Is the interest in ocean content still up?

Recommended Posts

In a particular time of this year, klei said that they would like to expand the content the ocean ingame offers, and they did it, for me, succesfully, in the waterlogged update.

This update was my favourite of 2021, the improvements to boats where so good, and the biome is cool aswell.

After that update i supposed DST would get one more ocean update, but then the crossover update released, and it was good, the klei team liked it, most of the community liked it.

But that brings the question; will we still have a ocean related update in the future? It still feels empty and its simply a good place to go deeper into new mechanics and biomes, i would be glad if the klei team hasnt lost their interest in this particular area.

Hopefully yes, Its probably going to take a while until the ocean is on par with the main land and the caves but there are many things that could be done with it, even the addition of different water based biomes to the world could be done, I just think that the ocean mostly need things to do during the year for those who like to stay in the ocean and of course new items and mobs that help with survivability both in land and ocean, so there is a reason to visit it many times.

Lets not pretend theres a whole lot going on in the caves besides the ruins. the archives being added certainly helped make the caves more interesting but its still really barren.

With the release of the recent waterlogged update, it shows that Klei is willing to expand on ocean content due to the rework of the boats alone. Nautical exporation has become a thousand times more enjoyable after the update and I can't think of any other reason for them to incentivise us to get out there than to prepare us for further ocean content. I think that it just take longer to develop for the ocean because of the limitations of mobility that the boat provides us and they have to work around that to make it enjoyable at least. I'm still hoping for additions such as boat reinforcements and faster mast turning to increase QOL of ocean expiration; with that they can do whatever with the ocean (I'm still optimistic about a Crab King rework).

How long have you been here? Like generally asking how long have you played any of Klei’s games??

Because if you answer not very long: then you should check this out-

Watch them from the oldest all the way up to the Newest that’s how much a Klei game changes and has new content added to it over the years.

Each of those trailers shows off new content that prior to that trailer was NOT in the game..

Can you Imagine for example the Beta Build of the Original Don’t Starve Game compared to the build Console players got? Xbox version came with Reign of Giants already being Included as permanent gameplay content where as For PC/PlayStation that was sold separately as a DLC- But wait it gets better: Nintendo recently got in on the Dont Starve Fun: And THAT version of the game came with the Shipwrecked DLC already included.

My point in a TL:DR post- A lot of content was added, changed modified, or removed between Beta DS & its Release recently on Nintendo Switch.

Dont Starve Together will be the same way.

So yes: I 100% expect more ocean content in future updates.. and with the game not even released on Nintendo Switch yet- I doubt we’re going to see Klei just drop DST from getting more updates anytime soon.

Ocean content will continue to be lacklustre until sailing is more integrated to the base game instead of being a side activity. This is true with any content they release. Theres a reason why people love the farming update and why its considered one of the best theyve put out - because they werent afraid to go in and alter the base game with more interesting mechanics.

I want them to go in and totally revamp the basegame.  The mainland should be seperated so that you need to sail to get to other land masses. Beach biomes would be the only place you could launch a boat, swamps should get redesigned to incorporate water, similar to the mangrove biome in shipwrecked, coves could be the ocean equivialant to caves on the mainland and would be flooded crevices you could explore by boat. The moon cycle should have an effect on waves and the ocean ect..

All of that would be more interesting to me than simply adding another ocean biome.

Agree that the best way to make the ocean more interesting is to rework existing content to partake in the gameplay opportunities that an ocean provides.
...two birds with one stone; the mainland needs a facelift anyway.

Honestly, stuff like the Waterlogged and Lunar Grotto biomes have left me spoiled in terms of design; the Archives too, in the way of like...properly incorporating DS's history of puzzles into the game.
I would like to see more of that approach applied to the rest of the game. Present it with enough hype, and updates can be just as interesting as adding something new.

Well my point was not that i thought that klei is just gonna drop their biggest game, i was just wondering if they actually still feel like making content for the ocean.

I hope so. Years ago when they first added the ocean in the very first RoT update they acknowledged the update was small but it was a good foundation for the future. Well fast forward to the future and i feel like we still have that great foundation and we started putting chairs and sofas and tables on it but the walls and the rest of the house are still missing.

Tbh I think this proves that less can be more. I rather have a small content update that is fun, adds to the gameplay loop and feels rewarding, rather than tons of mediocre content that's just... There.

Besides the barren-ness of the caves makes them more atmospheric imo. Kinda like in Skyrim with the boring unsuspecting cave leading to a complex hidden dwarven city.
