Food source in hot asteroid (Desolands)

Recommended Posts

Hi guys,

I am planning to land on a new asteroid however the temperatures there are 35+ (or will be as the temperature will even out with time).

Only creatures there are Dreckos.

I am not sure how to set a sustainable food production there. No plant will grow unless I can build a cooling system and i'm still far away from that (this is the first asteroid where I can get Dreckos or oil for plastic production).

I could try farming Dreckos but will that be enough to sustain a few dupes? It would also take a lot of time to start such production.

There is little available water in neutral temperatures and there is some at high temp next to a steam geyser.

Any ideas on how can I produce food?

You may try Grubfruit if you have found the seed. It can grow up to 50°C. I farm them to feed Experiment 52B because the asteroid usually above 30°C. Have some wild Sweetles or Grubgrubs can help increase the grow rate if you have limited resources.

You need to isolate and cool it down. This is da wae!

Hmm I could transport some wheezeworts to the asteroid and palce them below some farm.. I have a lot of phosphorite to keep them running although it would be tricky with the radiation. I still can't farm mealwood as there is no dirt. I could try to go with Bristle Blossoms but I woudl have to cool down steam to below 30C. Perhaps I should just rush for oil and produce steel and plastic ASAP - then go with aquatuner and steam turbine.. still - risky and power hungry for a new asteroid.

No Customs and Border Protection means you're free to smuggle as much fauna and flora to the new colony as you'd like.  If you've got access to sulfur on the new colony, some sweetle eggs and grubfruit seeds can have you rolling in grubfruit preserves long enough to get climate control up and running; or indefinitely, if you've got a sulfur geyser and don't mind the middling food quality.

You can just ranch dreckos for food, I bet there is naturally growing pinch peppers and balm lilies... Dreckos can feed on them, you just need to not mess up with gasses... Although it would take some time to start producing enough meet... Alternatively you can carry eggs in a rocket and ranch hatches, breed pacu, sweetles, grubgrubs, slicksters... From plant only grubfruit and water weed will thrive in temperatures above 30... Also strange way to cool environment could be Arbor trees and pips, because those can grow in up to 40 degrees, but spawn always on 20 degrees... They actually can effectively cool surroundings down although in a very long run...

Is it rocky oil asteroid from moonlet cluster? If it is, then you might find enough of temperate climate zones to grow even mealwood and bristle blossom... At least there was in my rocky oil asteroid. Also was going there for dreckos. Bringed a lot of food on the rocket and dug out lot's of muckroot, then running away while still have some food left for travel home.

Second time I brought food to start, but also planted some mealwood and made a light for wild bristle blossom, also find a lot of hatches and slicksters... I could say with few plants and using wild plants and wild critters you can feed 1-2 dupes on that asteroid without problems.

I have managed to survive.

I have started to colonize the asteroid with 2 droids, then I have exploded a rocket next to it and went on my way with securing my dupe.

I have secured early food by dropping Pickled Meal from space.

As for the food production I have build a chamber with wheezeworts to cool it down. This would be a place for my future Bristle farm.

The tricky part was to provide cool water. I have managed to produce some plastic and steal, just enough to build an aquatuner and a steam turbine.  With that in place the asteroid is secure - I have cool water, food production and oxygen. I have also build a hatch farm for food diversity and some coal.

but IT WAS A LOT OF PAIN!  :)

Here is my base - chaotic due to the history of securing the asteroid - work in progress but it is now stable.

And all of this you did in first landing, without going back home?

I am making less organized and more chaotic bases even when spending lot's of time there and going multiple times to make it sustainable... In fact although I was in 5 asteroids, only in two of them there is duplicants living constantly. In others there is half automated bases without sufficient food production if with any...

Great job you did there!

Technically there was no landing at all as I have exploded the rocket :) I had one dupe in there - with high level of athletics to run fact but with little skill points assigned to hale low morale requeirements. Two other dupes were added using the pod.

For me a key to a good base design starts with a park - plan where it will be and make sure that dupes will run through it at least once a cycle. You get +4 morale for free.

This base is probably around 40-50 cycles old but i have over 1200h in the game so I am somewhat skilled in base design ;]
