Long-range signaling: The DD Range Extender

Recommended Posts

With the last beta-patch, Klei gave us interplanetary signaling. In their infinite wisdom, the superior intellects at Klei decided to restrict the range of the Automation Broadcaster to 5 hexes, in order to present us with a conundrum: How can we signal over longer ranges, since 5 hexes is not enough to reach all planetoids? Fear not, the DD Range Extender makes it possible!

All it requires is an absolute minimal rocket and one clueless moron heroic volunteer! The rocket carries one or several pairs of Automation Broadcasters and Automation Receivers linked via automation wires. These pair acts as a signal relay each. Some minimal Oxygen should be loaded so that the dupe does not expire become a hero before the rocket is launched, but no food or other equipment is needed. The relays can even be retargeted after the victim hero has met its destiny!

Multi-stage relay chains are possible as well, although an engine with more reach may be required in that case.

Here is a design for a 2-way relay using a small crew capsule, for example using a CO2 engine. Meep does not yet understand what is about to happen to him.

I feel like there is an opportunity to implement satellites - I imagine a satellite module (like rover or trailblazer) that can be transported by rocket and "deployed" in space on a chosen tile. It would serve as a relay between 1 or multiple wireless signals. There could be small satellites (only 1 signal) and large satellite (multiple signals). They could relay over different ranges.

I'd much prefer something like that over sending duplicants on missions they'll never come back from (dead or alive).

no need to sacrifice a dupe, just use a trailblazer to dump him down to your main planet after launching the rocket

That is an excellent idea. I take it the rocket continues without the dupe?

Rockets can fly and land on autopilot if the dupe is unable to reach the control station they just can`t lift off on their own. They just get a speed debuff if no dupe is present.

And there I thought I _finally_ had found something were killing a dupe was actually useful....

FYI: "DD Range Extender" = "Dead Dupe Range Extender" ;-)

I am hoping somebody at Klei is horrified sufficiently by this idea to give us a better option. I like your "relay satellite" idea.

I thought DD range extender standed for "Dungeons and Dragons Range Extender".

I too approve your "relay satellite" idea. I'm just happy they heard our pleas for Interplanetary Automation. My post months ago wasn't in vain!

Reload wipes out the past ;-)

Tbh with what you've said in the past (quote required), I imagine you have a 3x7 room under each rocket platform where you lock in naughty dupes. Am I close? :wilson_evil:

Naaa. I only occasionally do destructive testing with dupes. The rest is all talk.
