lot of time but the profit is very low. And in winter, peppers and onions grow more slowly because they are out of season, making them harder to mass-produce.

A 1:1:1 pepper, onion, and garlic plant is the optimal ratio that does not require fertilization. If Warly can plant one pepper, one onion, and one garlic seed at the beginning, he will be able to produce all three giant crops by the time the second crop is mature, and then giant production will be much easier.

2.Chef Pouch

Spoiler

Warly's Chef pouch will have ten slots, but will only store food or Warly's own items (including three portable kitchenware and all spices).

This alleviates Warly's lack of a backpack slot without disrupting the balance of backpack items.Warly's picky food restrictions mean that he has to carry dishes or ingredients and a pot with him when he travels, and he has to carry three or four different dishes when he fights, leaving Warly with about three to six fewer stores than the other characters.

The Chef pouch was also used relatively infrequently, so this modification allows the Warly to use the chef pouch for more storage, and it doesn't allow other characters to completely replace a backpack with a chef pouch (since they can't store anything other than food in it).

3.Portable Crock Pot

Spoiler

(1) The portable crock pot has a cooking time of 50% instead of 80%.

Warly needs to cook faster, cooking large amounts of food quickly for his teammates in order to act as the team chef. Warly often cooks outside and needs to cook faster to reduce waiting time.

(2) Portable crock pot can be filled with only three ingredients for cooking.

This would be an interesting design, so that the last slot of the portable crock pot would be able to start cooking without putting anything in it, and then cook something when the ingredients are ready for the cooking.

For example, if the cooking a meaty stew usually put two meat ,a monster meat and one berry, but use a portable crock pot do meaty stew into two meats only a monster meat can start cooking meat , do not need to put in berries as a filler(portable crock pot , of course, there are still four slot, Warly still can use four ingredients for a dish as usual).

4.Spice

Spoiler

(1) Warly has a better effect on speiced food than any other character.

It's like Wendy getting 40% more of Abigail's damage buff than any other character, so Warly, as the spice maker, gets twice the effect of the spice buff from the spiced recipe (the spice buff still lasts 4 minutes).

  • Spicy dish: Other characters get 20% bonus damage, Warly gets 40%.

  • Garlic dish: Other characters get 33% extra damage reduction, Warly gets 50%.

  • Sweet dish: Other characters get 100%    extra work efficiency, Warly gets 200%.

(2) Enhance the function of Salty dish.

  • Salty dish decays at half its original rate.

  • Other characters recover 25% more health, sanity and hunger after eating salty dish, and Warly 50% more.

Salt, which is difficult to obtain and difficult to produce in the same quantities as other ingredients for spices, should be more effective than it is today, and salt itself has the effect of extending the shelf life of food.

(3) Add a new kelp spice.

  • Made from three dried kelps, which can be used in umami dishes.

  • Other players get 15% speed up while Warly gets 30% speed up. The duration is also 4 minutes.

The movement speed buff is more everyday and more versatile than the attack defense and work efficiency buff, so it's more expensive, which makes sense for Warly to stick around and supplement the cuisine.

The reason for choosing dried kelp as raw material is that, like honey, pepper and garlic, it can be mass-produced after a certain initial investment (finding bull kelp stalks and building some drying racks).

5.chef's special

Spoiler

(1) Warly can get a longer buff from special dishes.

Warly's buff lasts 2.4 times longer when he eats his special dish than any other character. The buff lasted 1.5 days after Warly ate hot dragon chili salad, asparagazpacho, fish cordon bleu and volt goat chaud-froid, and 4.8 days after Warly ate glow berry mousse.

After the WX78 and Wickerbottom  reworks, ignoring cold, heat, humidity, and darkness is not a very rare ability anymore. Warly can also acquire these abilities, but they are short-lived, making them less useful.

(2) Adjust recipes and attributes of existing chef's specials.

Of the chef's specials, only a few dishes with special effects are often prepared, and other chef's specials are rarely prepared. This is mainly because the recipes they require are too demanding, but their attributes are not worth Warly's regular cook. If chef's specials have high stats or good value, then more players will choose to have Warly cook for their teammates all the time.

  • Moqueca
    Spoiler

      Food attributes unchanged
      Recipe changed to fish>=0.25, tomatoes>=1 or onions>=1.

The original chowder was made with one fish, one onion and one tomato. It's too harsh. Tomatoes and onions don't have a good planting proportion, and fish and tomatoes have a short shelf life, so when you have fish and Onions, you have to grow the tomatoes to make this dish, and by the time the tomatoes come out, the fish will have rotted, so Warly has a hard time getting them together. The need for three different ingredients also limits the dish to being made on base. Wouldn't it be better if the recipe was either tomato or onion?

  • Bone Bouillon
    Spoiler

Food attributes changed to healthy=32, sanity=15, hunger =150.
      Recipe changed to bone shards>=2.

To remove the onion from bone bouillon recipe, so Warly can break through skelon has tow bone shards directly to make this dish, can also be teammates for him to do it immediately after the resurrection. It should be better at restoring SAN properties, otherwise bone bouillon only restores 20 more health than meaty stew, but requires rarer recipes and longer crafting times.

