Cryofuel Rocket Balance Issues

Recommended Posts

First off, I don't think radbolt engines need a nerf of any sort. They 'feel' appropriately balanced right now. With that said, cryofuel rockets have no use I can see in the current Spaced Out game.

Now, for my analysis:

Cryofuel is slower than radbolt. I don't have a problem with this in principal, but there needs to be some sort of redeeming virtue to cryofuel.

Height limit: 35 height - 5 for engine - 2 for oxidizer - 10 for 2x fuel (5 ea.) = 18 height left with 18 range, 6 less range than radbolt with only 3 extra available height while also slower. With 1 fuel tank (and only 9 tiles of range), you get 23 available height, which does allow for a niche of 1-shot colonizer, as long as you can actually land it on an asteroid. Still, this only allows you to go from the starting asteroid to one neighbor and back again.

For cryofuel rockets to be worth doing, they need a significant buff. Something like:
A) Significantly faster, like 1.5x-2x radbolt speed.
B) Fuel tanks need to carry 2x-3x current fuel, to allow for more available height for similar range to radbolt.
C) Engine needs to have in-built fuel storage, for similar reasoning to B.
D) Add a destination 13 tiles away from the nearest asteroid, that can only be reached with cryofuel. This destination would essentially have to provide a second source of significant isoresin, to allow for the tree to continue sucking as badly as it does.

I am assuming here that by "cryofuel" you mean liquid hydrogen?

Rocket engines have received a balance change in the current testing branch, you might wanna check the patch notes. Long story short, the radbolt engine range is reduced to 20 (down from 24) and the hydrogen engine range is increased to 16 per fuel tank (up from 9). With two fuel tanks, the hydrogen rocket potentially has a range of 32 hexes, which makes it the best engine in terms of range alone. Also, all engines now use 1 hex worth of fuel to take off, same for landing.

Yes, cryofuel means LH2/LO2.

Oof. Takeoff and landing now eating a tile each, and a nerf to radbolt range? Combined, that's a 25% range nerf! Well, at least radbolt is by far the easiest to set up refueling for on a tiny outer asteroid, and does a lot less cooking of the environment than cryofuel.

...Not to mention the tendency of cryofuel rockets to melt anything and everything not made of tungsten in 2-3 launches, and even tungsten eventually.

The last point I can bring up relates to mining rockets. In no circumstance can you mine more than 20T at a go, and the only two types of materials worth mining are solids and, rarely, liquids (liquid tungsten, looking at you). That means either 1 large solid cargo container (5 height) or 1 small solid cargo container (3 height) and 1 small liquid cargo container (3 height). So, 4 for the drillcone, 5 for the dupe quarters, 5 for the engine, and 5-6 for storage fits nicely on a radbolt engine. What does the cryofuel engine really add for you? Maybe an extra ton or two of solid storage, if a mining cluster is purely solid/liquid and both are desirable and it has enough capacity to fill your storage completely?

Basically, what I'm reading is that I need to set up radbolt refueling on the outer asteroids, not that I need to set up cryofuel production on the home asteroid...or even more absurdly, on outer asteroids.

Cryofuel and I`m instantly back playing ONI ! Mixing new fuel types would be awesome...Sooo thirsty ! :afro:

Er, cryofuel is already in game. It's the liquid hydrogen rocket fuel. He's just chosen to refer to it by the process of making the fuel (getting hydrogen really really cold or cryogenics)

Sorry to disappoint.

I would be glad if more fuel types are added to the game - Some fuels could require heating or cooling them down for the fueling process, which could mean that a rocket fuel type could perhaps implode/explode or just evaporate from rocket tank(s) with a big PPPPFFTTTTT! if it reached a critical temperature

I would love a fuel mixing station too + sparks, fire, combustion and explosions. That would be great ! :beguiled:

Lol watching people use the tree to get isoresin is probably as bad as the lag this game has. Feed the tree for resources. Lol watching people create even more lag in their game in order to procure a minute amount of resource is very disheartening. It’s becoming as toxic as world of Warcraft.
