DST problem search servers with ??? ping and no country filter kill the game! this needs correction!

Recommended Posts

Recently I've seen that many servers that are good at connecting and ping just aren't shown to me because their pings show **???** and instead a lot of high ping servers show up in the list, another problem is that they don't there is an effective filter that bypasses this problem like a language or nation or even region filter!

Why show me servers from japan, china (I think) and Australia before good servers if I live in BRAZIL??? it makes no sense!

I also saw several posts talking about it, some more than 2 years old!

Like this one here: https://forums.kleientertainment.com/forums/topic/127076-the-ping-issue-personal-and-dedicated-servers/

I already faced this problem as a player for a long time, whenever I go to look for a server, either I play on already established servers or I don't play on servers because few "playable" servers by ping are available

I did a quick account and realized that only 19 servers are available in my region (Brazil) and of those 19
only 9 are really "playable" removing official klei servers and gorge or forge mode because I hardly play these modes!
klei servers I usually don't play because their names say" **south america** which can end up with me playing alone and being ignored by everyone on the server who speaks spanish and not portuguese and who thinks I'm using the server inconveniently after all brazil has many servers with the tag [BR] in the name.

in my opinion, what is a "playable" server? answer: it is a server that does not present above 60ms of ping and its connection is stable, and the online members speak my language.

finally I think this "kills" the experience of many players and server owners who want to be found, and apparently there is no exact solution on the client side or server owner!

Yes, I completely agree. I missed the klei dedicated servers in my region (Europe) because of their "???" ping. It was game changer when I discovered by chance they existed. Klei need to fix this

Recent server change makes most if not all pub servers ping almost always show up as "???" for me.

Yet i get no latency when ingame on these servers as long as i pick the one from my area.

But i prefer being able to see server pings before joining instead taking a "leap of faith" :<

Yep, by now this is an old issue, apparently ignored by KLei probably on account of not many complaining about it - since majority of forumers here, according to past polls, solely play alone on personal private servers. And probably the ones that do encounter it, don't know where and how to underline such issue, given no observable error is generated to point at. As with my post from over 1 year ago you exemplified, OP, now many servers in my region are plagued by this "???" faulty ping estimation problem (although, in truth, connectivity is good) plus almost all of my DST-playing friends have it. Is game-breaking in the sense all servers crippled by "???" are relegated to server list's bottom, with no-one joining them, forever "ghost towns" admins pay and set-up for nothing in the end. Even if not solving, KLei at least could add regional cataloging par example, for such pubs not be dumped in a background sea of "???" servers everyone ignores.

This is an old question, DST has always been notorious for poor internet connections here. It may be the reason of the network operator. The host server delay of all Chinese players will be displayed as "???", and p2p transmission cannot be used, so the data must be forwarded through the Klei server in Canada when online, resulting in most players online. time has terrible delays. Forcing players to buy cloud servers to enjoy the game. Or force play Dont Starve TOGETHER as Don't Starve ALONE.

As can be seen in DST DataViz, the ratio of players and servers in China is much larger than in other regions, not because Chinese people like to play alone, but because many of them are forced to do so.

Seems like a lot of people are stuck with a similar problem, it would be the biggest qol if klei could fix it.

btw I have no relevant network knowledge, these principles are what I heard from others, I am sorry if it is wrong, but the problem of high latency and "???" does exist.

I play in a steam group server more because despite what the ping would say, I get horrible lag sometimes in the klei servers oppose to the ones hosted by someone else

The ??? Are also impossible to gauge, one of them could be exactly the ping you are looking for and offer you no lag or be a china server where you press W and next thing you know you crossed the map as a ghost

guess I've never played the game :pensive:

talking about filters, i want klei to add language filters in workshop
like yes no doubt there are a lot of good and interesting mods on other languages, but when i open workshop all i see are chinese mods that i need to use translator to understand
i don't say that they are bad but it's really kinda annoying when i can't even turn off mods on chinese in search

A server's ping shows as ??? when you send a ping to the server and you don't get a response.
That generally means the port you're pinging isn't open for you to ping, so it would be an issue on the server host's end. Most people aren't going to open their ports if the game works fine without it.

Additionally, the servers that show up first depend on the "ranking" system. An important thing to note in that ranking is if that the server's ping isn't between 0-200, it gets placed with the other low rankings. A ??? ping doesn't fit that criteria, so bottom of the rankings that listing goes.

Maybe putting the info of which ports need to be opened somewhere accessible in-game would make people more likely to do it.

It can be found in your world files at Cluster_X/Master/server.ini as "server_port".
You can get to the cluster folder in-game by pressing the settings icon next to a world and clicking "Open World Folder".

I believe the default port is 10999.
