Do merms speak English

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone so did you think merms speak English a little.Well no the king is the only one that speaks English

So basically you’ve seen merms speaking English but no Wurt can only see them speaking English merms made there own language no one else will know what a  merm is saying .Wurt players are the only ones that see.Because with my friend I was befriending merms my merms were speaking English but one when I say on his screen merms Were speaking gibberish i asked him that this was happening we we’re both surprised !
However other characters can understand merm king so that means merms speak a little English

So the king speaks English but not the warriors and the people

So the whole time wurt had an hidden perk

can understand merms

I don't feel like it was exactly hidden, its just that nobody really paid any mind to it. Its cool and character immersive, but not something you would talk about

Tbf it took me a long time to realize this too despite being a wurt main and lots of people I've played with have found this interesting when pointed out it even has lore implications with Wurt as it implies Wurt actually is teaching other merms another subtle change is some of their dialogue changes when a king is alive.

Klei just forgot to add untranslated merm quotes to merm king. It's not that deep.

There is a theory that the merm king has some sort of power similar to the Gnaw from the gorge event, in the gorge we could see merms not being dumb and aggressive and speaking English because the Gnaw allowed them to keep their minds intact so they could continue cooking for him.

In game the merm king demands food non-stop and his presence makes merms around the world become neutral in relation to others and it can be a hint that they come to reason again. Some even say that the king is the Elder Pig from the event turned into a merm that found his way into the Constant because he was a leader to the swamp pigs and looks very much like the merm king we have now.

i think merms can be smart, just that they're naturally feral and forgot their past lives due to the actual merm plague in later stages

Considering kiel said Wurt was not a goat and the in game lore says merms were one of the first things in the constant I feel like while some merms are from the plague the origin of merms isn't the plague we've already seen multiple creatures changed into different states so I find is silly to have it merms were never their own race but a mix of others.

or merms can just procreate with each other which would explain everything.

Not really that only explains how they would continue to exist if the gnaw ever gets destoryed and wurt I guess.

If we have no other evidence then I think it's safe to assume gnaw is the origin of merms, it's a god of the constant and just like Alter and the shadow eye it changes how creatures look ect. So the only mystery is ...

Can't really say it's safe as it leaves too much to assumption not that mine are any better but if the gnaw is the only main origin and how do we explain the merm variants like tropical merms, merm guards, and fishermerms people seem to believe that merm guards are goats but there's actually no evidence to support this other than they both have horns and there were goats in the gorge but then why are goats the only species to keep a racial feature after having fully transformed why does the king's well being have such a drastic impact on their bodies how come a merm guard can't become a king and so much more. Personally my theory is that merms with proper names are converted merms or their ancestors while merms with more gibberish names are natural merms

From what I remember a lot of people were saying she was a former goat due to her horns but a dev deconfirmed it I could be wrong tho I'll be the first to admit my memory isn't the best and it's been a bit of time since Wurt's release.

There quotes don’t change I exactly know it

But if that’s what you think ok you could say that

Check their fear quotes for normal merms during a boss fight they have multiple quotes they can say but the pool of quotes they say are different depending on whether the king is alive or not.