  • Puffed potato souffle
    Spoiler

Food attributes changed to healthy=20, sanity=33, hunger =25.
      Recipe changed to potatoes>=1, eggs>=1.

The original recipe is completely crushed with creamy potato puree and fancy spiralled tubers. If Warly has two potatoes and wants to restore SAN, why not make creamy potato puree that restore SAN more and have a longer shelf life? Potatoes and garlic are also planted in a 1:2 ratio. OK, you really don't have any garlic, but why don't you make two fancy spiralled tubers, which will still bring back twice the SAN value of this dish. If the plan is modified this way, when Warly has two potatoes, Warly will cook the dish instead of creamy mashed potatoes.

  • Fresh fruit crepes

    Spoiler

Food attributes changed to healthy=60, sanity=50, hunger =150.
      Recipe changed to butter>=1, fruit>=1.5.

I'm not sure anyone would actually make it out of practicality. If you have a butter, why not just eat it instead of making this dish, just to get 20 more health and 125 more satiety. Not to mention, in order to make this dish you have to have a big fruit, which means you have to farm fruit or shoot a depths worm or splumonkey. Leave the honey out of the recipe and make it with three berries if you have more room for fruit. It makes sense that a dish made of the most difficult and rare ingredients should have the highest quality

  • Grim galette

    剧情透露

      Food attributes unchanged
Recipe changed to nightmare flue>=2, potatoes>=1 or onions>=1.

Like the moqueca, the recipe is a bit harsh. When you have Onions, you don't always have potatoes. It's better to choose between the two for a while.

(3)Add some cost-effective chef's specials

Just as Wigfid was able to make cost-effective hair and weapons, so chefs can make more simple and cheap dishes with good attributes and recipes. Also, cooks should be able to make food from a wider variety of ingredients, such as pomegranates, durians, drumsticks, carrots, mushrooms and so on.

For example, two mushrooms can be used to make a more satiating vegetarian dish, feeding Walter or training beefalo.

Hopefully Wally's character will be more interesting and more like a chef instead like a buff dealer.

Amazing Design!!

Of course he is a TALENTED COOK, there should be a way for him to cook differently to prove that.

Makes it more friendly for Warly players to start, like it~

Nice, The need of dried kelp makes it difficult to obtain in batches.

Your words above is mostly to improve the experience of Warly players.

Another point is that Warly should be often needed, like Wickbottom.

For example:

  •    Buffed food cannot be stored in the wrap but with longer shelf life

As someone who has played Warly for thousands of days I think he's one of the strongest characters for solo play. I also appreciate that many of his perks (ie. spiced foods) take more time to unlock because they provide for lots of long-term goals in a world.

That said I fully support many of the tweaks you are suggesting, and it makes sense that Warly should benefit more from his foods/spices than other players. The amount of benefit would probably need to be tuned down from what you suggested for balance purposes but the concepts themselves are solid, especially the idea of three food slots for the portable cookpot. The only idea that I would shy away from is the kelp spice. 30% speed boost would be massively overpowered; even a 15% speed boost can be more powerful than a 20% damage boost. The food recipe tweaks might also be too powerful.

tl;dr - I definitely hope Warly gets a look-over in a future update and I really like some of these proposed changes to his character mechanics. Not so much the recipe and spice buffs.

As interesting in the book Warly is and it's nice that he has progression but he haven't had a QoL worthy like Wortox had for longer term and general surviving. He's very... bland to play as long term, his food doesn't feel like gives much benefit to him rather it giving to everyone else. Getting variety of complex ingredients takes time and effort and most of us usually just chug meatballs and pierogi for the rest of our lives.

I'm a dirty bluecap chugger myself when it comes to healing, but needing to rotate meals every so often just to keep up healing is a mess personally. Getting salves is a slow and tedious process early when trying to rush something and it's not any easier when you don't have eggs early and you needing to rush pierogi which won't do well alone. Bat bat's the only safest-ish healing for him which is basically Wormwood situation on the whole matter of restoration.

My only contribution in suggestion in this thread is maybe make him gain less hunger for doing same meals over and over again but keep full healing till he cannot eat anything. Him being more hungry character than Winona would make more sense and generally having sustain benefits more than hunger wise for him maybe would do good enough?

I like the ideas, I would add an other one: warly should have special dishes for the mob you can befriend extending the loyalty duration: « carots salad » for rabbitmen, « confiture aux cochons » (French espression) for pigmen, « durian cake » for merms.

And the spices added to those dishes would also be extended.

I think cooking for mob is a very cool perk! He could even have a special dish that when feed to Beefalo it would raise additional obedience by 40% or something. Just a chef spreading love to every creature.

If he needs cooking perk it would be nice if food made could have one or two or all of those bonuses

  1. Food he cooks would be slightly more effective, 20% could be noticeable like pierogi instead of providing 40HP 37.5H  5S it would provide 50HP 45H 6S. This would make people prefer Warly to cook for them.
  2. Food he cooks would be always 100% fresh despite ingredient freshness and last longer. Lasting longer so it's worth to cook more for later so warly who cooks for mob can take longer breaks from it.
  3. His honey spice could apply to more things like oar or hoe. It applying to hoe would be great since good dishes are locked behind farming and most of the time people won't just do it for you.

Space for kitchenware in his pouch is gud.
